I agree, 2008 is a done deal, time to get moving on Obama's re-election campaign. :thumbsup2

Interesting

yes, interesting Being it is a 2006 survey. I'm from Illinois and I noticed the democrats got the high marks.

Don't know the party affiliations for other states.

Also this is the first time I heard of them. What is their history/background?

MMMMMMMMMMM.......... I wonder how this was done and what organization did it (the background into the organization).

I don't know, it's not obvious from their website if they have any political leanings. If they did I would dismiss the rankings outright.

For each piece of legislation that affected troops, veterans or military families, IAVA Action Fund took a position either in support of, or in opposition to its passage. The letter grades were derived, using the scales below, from the percentage of times that each legislator's vote matched the official IAVA Action Fund stance.

So a political action committe ranks people against how often they agree with said political action committee and it means what exactly?

Look at their list of supported Congressional votes used to compile the grades and they were against pretty much every GOP offered defense authorization bill and for most Democratic offered bills. So it's hardly shocking that the Democrats come out on top with their grades. They also seem to be a "get out of Iraq now" and "our military is broken" group. I'm not saying they are political operatives, but appear to occupy a niche within military opinion.

Maybe the grades reflect an opinion that Democrat sponsored bills happen to be in their best interests. Let's face it, the GOP isn't famous for taking care of Veterans after they've completed their service. And we all remember this famous reply to a soldier wondering why he has to go into combat without the proper equipment:

"It isn't a matter of money. It isn't a matter on the part of the army of desire. It's a matter of production and capability of doing it. As you know, ah, you go to war with the army you have—not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.—You can have all the armor in the world on a tank and it can (still) be blown up…"

Ahhh yes, Don Rumsfeld, whatever happened to that guy?

That said, I don't have much kudos to give to the Democrats either. The IAVA ratings may or may not be political, I'm not sure at this point.

Of THAT particular group of veterans, yes. The question is... "Does this opinion extend past this subset of Veterans?"

Implying that this grade is representative of the feelings of all "Vets" isn't too unlike saying that the Swiftboaters feelings towards John Kerry were representative of Vietnam Vets in general.

Both parties can and should do better !!!!!!!!

Both parties have two things in common.

The Republicans had Rumsfeld and the Democrates had McNamara. Both tried to fight a war on the cheap. If you go to war, you go to win.

Uh-huh. Military people don't like John McCain. Uh-huh. Ok.

From the Washington Times, March 2006:

"Senate Democrats have mapped a political battle plan for the March congressional recess that calls on lawmakers to stage press events with active duty military personnel, veterans and emergency responders to bash President Bush on virtually every one of his national security policies.

The Democratic memo calls on senators to seek the help of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), which is critical of Mr. Bush.

The IAVA political action committee has raised for $100,000 for Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans running for the House. It has endorsed all seven Democrats in that category who are running against House Republicans. An IAVA PAC spokesman said Republican candidates chose not to seek the group's endorsement."

Uh-huh. Just another little 'ole non-partisan group. You know, one of those non-partisan groups that gets cited in democrat party strategy memos.

Yup, in the media world there's only 2 kinds of groups who evaluate candidates: right-wing and non-partisan.

Is that like there are 10 types of people in the world... binary and wrong?
