What do you make of this story? Money problems? The daughter was supposed to go to college and was upset they had missed two orientation sessions.

Coppell Mayor Jayne Peters Found Dead

The Coppell Gazette reported on July 14, 2010:

"When Peters failed to be at the monthly meeting, Phillips had the police make a check of her home.

When officers arrived, they found an envelope taped to the door with a note and key inside saying that they wouldn't like what they were going to find inside the house. Upon entering the home, they found the daughter on the first floor, dead from a single gunshot wound, and the mother on the second floor, also dead from a single gunshot wound. They also found three other notes in the house giving instructions about care of the animals and who to call. There was no suicide note found.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's office has ruled the deaths as a homicide/suicide, indicating that Corinne was the victim and that Mayor Peters subsequently took her own life."

My first sad reaction was that this woman was tormented at the thought of being "alone" since her daughter was going away to UT, and she had been widowed two years ago when her husband passed away. So she tragically took matters into her own hands so that didn't happen. :sad2:

What a tragic story. :sad2:

There are two things that caught my attention from the above article:

A small collection of flowers, wreaths and cards decorated the front porch of the Peters' 3,850 square-foot brick home, where the mayor and her daughter, Corrine, lived alone. A printed letter said: "Please know that you are loved no matter what happens. I know that God is with you and giving you comfort. You both are with Don, a wonderful husband and father. A family again."

The mayor's husband, Donald Peters, died of cancer in 2008 at the age of 58.

She said that when she recently saw Corinne, the teen was upset about having to miss at least two different summer orientation sessions at the Austin campus, the last time because her mom was having problems with her eye and had to go to a doctor's appointment. But she said Corinne recovered and had been back to her happy self.

Her husband died two years ago and now her daughter was going away to college. Maybe the mayor couldn't handle the loneliness. :confused3

How tragic and sad for that young woman. The mayor had to be suffering from mental illness of some kind to do something so awful.:guilty:

When I first read this story I immediately believed that the victims knew the killer because it just seems to targeted. But I would have never expected this! What a tragedy. :sad1:

Maybe the mayor was diagnosed with something terminal and since her husband recently died from cancer she didnt want her daughter to deal with it?

I don't know why, I guess we may find out, but to do what she did there is no doubt that she was suffering a mental instability. So very sad.

This happened about 5 miles from me. So sad!! The latest on our local news said that the girl had told a friend that she missed a couple of freshman orientations at UT because her mother had been seeing some doctors. I wonder if the mother got a bad diagnosis......still no excuse to kill your own daughter who had everything to live for.

Mind boggling!

You both are with Don, a wonderful husband and father. A family again."

A person left that statement in a card? What an odd sentiment. If I died, and two years later DH killed himself and DS, and if the afterlife consisted of us all being in the same place and retaining the same identities, I surely would NOT be speaking to DH, and I can't imagine DS would, either! It's a pretty solid way of severing family ties and ending love, IMO, to kill someone.

I too will never understand murder-suicide. If you're that freaked out about something, just go to the end part; skip killing the other people and jump to the very end.

I heard about this on the radio last night.

Makes you wonder about what inner demons people struggle with, doesn't it?

mom was having problems with her eye and had to go to a doctor's appointment. But she said Corinne recovered and had been back to her happy self.

I wonder if she had been on some medication for the eye that causes thoughts of suicide, depression (which she already was because of her husband's death,) and it just tipped her over the edge. :sad1:

The notes indicate compassion. The one on the door is preparing whoever enters the house for the tragedy. The ones asking to take care of the pets show compassion for the pets. It doesn't exactly fit with a murder suicide which is more often the result of a domestic rage, the murder being in a fit of rage the suicide the result of either guilt or cowardice not wanting to be punished. The whole thing doesn't fit. It sounds staged to me, at the least it looks like one person wrote the note and another did the killing. I hope they are looking at boyfriends, past and present.

Not every person who commits a crime is suffering from a Mental Illness. If they did our prisons would be empty. A person who is Mentally Ill, in theory according to our laws, can't commit a crime because he/she is incapable of discerning their actions are inappropriate (of course it doesn't stop people from being victims). No matter what, Mental Illness doesn't fit here. Even if the deaths happened at the hands of one or the other person in the house the notes indicate that the person who wrote them knew full-well the trauma of their actions. A full blown Mentally Ill person would never be capable of that.

Police are still investigating, but said that there were four notes--all typed, not handwritten or signed. That's just strange to me. I realize they are calling it a murder/suicide, but something just feels "off" to me about the whole thing.

One local news report said that the mom had recently been to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. My guess is that she got a bleak personal diagnosis, didn't want to go through what her H had gone through and didn't want her D to be an orphan. That she was so organized is chilling. I also live nearby and my D is in drill team, like her D was (but different school).

The organization of it all is very chilling. I wonder how she did it all? did she make all the notes before killing her daughter? I can't imagine that she could kill her daughter and then be composed enough to write all those notes. I wonder if the daughter knew it was happening. Such a bizarre, sad story.

Of course, now it's coming out that their house had been posted for foreclosure a couple of times and that the city had just opened an investigation into her use of the city credit card. Very oddly, the daughter, who told everyone she was off to UT orientation, hadn't even applied there.

Oh my..this whole thing is so odd. How sad, I'm sure their family and friends are utterly bereft.

agnes!
