Does anyone know how much it costs cancer patients to get a "second opinion" at the Mayo Clinic (if they have to pay it all out of pocket)?

I think that would depend on the type of cancer & the tests they need to run. A lot of people around here do try the Mayo clinic & most pay out of pocket. My grandma did, but I have no idea how much it costs.

This is the info page for international patients. If you come please let me know. I'd be more than happy to help you find lodging, etc. There is a hope lodge here for cancer patients and their families.

Thank you! I´m not asking for myself though. There are 2 young, single mothers in my community fighting cancer and they have both stated on their websites how much they wish they could come to the Mayo clinic for second opinions. Money is an big issue since it would cost a lot coming from Iceland. I was hoping I might be able to help them out in some way.

I have spent time at the Mayo and they do accept health insurance but I don't know about the international stuff. A good friend of our's had cancer treatment done at Mayo, including a bone marrow transplant. Their insurance covered pretty much everything including a place for them to stay while he was receiving treatment and a food stipend.

I know they have a Ronald McDonald house there and several low cost hotels/apartments for people undergoing medical treatments.

Well, they could contact the international appointment office. I'm sure they'd be happy to give them some kind of idea how long they'd stay, etc. Also, the Hope Lodge is expanding as we "speak" and would be a nice and cheaper place to stay.
Could there be a couple of benefits for them to raise money for airfare, etc?

I think it is a great idea to go for a second opinion...or even a third opinion, but it can get costly if you do not have medical insurance...

I do hope that you get some help to get that second opinion and you go for it before making any major decisions concerning Cancer.. Cancer is changing all the time and people are making great strides with surviving and living with it.....

Hugs.

I went there 7 years ago to be evaluated for marfans, I saw 3 different doctors had tons of tests 90% paid by insurance, but I remember my mom saying that it added up to about 3500 dollars, each doctor had a fee of 500 and the rest were for the test, even though I had the x rays they wanted their own.
there are a lot of good doctors there
