Cast-
Myself (Melissa)- 26, just finished student teaching. Call me crazy, but I love middle school!! I have been to Disney World 3 times; this will be the first trip without my parents and brother.
Melissa- 26, just finished first year of Law School. Shes near the top of her class and just made law review. How cool is that? She has been to Disney World once as a child.
Background:
Melissa and I met at the beginning our sophomore year at UCLA. We were both members of the campus sprit organization. We were roommates during our senior year and we have been great friends ever since. In fact we used to talk to each other almost daily until a few years ago when I moved to San Diego to pursue teaching, then Melissa moved out of state to go to law school. We are both huge fans of Disney. In fact a group of about 10 of us from college get together at Disneyland about twice a year.
The Trip Materializes:
One day in early May Melissa and I were chatting on the phone commiserating how things were tough for both of us. She was just heading in to finals and interviewing for summer internships. I was student teaching and my students, sensing summer, were getting more unruly by the day. Melissa happened to mention she had a free round trip voucher from Southwest Airlines good anywhere in the Continental US. She was wondering where she should go, as it was only good for a year. She mentioned that she might be interested in going to Orlando. My response was this, By Orlando, do you mean Disney World? Well, duh!
The Trip Takes Shape:
About 2 weeks later Melissa called to let me know that she got one of the summer jobs that she had been interviewing for, and that she would be able to go to Disney World during the middle of August, and gave me a two-week time span in which she would be able to go. We decided to go August 12-19 because that gave Melissa the most time at her summer job, and still got her back in time for fall classes. As an added bonus we found out that Mission: Space will be soft opening on Aug. 15! Yeah!
By this time we had found out about the Fairytale Package. What good luck we were having with this trip!!! We decided that a moderate resort would be a good compromise between a vacation splurge and sensible budgeting. After extensive research I had decided that Port Orleans-Riverside was my resort of choice, while Melissa didn't favor any one over the others. Port Orleans Riverside just really spoke to me. The mansions, the river, the landscaping, it all looked fabulous. The day the Fairy Tale Package was released to the general public Melissa called to make our reservation. She called me later on that evening to tell me that Port Orleans Riverside was sold out, so she booked Caribbean Beach Resort instead. The beach? I hate the beach! I live 15 minutes from the beach and I never go. All my Southern Belle fantasies went right out the window. I tried to be stoic, but I was pretty disappointed. Melissa said she didnt mind if I called back to try and switch our reservation, so after a month of calling WDW Travel every day I was finally able to switch resorts. My Scarlet OHara dreams live on!
Melissa has been really cool about letting me hijack the planning for this trip. It has really been a Godsend for me while I have nothing to do during summer vacation. One of the things that she really wanted to do was Islands of Adventure. Since Im not a huge fan of roller coasters, I decided to opt out of that day. Weve traveled together before and usually split up for one day. I will spend that day touring all of the resorts on the property. I have future trips to plan! Here are some of the other things that we have planned that I am especially looking forward to:
E-Ride night at the Magic Kingdom
Dinner at the Flying Fish Café
Tea at the Grand Floridian
Riding Mission: Space for the first time
As I write this we leave in 10 days. I can hardly contain my excitement! Look at how much I have written and we havent even left yet! Ill be writing an even more ridiculously detailed report upon our return. Thanks for reading!
