The key is patience and charm. We made 2 PS reservations (4 & 6) when they wouldn't let us make 10. The hostess were accomodating about waiting for "next to" tables and pushing them together as long as we were patient.
Patience and Charm, might I add one more? Timing!
One thing all must remember, once a restaurant opens and is midway through the night, it gets very hard to plan when two side by side tables might both become available. That is why it is always better to try to book a very early PS for a large group, lets say within the first hour of opening. This way the seating and assigning staff can plan those tables and insure that you are seated promptly and more importantly together.
I also like to "charm" recommendation! Don't approach the podium and demand "I Know We Are Booked on TWO Tables, but WE want to Sit Together!"
Suggestion. Book early. If that is not possible, book and arrive early. "I Know We are 45 Minutes early, but we would realy like to be seated together, so we would like to check-in (everybody in the party is here) and we will wait in the lounge, hallway, wherever to give you time to see if this can be worked out."
Oh, one more thing. Remember it's a restaurant not a banquet hall. Some large parties will have to be spilt into two groups in order for the server to adequatly wait on the table, and the other tables they may already have. Only those who have done it can fully understand how difficult it is to serve a very large table, while also tending to a few others.
