We are landing at MCO on Sat 7/10 around 3pm. Renting a car and driving straight to Ft. Myers to visit my Granddad for a couple of days. Then driving back to Disney on Mon 7/12.

I saw in one of the post that I-4 in Tampa should be avoided.

What route should I take?

I-4 to Lakeland, 570 to 98, then 98/17-17 to -75 in Punta Gorda?

I-4 to 27, to 29, then 80 to Ft-Myers?

Bump.

I looked at my Trip-Tik and it looks like there is construction near Lakeland and the I-4/75 interchange. Then another on 75 I think near Punta Gorda.

You can fly it for cheap now. Delta has new promotional fares for its in-Florida flights. Check it out on their website.

Good idea. I checked Delta and it's $138 pp. We're flying Delta to MCO, so all we'd have to do is re-check the luggage. Should have time to do that since it's a 2hr layover.

But, it's still about $2-300 more over getting a rental :(

Just take I-4 to I-75. Its not worth the hassle to go on the other routes.

Any Estimate on the Drive time? The AAA map has about 220 miles in less than 4hrs.

Though I'm still intrigued with the flight option. Can I have my luggage transferred to the new flight? Or should I try to "carry it on" then have them load it underneath at the last minute so I can pick it up on the tarmac?

It takes less than 3 hours to get to Ft. Myers. I just did it this weekend. The only way it will take more is if there is an accident or if they close lanes due to the construction. Personally, if it wasn't for the fact they suspended all construction for the long weekend, I would not have taken 1-4 and instead did the Rt. 27 way.

I am sure Delta would be happy to take care of this for you. Probly best to give them a call, see if you can't arrange to have your luggage go straight thru on the outbound leg. There is no reason at all that you shouldn't check you luggage straight thru to Ft Myers; just ask. We generally prefer to let locals do the driving/ flying for us, so we don't become another car on the road with confused out-of-Staters, slowing everyone else down.

Wow - 3 hours. Sounds like someone was cookin' ;)

If that's the case, we'll just drive than wait 2 1/2 hours for the flight to Ft. Myers.

I'll probably bump this closer to the time we leave.

Thanks.
