Hello!

I am researching 3rd party medical coverage. I do have coverage on my platinum visa.... But worried this may be limited. I have looked at BCAA and through my insurance broker.

Has anyone had to use 3rd party medical while on the US? Do you purchase or just use what is offered through some credit cards?

Thanks!!

Through our retiree's association we have an inexpensive rate for annual travel insurance that coordinates benefits with the out of country medical insurance bundled into our retiree's medical insurance. Both plans are administered by the same group. I realize our situation may not apply to many, but after a lot of research, the rates could not be beat. With our current insurance we pay less now than we used to for one trip with coverage through RBC. A lot of people on the Dis like RBC and President's Choice travel insurance.

this is who I use they are great and very reasonable prices and great coverage.

I get an annual plan from http://www.medipac.com to cover all my out-of-country trips for the year. Their core business is insurance for Snowbirds and higher-risk clients, but I've been using them since I was in my early 20s.

I purchase our travel medical coverage through RBC travel insurance. I find it is reasonably priced and the coverage comprehensive. I have had to use it in the past during trips down south. We were having a hard time finding a open medical clinic one time we had to use it and they have a 24/7 assistance line and gave us a phone number and address of a children's hospital. We did not have to pay any of the medical bills at all out of pocket during the trips. Just handed over the card and they billed RBC directly.

We've had to use my husbands coverage twice. Once for dd and strep throat. Next trip was for ds and an infection in his appendix. Ds's condition required ambulances (2), CT scans, meds, and a hospital stay. Some was covered by our OHIP, but the majority was covered by my husbands supplemental work policy. We got the bills but did not pay a cent. It would have been more than $26,000.

So that is my cautionary tale. I will never ever travel without medical. When husband went back to school, we no longer had his excellent work policy and we started purchasing the insurance from RBC. What I like about their insurance is you can cover yourself for the year, so you have coverage on multiple trips or even if we cross over to shop for the day.:)
