I really like this movie but I don't really know why. I just watched it again today. I however have a question, I have watched the movie a million times but I am still never sure if the daughter Susan figures out who JOe Black is at the end. When JB and Anthony Hopkins go over the bridge then "Joe" comes back to Susan, was it just that death possesed his body? If that is the case then to whom does "Joe's" body really belong? At the end Susan says she wishes Joe could have met her father but did the rest of the people at the party find AH dead OR does he just disappear?
See I WISH they had more information at the end. DRIVES ME CRAZY!

I hate myself when I watch movies where I need to suspend disbelief and then I have a million question that cannot be answered with logical answers.

I like it too and watched it a few times recently.:rolleyes1

Here is my thing....Why wasn't Susan screaming "where did my dad go?" since they were super close.

As far as "Death" possessing his body, not sure about that. I was assuming that "Joe" was a "Reaper" which is a servant of "Death".

I think "Death" released "Joe" from his "Reaper duties" to become mortal. Now I am going to have to Wiki this after saying all of this...:rotfl:

OK here is the Wiki of the ending. Well I was OFF, lol. I forgot the beginning.

Bill devotes his remaining hours of life to his daughters Allison and Susan at his birthday party. Joe says his last goodbye to Susan, who senses something of the truth behind his words but is unable or unwilling to vocalize this realization. A fireworks show in the distance, Joe escorts Bill away while Susan watches. She is astonished when Joe reappears. The young man, unaware of what events have transpired from the time of his death until his return, isn't even aware how he got here. A mystified but pleased Susan asks him, "What do we do now?" He replies, "It will come to us."

I agree with some of it but the REaper part. See if he were a reaper why would death stop all over the world while he is with Bill? Also the movie's original title when it was first made was "Death Takes a Holiday". What you say makes sense but I found the end so confusing and I always forget that Joe comes back to Susan in the end. Was this an alternate ending? I do not remember it from the first time I saw it. I thought they just walked off in the distance and then that was it leaving Susan with tears in her eyes.

Let me just say, Brad looked pretty darn good in that movie. I am surprised more woman weren't "dying" just to be with him. LOL

fyi~ i do, because it's a great example between man knowledge
& our creator who set the whole system up including the "rules"
to live by....

the movie has the similar problems to vampire movies, in the
there are zero possibilities for any reality.....blood is a medium
that life use as a transportation system. death is not a "thing"
that one can own or hold but processing situation that stop
life from living. death happens after the act of dying....& it
can be so confusing ;as this processing can take years or
as fast as blinking one's eyes. blood is not a food source.

lack of movement is what we use to determine the state of
being dead. i think this has merit in stressing our needs for
adl's & keeping active. this goes toward crediting the medical
field-- via anything you do for another that they can do
for themselves--is actual harming them.

what i think is most impressive , is learning how all these systems
work together toward sustaining our "daily bread" while giving
us the potential for discovering happiness....if only we respect
the reality that it took to created them. especially the thinking
that put it all into action.

to me, the suggestion that death was a man in no ways gave
him feelings. i also believe that death is addressed in the "good
book" as a redirecting tool & a reminder that the ways we
treat others has a direct bearing on our well being--per
be gate , be gate -----reference to passing on to generations,
& the memories we leave behind with loved ones.

( a tab off the topic.....but my career in mental health,
has taught me ...how emotional painful loneliness can be. but
it due to the processing of aging where the lesson is
taught -- one becomes whatever they practice. so he best way
to prevent regrets-do the things today, you like to remember
tomorrow. and don't forget to share with ones you spend
your with. )

now if i was doing this movie, i would have added an unexpected
guest..."life".

DW and I did not like this movie.

Hey, you asked :goodvibes

I love the movie. I think Susan realizes who Joe was at the end.

I wonder if there is a director's cut? Usually when there is the director fills in teh background ...then again I think I saw the director's cut and there was no further info about Susan and Joe. I wish there was some sort of sequal. Did they marry? Does he have family? HOw did he come to exist? Was he dead and DEATH just used his body?

See I could go on and on with stuff like this. LOL!

Sorry to disagree with you on this, but I totally did NOT get this movie, I really did not like it at all. It just kind of never did anything or went anywhere for me.I was left saying, is this it? :confused3

oh, oh , o~h.....sorry, for taking so long in following up
to answer your ?. ( i work for a living & work has been
extra busy lately. )

hope my beginning wasn't too confusing...because to respond
best , i wanted to share what the movie meant too me. and
to do that , i needed to add the "directions" i am using....
mostly the things i have discover from my own life journals.

my feelings not toward this movie...but all movies.....i lose
interest quickly when they are suggesting a "fantasy"
that has no chance in "reality".

to me, that define exactly ..why i get excited with the disney
classics movies...how much feelings they jammed into
the story that human beings are feeling.

death- being so negative due to the loss vs gain...makes it
even tougher, so i felt right away they///or anyone for that
matter,...must "build" some connections to reality, esp.
to life creator. just to add...what i am getting @....i don't
i ever seen better way to describe the value of love ,&
the pain of losing it..then " the sword in the stone--the
squirrel epsiode..every single line , every word...esp.
"merlin's observation...made the point- that the most
important goal in life, is finding someone special to
share your time with.

*so based on my feelings, "is why" this movie didn't work
for me.

however, being a part of the medical field for more years
i care to confess .. & happenstances , would add the
realities that i have been privileged too....for your consideration,

death- is something we all must do by our self ...just like
being born except the closer. ( i am amazed of this
fact because if things were different....then it wouldn't
necessary have this "condition" so i think there is a reason
why & it is importany beyond our understanding. )

part of my career ...was 8 years..in doing intensive care.
while preserving /protecting life, also witnessed there are
things worst than dying.

no person lives a long life. 100 years...isn't long. we all
live life or we exist ...some longer/shorter than others.

i think living well is simply not wasting our time. & if
we developed our maturity through education,
appreciation, plus propensity....so much we can gain.
that learning all of this....& 2 the end of every day,
life is always worth living.

"take nothing with us". i don't think that is 100% accurate.
but i do think it is a good thing to recognize because
"what" we leave behind....is more important to us
after we passed.

speaking of (head) banger , have you ever look in the merriam-
webster dictionary & how many references to "life"'s
matters... that used a "death" word toward a state of being?
( dead beat, dead end, dead heat, dead pan, deadly
sin....one could make a story by adding actual
experiences)

yes, i think all the different responses here are all correct because
it covers a range as well as a single point....

one thing i observed, no person regardless how close by
illness or misfortune, ever accept death- is going to
happen to them. to me, that makes a lot of sense , because
life is so precious & make up our greatest value.
therefore, it offer "up" the directions we should best follow-
to spend our time wisely. while there are choices
we can make, those spending time in anger,
jealously, harming others.....is restricted by losing "time"
in happiness & joy.

death, have conditions. some are very hard to figure
out ....my parent shave passed over 30 years ago...
yet they had 10 kids , that are part of their bodies,
still living. my daughter has her grandmother beautiful
red hair even though my wife 's is snow white black.
she never met her. but one day when she was 3, there
she was, acting just like her. it created a happy memory
for me... in reminding how important my mother was
in my life. i always heard growing up, nobody loves
you more than your mother--& this reminded me
why.

i don't remember many dreams , but i did one from the
80's....where we went to the cemetery to pay respect
to my father....but he was walking up to us....&
i told him, "you can't being do this", but he said "why
not"..that woke me up. give me the jimmy's &
still don't have a clue why i dream that,....except maybe
"i " don't know a lot about it.

.....i also heard that in a life's time....a person come very close
to death several times. being in the health field, has provided
many examples of this being true. one thing that has been
interesting too me in health care, are human dynamics
designed to preserve & "protect " life...we have numerous
back~up systems. this fact is amazing too me.

sports greatest value too me, is getting people to work together
based on a common ground. ever noticed how many college
football stories are "encounters" with fans facing major life
issues & their favorite team/star? any activity that produces
"hope" has value- many values. * during my career, can't
tell how many times where "hope" from a supportive family
made the difference.....i may practice in the medicine field, but
faith does the healing. just saying....what i experienced the last
30+ years.

on the flipped side.....i believe the biggest/#1 "cause" of
death , is stupidity. or the more specific de~tail ruling,
"not respecting the dangers/risks to life." .....all one needs
to do..is watch tv shows....about the world dumbest &
so forth. is the "attention" worth the risks/pain /agony?

that's the selling point about maturity...those against learning,
don't live long, successful life.

:flower3: , so sorry for presenting so many strong feelings.
but the topic has held my interest for years... in hoping to
provide better health care. but the movie, not so much.
