McCain cancels Letterman appearance

Really I don't see how anyone showing up for Letterman is a big deal to anyone but Letterman, all he would have done is cracked some jokes and talked all crazy trying to entertain people and you wouldn't have learned a thing about anything so to me what's the big deal.

I would have canceled him too, if I were trying to run for president and take care of other business, who has time to sit and have a bunch of jokes cracked at thenselves.

More of the voting public watches Letterman (and Leno) than they do Couric. Which is why the candidates all try to get on the shows. It also allows them to show their more human side when they joke and tell personal stories with the host. It is quite important to their campaigns actually.

But you do have to admit that you know who Letterman likes and pretends to like, he can turn any conversation around and make you look stupid if he wants to, it's not like a news interview where they use tack and keep to the questions and I'm sure Mccain didn't feel like bothing with that with everything else going on.

All news interviews use tact and keep to the questions?

Okey dokey, then I guess you agree that Charlie Gibson used great questions and all the tact in the world with Sarah Palin. And that Sarah Palin just couldn't answer the tough ones.

Honestly, I don't believe ANY of our candidates belong on Letterman or Leno or even The View. I don't care who they are and what political party they belong to, especially during such a truly turbulant time.

The idea that ANY politician would take time out of their schedule to be on such a frivolous show with the current economic crisis would have been irresponsible, imo.

Also, celebrities like Letterman have no idea what the average person is struggling with. David will still be making his $30+ million a year regardless of what happens on Wall St. I fell Letterman is the one who comes off as petty by being so nasty at McCain's cancellation.

True, and McCain has never shied away from these types of shows. There are times though when candidates determine it just isn't appropriate, such as when Obama cancelled his SNL appearance.

True but Obama stated he was cancelling because it wasn't appropriate at the time. He did not lie and say he was getting immediately on a plane to DC, all the while being filmed in a make up chair a block away.

Sorry, I didn't see this so I can't comment on something I haven't seen, but I do love the word Okey dokey.

I totally agree with this you are so right.

I agree with you (don't faint). I'm trying to figure out why Senator McCain really bailed on Letterman.

It might have been bad form for Senator Obama to appear on the night both McCain and Palin were being skewered big time.

After you posted that I turned on Letterman on my Tivo. Wow. It's crazy that they actually broadcast live video footage of him caught in a lie. Pretty smart move by the producers.

I'm of the opinion of many that it's fine that he cancelled (which Letterman said as well) but he personally called Letterman and said he was getting immediately on a plane to DC... then went and did an interview with Couric. Why not just say something like "right now a lot of Americans are in a serious crisis and I feel I need to be seen on a news show not a comedy show?" I think that would have gone over alot better... at the very least it would not have been comic fodder or given them the chance to show him live caught in a lie.

I totally agree! It's just another lie from McCain.

True but Obama stated he was cancelling because it wasn't appropriate at the time. He did not lie and say he was getting immediately on a plane to DC, all the while being filmed in a make up chair a block away.

Do we have an official statement submitted by the McCain camp in which it was confirmed that he personally phoned Dave and said, "Sorry Dave, I need to cancel because I have a flight scheduled for DC at 4:20"?? Or are we just taking funny man's word for what transpired in the communications?? Does Dave, or anyone else, really feel that slighted that McCain didn't add, "Oh, and please accept my apologies for swinging by and chewing on Katie's ear for a moment regarding our current financial crisis before heading out, but I know you understand, pal. I don't want to hurt your feelings and leave you with the impression that she is more important than you, because that could do serious damage to your already over inflated ego"??

So it's ok for someone that wants to be president to lie... as long as it's to a worthless entertainer?

I would have canceled him too, if I were trying to run for president and take care of other business, who has time to sit and have a bunch of jokes cracked at thenselves.

Take care of business meaning attempting to politicalize the economic crisis?

If he had hopped on a plane it would have been one thing... but instead appeared on another show.

You might find Letterman a worthless entertainer but millions of people saw how McCain lied, backed out of a commitment, and politicalized a crisis.

Not the way to get elected.

I disagree! Letterman isn't just a "funny man".

Over the years I have seen him conduct some really great and informative interviews with politicians. I have found him to be very much in touch with what the "average person" is struggling with or concerned about. He is often very much on point and often very gracious no matter what the party affiliation.

Was he a little bitter last night - sure! It was still great TV and he made some very valid points!

True, and McCain has never shied away from these types of shows. There are times though when candidates determine it just isn't appropriate, such as when Obama cancelled his SNL appearance.

For heaven's sake, McCain even did the *Rachel Ray Show* -- defending his barbequeing skills!!! He gets his share of "face time" on the lighter shows as well as news shows.

I think it was low to lie about having to go to Washington to help with the crisis. An honest answer would have been better. And again, the reports say he was still in NYC this morning.

Come on, Charade and Meatball. McCain blew it. You know it. If this would have been Obama you would have been howling for his blood. Aren't you being disingenuous?

As demonstrated, being and admitting are two entirely seperate concepts.

If you don't think Letterman is at all powerful, just look at the headlines today. Just about every news show is talking about it. Every blogger is talking about "the lie". This has spread far beyond just the Letterman audience.

Just google McCain+Letterman+Couric and see how many mainstream news outlets and bloggers are having a field day with this.

Even Drudge, McCain's best friend, sees the irony in it.

McCain, Letterman, Couric and Drudge
The weirdness of the week is best illustrated by a news flash from a place where irony is only unintentional, the Drudge Report:

"David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.

"Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, 'Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?'

"Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, 'You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. This isn't the way a tested hero behaves.' And he joked: 'I think someone's putting something in his metamucil.'

"'He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sarah Palin. Where is she?'

"'What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!'

The McCain campaign will undoubtedly spin this as another media attack on their man. By Drudge?

Couric is a NEWS anchor. Letterman is well... Letterman.

I agree, but have the nerve to tell him like a grown up

(:lmao: )"Dude, Couric offered, and I need to get the word out, and well, Dave, dude, you are cool, but I need serious exposure and this juncture"

Seriously though, McCain needs Couric....at least he should say it to Dave's face, or voicemail. Cause it just looks bad when you just dumped one for the other.

BTW, not an exwife reference.;)

I think most Americans would agree with me in saying I could give a flying f*** if McCain canceled on Letterman. Just as I wouldn't give a crap if Obama did the same thing. There are other more pressing issues than this. I can't stand watching Letterman anymore anyways because his jokes just got so political.

I don't think anbody but Letterman really cares. But I do think it was bad form to make an excuse and show up on another show. At least be truthful.

Frankly the show was probably funnier because he didn't show.:rotfl2:

Yeah, God forbid we should actually get to know a little about our candidates PERSONALLY. If McCain can't walk and chew gum at the same time, he's not fit to run this country. Being on Letterman would amount to chewing gum while he's doing the other stuff. Too bad he doesn't have a partner he can send in his stead.:sad2:

AND....are voters who watch Letterman less important than those who watch Couric? He just had to go on with Couric because Palin screwed up her interview so badly. It's called saving face.
