ME for luggage and not you

Ok, I know this has been aked before but I can't find it.. Here is my question
we may need to use ME we may not.. I was thinking of putting in for it.
tagging the luggage and getting on plane. But, we may have friends that can pick us up go to lunch and then take us to resort. In which case we may not get on the bus... will our luggage still make it to the resort?

I read where you're not supposed to use DME for this. But many folks report doing just this, without any problems.

I mean, how would they know? Your luggage is not on the same bus as you are (or would be if you used it) so I can't imagine anyone double checking luggage against passengers checked into DME.

and just to be clear I really don't want to abuse the system but there is a rare chance we may have time to see this family and we would love to spend a little time with them if poss. but there is no way they can do it and take all the luggage with them to..

You won't know until after you check your luggage if your friend will be picking you up at the airport?

nope our flight is sooo darn early - they are asking for time from work that day just to get us lunch and go back to work - we will call when we land and if they are getting off will be waiting for us (they know arrival time) if not on the bus we go - really isn't inconviencing us in anyway since either way we have a ride.. just a last min move.

From what I understand the problam would arise in the rare case where your luggage is misdirected from the airline. You won't know it was misdirected right away, and you will have a hard time getting Disney to take care of you, as you did not check in for the Magical Express bus. They do scan your booklet when you check in for ME, so how would you explain why you were not on the bus, but expected them to handle your bags?
