my grandfather needs to put his insulin and medicane in a refrigerator but he is staying at All Star Sports and is suppose to pay extra for it, but because his insulin and medicane NEEDS refridgeration does the resort give him the refridgerator free of cost??

hi i was told by my travel agent that if its a medical necessity than yes it should be free, we are going sept 11-18 and my sons gfriend needs one and when i booked it i was unaware that she needed one for medical needs and my agent told me that all i had to do was show some documentation at check in and it shouldn't cost extra. hope this was a help and enjoy yourself. :cool1:   :woohoo: :yay:

what you are promised is a small refrigerated unit, smaller than the dorm sized fridges you can rent.

what you get may be larger, but expect only something large enough for what you need for medicinal reasons.

My dad got one for his insulin for free at POP, so I am sure the same applies at the All-Stars. He got a dorm size fridge.

My TA requested fridge for us (DS is type 1) for our trip this August. It was not a problem and we were not instructed to present doctor's note, rx or anything special to get at n/c. If they ask I hope a vial of insulin is good enough- lol.

What i really whant to know is how often do people get the small "just big enough for medicine" refridgerators? I really hope we get the"dorm" size i have other stuff I would like to keep cold. I guess a styrofoam cooler is pretty cheap. To be safe I think I'll get one at our grocery stop.

How many of you got a "medicine- size" fridge at POP??

I would send a fax or email before you go requesting one. Then take evidence of his condition, although I doubt WDW will ask its better to have a doctors letter or something similar. My DH in his own wheelchair got asked for written DLP (for his GAC) and we hadn't taken any.:guilty:
Still they sorted it out :goodvibes .
As far as I know all the fridges are the bigger ones so you can store drinks with the medicine. Something I found strange was DH's Tramadol melt in the Florida heat.

I have twice gotten a frig for insulin at POP. My only problem was that although it was mentioned on the reservation and again at checkin, I still had to call housekeeping both times. The first visit it took 2 phone calls. But I was not charged for it.

:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Ask at check in and also mention it when you check in. It should not be a problem at all because it is a fairly common situation. If you want to call, you can try WDW Special Reservations Line: (407) 939-7807 - option 1
They are the department that deals with Special Needs. I'm not sure if they would handle refrigerator requests if you have no other needs, but they will be a place to start.

Some people have gotten a dorm size frig. Some have gotten a small refrigerator about the size of a shoe box. It all depends on how much demand there is and how many refrigerators they have at the time you check in.
There should be no charge for storage for medication; they may want to look at the medication bottles, but do not need anything else. Do check the charges when you check out in case a mistake is made and you end up with a daily charge for it.

You may want to check with the Pharmacy for his specific medications. Most insulins don't need refrigeration for the bottle in use; refrigeration is required for longer term storage (again, his individual insulin may be different, but most can be stored at room temperature for the bottle that is being used). Even with a refrigerator, it's nice to know how important temperature regulation is while traveling.

When we went in 2003, our then-toddler could only drink soy milk and I knew we wouldn't be able to find that on-site. When I made the reservation, I told the CM that we'd need a fridge for that, and he gave us a medical fridge for no charge. (This was at CSR before they added refrigerators to all the moderate resort rooms.) It was a basic, square dorm refrigerator, but it had plenty of room for our son's milk and some bottles of water for us. We didn't have to show any documentation when we checked in, and by the time we got from the front desk to our room, mousekeeping had already installed it.

This past year when we've stayed at a value resort, the fridge we were given for medical reasons ( tube feeding formula) was very tiny. We could only fit a few cans in there but it worked out alright. I was told they are replacing the dorm size refrigerators with the tiny ones for people who request one for meds. I guess this cuts down on abuse of people getting a free one when it's not for a medical need. There's be no way to store a family's water bottles, etc. in this tiny fridge as there was very minimal storage. ---Kathy

I'll keep my fingers crossed that we get a larger fridge- but if we don't oh well. I can't complain when it is free!! I prefer to keep insulin cold even though it is stable at room temp for 28 days. My son wears a pump and his insulin will be at 90+ degrees all day- I just feel better knowing his insulin is stored at optimum conditions. Styrofoam cooler for us I guess!!
thanks for all your help.

We were originally booked for Pop this summer. I was told that the only free refrig for my insulin wd be one of the very small plug-in things that only holds a couple of bottles of meds. When I explained that I also needed to be able to refreeze ice packs to carry my insulin around during the day the response was that I wd have to pay for a refrig. So don't plan on getting a dorm size refrig.

Here's a suggestion for getting the ice packs cold.
Some people have posted they brought a collapsable cooler along in their luggage. We have one we bought at Sam's Club that folds into a flat package about 10 inches wide by 24 inches wide by about 2 inches deep. It says on it that it will keep frozen things froze for up to 5 hours. We have used ours on car trips that were longer than that and the stuff was still frozen solid after a 6 hour car trip. If you fill it with ice (free!) morning and evening, it will at least keep your ice packs cold.
You would not probably want to leave the insulin in First Aid, but there is one in each park and they will store medications and medical supplies. They might be willing to store an extra ice pack for you.

My DS is dairy allergic, so I always request one (swan, dolphin, disney before they put them in all rooms) for soy milk. I have never been charged OR asked for any documentation! The swan and dolphin usually charge for them, but I would just put it on our ressie, then call down once in the room for it. No questions asked. I wouldn't worry about documentation or anything.

When I stayed at disney, my DD needed her medicine refig. and I called up WDW and they provided me one free of charge in the room. I attached it to my reservation 2 days prior to leaving & when I arrived I reminded them & it was in my room when I got in.
