Medication Question

My son is starting Growth hormones. Going to disney will be fine, we are arriving at night so we can put them in the fridge when we arrive. My question is check out time. We have to check out of the room by 11. Is there a place to store the medication until our flight. We have a 8 p.m. flight. Thanks Michelle

You should be able to store them with Bell Services at the resort.
You might want to look into something like people store insulin vials in:
Frio Wallet

Check with your pharmacy to see just how cool the medication needs to be kept and how long it can be at a cool, but less than refrigerator temperature.

You could also use a small insulated container with ice - make sure the ice/water is contained in a plastic bag and that the vial is protected from freezing.

Is he on the regular Hgh or the newer IGF insulin factor ones? I ask because my son just started the newer IGF injections in combination with his Hgh. the new injections cause hypoglycemia and when I was getting my training for that they told me the Hgh can too (well that explains ALOT!). So if you are not aware that hypoglycemia episodes may occur, please watch your son, especially in the heat. Even if it is the Hgh.

Are you staying on-site? I know when we were getting some groceries delivered to our hotel, we were told that Disney Bell Services would hold them for our arrival and would refridgerate any perishables if they were packed separately and marked. I imagine they can hold your meds in a fridge between checkout and leaving as well.

Are you planning on staying at the resort after you check out, or are you going to a park? If you are going to a park, do you need to go back to the resort for your luggage?

If you don't need to return to the resort you could have the medications stored in the fridge in the first aid station at the park!

We are staying for our first time at our timeshare. When we check out we will not be going back to the resort. I will if I have to store the medication. With the supplies they sent me i received a freezer back and bag. It stays cold for hours but I am not sure where to freeze it when we go home since our room is a studio not sure the fridge has a freezer.

From your signature, it is Bay Lake Towers?
I am not positive, but the refrigerators in the Disney Vacation Club studios have a single door and may have a small freezer compartment on top of the refrigerator section. Those types of freezer compartments typically can't keep ice cream frozen solid, so may not be able to freeze your ice pack for your trip back home.

Looking up the storage requirements for Human Growth hormone, what I found said the ready to use product must be kept at refrigerator temperature (36 to 46 degrees F). The product your child is using may be different, but should have some similar information on line.

The Frio wallet I posted about won't get that cold; it is meant for keeping things cool - more like 60 to 70 degrees F for a minimum of 45 hours. SO, that's one option you won't have to check out.

Here are some suggestions:

- I do know people have frozen ice packs by putting them into a cooler full of ice water. You could do that the night before you leave and change the ice in the morning before you check out. That may not be enough to stay cool all the way from 11 am until you leave at 8pm, but once you pass security at the airport, you can get some ice from one of the restaurants at the airport.
Be sure to bring along some plastic bags to put the ice in to keep it/water from coming into contact with the medication.

- If you are going to a park, you could take the medication to First Aid to store, as Schmeck suggested. They should also be able to freeze your ice pack for you also. I would personally choose First Aid; since First Aid is staffed by Nurses, they would have better awareness of the importance of keeping medication stored correctly.

- If you want to leave the medication at the resort, they should be able to hold it for you in Bell Services (they do hold food that people order that arrives before check in). You can call WDW Resort Special Reservations at (407) 939-7807 to verify this.

I would suggest that you take a good cooler (I am sure you will for the travel portion of the trip anyway). You should have some of those freezer paks they send. My pharmacy tells me it keeps the medication cold (to their standards) for 24 hours; this allows for their summer shipping times and it gets hot here. Got some coming tomorrow and the packs will be thawed but the med's will be cool and they say they are ok. If the resort does not have a freezer that you can freeze your paks in before you leave, then take some ziplocs for ice. You'll need the cooler for travel, to store it that last day if they don't have a fridge and you'll have to use ice if you have no way to freeze your freezer paks. Just refill your ice before you leave.
