Medical "issues" while at WDW?

Has anyone ever had to go to a walk-in clinic or use doctor's services while at Disney.

As a Canadian did you need anything - if so what?

What about filling a prescription while in the US?

Poor DD is sick, bad ear infection and cold so DH and I are worried since we leave in 3 days. Started her antibiotic today, but we'll need it for 2 days while we're there. To make things worse my throat is a little sore today, ugh it never fails!

There is a walk-in clinic just up from the Crossroads. Quite simple to use. Walk in, register, wait about an hour, get checked, pay with credit card, get your prescription at the onsite pharmacy and be on your way. The toughest part is dealing with OHIP or your private insurer after getting home.
Our local doctor told us once that not much can get by your children once they are on an antibiotic, so things should be fine for you.

Take the prescription paper with you just in case you are questioned at the border about the antibiotics you're carrying.

If you have travel insurance medical, they might cover you for treatment there. Check before you go. If you don't have travel insurance medical, or if they are only secondary insurance, you will need to apply for reimbursement from your provincial plan. They will usually only cover a part of the cost. Get paperwork in triplicate from the clinic or doctor where you get treatment... it's bureaucracy gone wild to get the money back in my experience.

All you need is money and any clinic or hospital will be happy to see you.

If you have out of country health insurance find out what their policy is prior to leaving Canada.

I have gone to a walk-in clinc, and a hospital emergency room. In both instances, my out of country health insurance paid the full amount, without question.

With regard to prescriptions, you cannot refill prescriptions that were originally filled in Canada (your prescription is only valid in the province in which it is written). However, any prescription written in Florida, can be filled at any Florida drug store. In my case, my health plan covered the cost of the prescription, just like they would have in Canada.

My son got a huge sty in his eye while there last year. It looked like he got punched in the eye and it was very swollen. I went to the front desk at WL and they called the clinic and someone from there picked us up and drove us back. They also took us over to get a prescription at Walgreens.

We have travel medical from TD bank for the whole family that we pay for the year so we can use it everytime we go over the border. All we had to do is call the toll free number before we got treatment. They ask you question or you just get the staff at the clinic to give you the info for them at I think they fax. It would have cost $160.00 just for them to look at him but with our insurance it cost nothing I think the prescription was paid for too.

We had the clinics on call doctor come to our room at the BCV. It was $200 but well worth it not to have to wait at a walk in clinic.

When I came home I submitted it to OHIP who paid $50 and then my DH's plan which reimbursed all the rest.

As people have already mentioned, check your policy and if you have questions, call somebody about your policy. They *may* not cover medical expenses if you're heading down there with a pre-existing condition. Now, they may not be able to prove you've got a sore throat or the sniffles before you leave but the prescription for your daughter is a dead give away that she had a pre-existing condition.

Just check to be sure. Maybe it's different for kids. For adults, especially seniors, if you change a prescription within something like 3 months, the out of country insurance doesn't cover medical expenses in the States.

When my son was eighteen months old, he had some kind of tummy toubles so we took him to Centra Care and it was amazing. They came to pick us up with their van at no charge. Once at the clinic all my husband had to do was present his insurance policy number and that was it. We didn't have to pay anything out of pocket. When the check up was all over they drove us back to the resort.

This Centra Care was near Downtown Disney on 535, I believe.

Just before we left on our trip my husband also had a sore throat coming on. He went to our local dr and told him we were going to the states. He wrote him a prescription for antibiotics for the whole time we were away, he also wrote me a prescription to fill just to have with us incase I got sick too. Maybe speak to your dr and he can set you up with something before you go just to have incase your throat gets worse.
