Medical Emergency

We have been DVC members for 13 years. We have a situation that I never thought would apply to us.

We have a week at BWV scheduled next month on points. My wife needs surgery and we may have to cancel. Our use year is December. I am afraid we will loose these points since it is too close to bank them.

I thought I heard somewhere of an unwritten rule, that 1 time based upon a medical emergency that these point might be treated different.

Has anyone had a medical emergency that caused a late cancelation? What was your experience?

I'm sorry that it looks like you will be needing to cancel the vacation. I think you should call MS and see what they say your options are. Since you are so close to travel time, (are you less than 31 days out?) I don't know if they would allow you the one time late banking exception or not.

If you are stuck with the reservation, you very likely could rent the reservation as it stands on the rent/trade board. Read the sticky over there regarding posting reservations for rent, as there are restrictions. But no doubt, for a BW F&W ressie, you should be able to find a taker.

Hope you wife recovers quickly.

I would call MS. They may allow you the "super-secret, once in a lifetime" banking deadline exception and bank the points for you.

Not a DVC but a DCL using points.
Adult DD was scheduled to go and stay in our room. The cruise was to happen the week after the 1st Iraq war started, her BiL was KIA, and she had to cancel as the funeral happened the day before sailing. Contacted MS and DCL and after we provided proof, they refunded the points.

I was in a similar "never happen to me" situation this past summer with a reservation. Through the Rent/Trade board, I was able to get fair value for my reservation, and make somebody's vacation much better with an "upgrade" to DVC for their week.

Sorry you have to cancel, but if they've won't allow the "double secret probation" banking, consider using the DIS Rent/Trade option.

My DH got an emergency apendix and galbladder removal. It was cancelled 3 days out. I told MS, could have sent proof.. they put my points in holding. .. per the contract they followed the law and gave no favors.


I was able to cancel out dolphin excursion, and a 1/2 dozen dinners planned. all i think in the cancellation policy of 48 hours.


Delta however did allow me to use the full value of my flights any time within 12 months.. We ending up taking a 3 day to to BOS instead. 11.8 months later.. just to use the flights.

DH had emergency surgery 2 weeks before one of our trips. Surgeon cleared him to go. Couldn't think of a happier place to recover. We just took it easy on that trip.

Really sorry about your situation. Please tell your wife that folks on the disboards are wishing her well, and sending good thoughts that her surgery and recovery go as easily as possible.

I know it's not ideal, but you are in a good position to rent your points if you are willing to do that. A confirmed reservation at BW during the Food and Wine Festival should go quickly!

These are the type of reasons why I strongly suggest that one build in a margin of safety everywhere possible including cost saving interpretations, RCI exchanges, cash exchanges (DCL, DC, ABD, CC), choosing UY, etc.
