Medical Care

Has anyone had to get medical care while at WDW? Is it better to go to a doctor, to a clinic or to Emergency at the closest hospital? Will any/all take our insurance coverage? We've purchased insurance.

We certainly hope we don't need any medical care while we're there, but just want to be prepared.

Thanks, Nora

On the day we were to fly home from Orlando my daughter slammed her hand in the car door. We were concerned she might have broken fingers so raced to the nearest hospital (after stopping at McDonald's for a cup of ice for her fingers). We have nothing but absolute praise for every single person involved that day!
We had our timeshare till the next day and we planned to shop until mid-afternoon then go back to the room for our bags and to get our passports and papers from the safe....so, I didn't have my medical card with me.
I offered my Visa as payment (would claim back when we got home), nope, they didn't need it. They asked our address - surely when I give them a Box number in small town Saskatchewan they will change their minds about taking my credit card - NOPE! They raced around to help us, called ahead with our prescription so we'd go to the front of the line at the pharmacy, brought everything (portable x-ray machine) to the room so we wouldn't have to deal with different departments at the hospital.
We left without paying a dime.

Other than the scar on her hand and the pain she was in it was a wonderful experience.

Once we got home I sent the bill in to my insurance provider (through work, we never get extra travel coverage) and everything was completely taken care of. I should have called my insurance company to get approval before we took her to the hospital but I didn't and everything worked out fine.

Interesting note - before my claim form would have been processed I received a letter from the hospital saying that I could just pay 50% of the bill and they would close the account?!?
I guess maybe they are used to people not paying in the US so they are happy to get even 50%?

I also had to go to Emergency in Maui on Dec 31st of last year (we must seem like a bunch of accident prone freaks) and same thing, everyone was awesome and I paid up front and was reimbursed after the fact. They did take my credit card that time.

We used, what I call, "Mickey's Hospital", [the first aid room beside CP] for dd's panic attack. The attendant [I think she was a nurse] was awesome! Sandra

When we were there last year, we used the doctors on call (I can't recall the formal name) and a wonderful doctor came to our hotel room to assess our daughter who was ill at the time. He was so nice and spent 45 minutes with us examining her (she was 3 at the time and not at all fond of doctors!) and explaining possible diagnoses and treatments. He made arrangements to contact the pharmacy and have her prescription sent directly to the hotel (for a very small fee). We had to pay for the visit up front ($225) however our insurance reimbursed the full amount. We were very happy with the care she received.

It is around the corner from Hotel Blvd. near DTD.
They accepted our insurance.

Years ago we had to take my mother to the clinic with an eye infection. We had blue cross coverage. When we got there, the receptionist was helping another family from Hamilton, Ont. They had purchased Nomad insurance from their travel agent, and the clinic wouldn't accept it. The receptionist was phoning different clinics to find one who would take Nomad. Since we had Blue Cross, they took us right away. The dr. was great- no problems there. As we left, the receptionist was still on the phone, calling clinics to find one who would accept the Hamilton families insurance. My advise is get coverage, but make sure it is widely recognized in the USA.

I understand Blue Cross is now called Liberty Health.
