I've seen ads for a long time where you can complete a send away for course and become a medical transcriptionist and work from home.
I'm smart enough to realize that those courses and the ones at the Career colleges are probably not very marketable in the real world. However, I have bene checking into the courses through my local community college. The offer a certification program that takes about 3 semesters. What I was wondering if there is anyone else on here that does medical transciption from hoem and if it is fairly easy to find those jobs.

Look for answers on wahm.com, workplacelikehome.com, transcriptionessentials.com.

No personal experience, but I worked with a young lady (early 20s who just had her first child) who completed a local community college medical transcripton course and was planning to change gears.

The main thing she encountered was everyone wanted experience, in addition to certification. After she and her DH paid off the expenses of their DS's birth, she managed to get an internship at a doctor's office. Very low pay--some internships are unpaid--but it allowed her to get her foot in the door.

I work as an MT from home. Most companies do require 2 years experience but if you go to certain schools they consider those schools as your 2 year experience. I went to M-Tec which is a course you take it home. I graduated in about 14 months and it cost close to $5,000. That may sound pricey but I was offered a job less than 8 hours after I graduated and I have been steadily employed for the past 4 years. Pay varies based mainly on how fast you produce... I usually make anywhere from $10 to $20 an hour. Not a ton but when I factor in all the money I have saved working from home and not having to pay somebody to take care of the kids it is so worth it.

Before signing up for any course do a whole lot of research. Make sure any program is Association of Healthcare Documentation-certified, as M-Tec, Career Step, and Andrews are (not just that the school is an institutional member of AHDI). The field is changing over time as hospitals are changing over to the electronic medical record. Some are converting to the use of voice recognition technology for reports and are using more editors than transcriptionists. Some hospitals and doctors' offices are outsourcing all transcription to online services rather than hiring their own transcriptionists. If you receive good training, do very, very well in your studies, and learn to use all the tools such as a text expander to the fullest extent, you should be able to succeed.

Transcription is not for everyone. It requires superior spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proofreading and editing skills as well as medical vocabulary. The most complete transcription site on the web is Transcription Essentials. There are other sites dedicated solely to medical transcription.

In 2003, I completed a one year Certification course in Med Trans from a Community College. Looked for employment for a year with no luck. Everyone wanted 2 years expierence minimum and that was to work in office, the work at home jobs required much more than that! I acutally gave up and went back to college to become a RN. I graduated last year as a RN. I strongly recommend becoming a nurse over transcriptionist! Much better odds of finding work!!! Best of luck to you!

It is hard to find the stay-at-home jobs as a transcriptionist. They are out there, but hard to find.
Like one other poster said, technology is changing. The need for transciptionist is going down.

In addition to medical transcription which requires specific training courses, there are independent contractor jobs in legal transcription, for which legal office experience may be required, and general transcription, which can involve any topic. More and more transcription is being performed by services rather than inhouse. Check out transcriptionessentials.com to learn more.
