Mediterranean Excursions

I just tried to book my excursions at 75 days out and the only ones I noticed (the ones I wanted) that were sold out were Rome: Jumping back to eternal rome (capacity is 150 or close) and La Spezia: Florence and Pisa.
The La Spezia one really got me cause it's the only excursion that goes to both.
Also, for all you first timers...don't hope to get ANY palo reservations. They had none available, not dinner, brunch or tea. If you can try to hook up with a suite or castaway person and have them make a group one to include you. Thats what I did, not knowing that I wouldn't be able to get an additional date.
Here is a copy of the email I sent to DCL. I was one of many "first timers" who sent in complaints.
I called this morning regarding the fact that the excursions that I wanted were not coming up online at 12:01am as I hit the 75 day mark for my cruise this summer. The CM and Supervisor clearly explained to me that the reason for this was that those excursions were sold out. I couldn't believe that the minute I was able to book excursions they were already sold out. Of course, they explained that there were people ahead of me, suite holders and castaway, which I knew had the ability to reserve. WHY would DCL not save spaces for new cruisers to book excursions? This really puts a bad taste for people who have never cruised you lines before. Additionally, the kind CM and Supervisor also let me know that there were NO WAITLIST capabilities AND if I wanted to check the website to see if space opened on the excursions that I wanted, then I would have to cancel my BACK UP's running the risk that I would then be excursionless for the trip. I am floored by this practice at disney. I have been on several other cruise lines and have never had these problems. I do understand that excursions book up, but the fact that you can't WAITLIST or even call on the phone to check before you give away your space on another excursion is UNACCEPTABLE. Additionally, if that excursion is open as of cruise time you would PENALIZE your guests and make them pay for both. I thought your lines were trying to sell that it's not about the kids only. It certainly seems that you aren't trying to please the adults either. Again, the CM and supervisor I spoke with were very nice and seemed sincerely apologetic, but were little help as DCL does not offer the little services that would put your customer service on par with other cruise lines.
Sincerely,
Stephanie

I think DCL is going to have problems with a lot of cancellations of trips. People are not going to want to spend the money to find out that the tours that Disney advertised are not available the first day that they should be. I don't know the percentage of first time DCL passengers vs CC members, but this is not right. They better start making some adjustments soon, or they will have not only some cancelations, but some real bad PR from this, I think.

I'm disappointed as well too. I didn't get VIP to PISA but I figured out they only had like under 30 spots available. Anyways, one of the problems and my cousin TA warned me that Disney doesn't have a relationship with vendors in the Med. so, until the relationship is established it is probably harder to demand tour vendors. She said that is one of the pitfalls of using a special itinery like that. I cruised to be on Disney because of my kids. So I'm still happy with my choice. If more cancel that would be great for us because less people on the boat. But I doubt many would cancel at this if they already made their airplane reservations.

Hard to cancel when final payment is due at 90 days, but the only people who could book before that due date are those in the suites.

Hi Everyone

I hope that you all enjoy your Disney cruises. I have never taken a Disney cruise (hoping to in '08) but I have visited several of these cities recently. My two cents

Barcelona - DO NOT do a guided tour of Barcelona. The city is easy to get around (the harbor is very centrally located) with an excellent and easy to use metro system and inexpensive cabs if one is travelling outside of the city center. Also, the food is excellent, the beaches are beautiful and amazingly clean, everyone speaks English and the shopping is out of this world. My favorite city in Europe. My first impression of the city is that is very similar to Paris, except with better food, less attitude and beaches. Hit the beaches, Las Ramblas (the main street containing street performers, shopping, sidewalk cafes and great people watching), and the Barri Gothic. All of these are within a mile of each other and easily walkable. las Ramblas starts at the Harbor and forms the eastern border of the Barri Gothic. From the Harbor it is only a few minutes walk to the beach at Barcelonetta.

Rome - DO take a guided tour of Rome. The city is not particularly close to the Ocean so just getting into the center city on ones own will be a challenge. The public transportation system is atrocious. In particular the metro is not very conveinent (it does not go to the Vatican) and not very safe, (both from pickpockets and at least one serious accident with deaths). The city center of Rome can also be quite confusing which can make it challenging to find the sights. The highlight of Rome is the Vatican and a guided tour will certainly help there. In the summer the line for individuals to get into the Vatican museum can be more then two hours long. However, guided tours have a seperate line. A tour will likely help you to hit the highlights (Forum and Coleseum, Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, the Vatican including St. Peters, the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel.) Do not expect to see everything in Rome in a day. Especially everything in the Vatican museum. There are literally miles of corridors in the museum.

Florence - Florence is not very close to the ocean (think inland). I am not sure if a cruise is a good way to try to see the city. If your tour does not include time in the Uffuzi Gallery and a chance to see the David I would not spend the money. Save Florence for another trip.

Whatever you do do not attempt to drive in Italy unless you are used to driving in a major metropolitan area (like London, Paris or New York) and are very confident of your skills. There are essentially no signs, and all of your fellow drivers are insane. Driving in Spain is quite easy with reasonably drivers, good signage and a new and modern highway system.

I have not visited the other cities.

Just my two cents. Everyone have fun (and go heavy on the sunblock and water)

Just wanted to say thank you for the tips !;)

So more info...I contacted Fat Tire bike tours in Barcelona to ask about kids and they said that they DO have kids bikes and the price for 12 and under is 15 euros and they recommend the day trips for kids as the night ones can get "rowdy" as they put it. They are 4 hours and the night one starts at 7pm so it can get late for some kids too. Just an FYI for all of you who might be interested. Thanks to whomever originally posted the bike tour info, my dd and I are excited about this "on our own" trip.

I hadn't seen it mentioned but I may have missed it. Has any one recieved and watched the med DVD? we got ours in the mail yesterday (because of mail forwarding from our old house) but couldn't watch it as I wanted to wait for my dh to be at home.

Anyone else get it? what is it about? anything new mentioned?

There's a Med DVD????

Aww....we probably won't get it on the repos. Our Med packets only had 2 pages on shore excursions and those 2 pages just told us to bring comfortable shoes and sunscreen.

What is the website for the bike company? Thanks!

yeah it was originally sent to ta it seems and then forwarded on to me. It didn't have much info (other than how to prodonouce some of the ports :P ) but we did enjoy the pics of the sites ... they had a portion just for kids hosted by dj someome-with-a-british-accent.... some what cute.... and then they had a don't forget before you go section (make sure your passport is good for 6 month after you are spposed to return form the cruise, make a copy of your passport etc...)

Over all nothing you wouldn't know if you are an avid disser, but something to get you excited for your cruise.

They missed us out presumed we know about it being Europeans?

Could MED cruisers who start to book there shore trips soon, please post their experiance and availability.

I was able to book at 90 days. I woke up at 3:00 AM EST, but they still did not work out the daylight savings time issue. I went back to bed and woke up at 5:30 AM (90 minutes after booking opened). Everything was still available. Many days and times for Palo brunch, dinner, and tea. I only booked dinner & brunch though. The real test will be next week when I try to book the same excursions for my father. He is a first timer so can book at 75 days.

Andrew on a letter I got from DCL (end of last year) it said that 5 months out we'd receive a complete set of brochures and at 3 months to watch for more med magic to sail your way.

Perhaps we've not got the DVD because it comes @ the 3 month mark;)

Here's hoping anyhow.

I think i posted before but we books at 75 days for the 6/6 cruise and we had problems (the dightlight savings thing) getting on at night:surfweb: . we were also moving that weekend and by the time we woke up our phone and DSL were disconnected. so my husband was able to get on at work around 9am central time. we were able to book all of our excursions, but the only palo was avalable when we wouldn't be on the ship. about 5 days later i decided to add on a spa treatment (the exotic rasul?) and had no problem doing that for our day at sardina.

the excursions we booked were (in order of how we booked too):
the highlights of rome and vatican:banana:
the almalfi coast drive and ruins of pompeii
the aix in provence
the evening casino

We knew we wouldn't be able to get any of the VIP trips as those didn't have many spaces to begin with, but we were very happy to get all of our first choices.

I am a bit disappointed that we don't have a palo dinner booked, but we'll try again on departure and if we don't get it this cruise wasn't about that anyway.
