I subscribe to The Everyday Cheapskate email newsletter put out by Mary Hunt, who is a very well known budget QUEEN princess: She recommended ING DIRECT in today's email issue :cheer2: I'm forwarding this email to many people in hopes that they will feel better about ING. I thought I'd share it with you for the same reason. Enjoy!

Find money in your pockets

Are you a saver? Most Americans aren't. Some people might contribute some to their retirement plans at work, but not have money in the bank for when the refrigerator dies or the transmission goes out. Foolishly, most consumers depend on their credit cards to take care of life's emergencies.

It's not that difficult to start an emergency fund. The bank or credit union where you have your household account will likely open an account for you with a very small initial deposit requirement. Or you can open a savings account with any amount at the highly regarded online bank www.IngDirect.com.

Why bother opening an account if you don't have a cent to your name to save? The reason most people fail financially is not because their incomes are too small but because their spending habits are too big. Start working on your spending habits to find the money you need to save. Then start shoveling it into your savings account.

Here are six easy strategies other readers have shared for how they found money to save. Do what they do and you'll have money in the bank, too.

DUMP THE PRIVATE MORTGAGE INSURANCE (PMI):

If your mortgage is down to 80 percent of your home's value, or less, you might be able to cancel that expensive lender-required insurance called private mortgage insurance (PMI). Call your lender today. This could mean thousands a year in savings -- money for the bank.

KISS YOUR LONG-DISTANCE GOODBYE:

If you have a long-distance plan at home, cancel it. But first get a high quality prepaid long distance calling card from a discount warehouse club or other store like Wal-Mart. You'll pay from 3 cents to 6 cents a minute (depending on the card) instead of the 15 to 20 cents a minute effective rate you're paying now (that's counting all the mystery fees that zing you every month).

GENTLE WASH:

How much do you spend on dry cleaning? Yikes! Just a small effort figuring out your gentle cycle on your home machine or washing fine garments by hand will let you channel that dry cleaning money into the bank!

LOAD UP THE LEFTOVERS:

Don't even tell me how much good food you throw out because it's just easier than making the effort to take it to work tomorrow for lunch. That could mean $5 a day minimum for your bank account.

DON'T SPEND COINS:

You've heard it so many times and it might sound corny, but if you refuse to spend coins, at the end of month you'll have at least $20. That's an easy $240 for your savings account.

GET A BETTER PLAN:

Pick up your cell phone and call customer service. Ask: Am I on the right plan? The company doesn't want to lose you. They know you can leave and take your number with you. If there's a cheaper plan that will work with your pattern of usage, they'll offer it to you. Try it: If there's a cheaper plan, you'll have more money for the bank. You will never know just how great it feels to have money in the bank until you experience that for yourself.

Maybe we can give more referrals now! :rotfl:

This ought to ease some minds.

I am loving watching our balances go up! Can't wait to withdraw to pay for a few nights! I have sent a few referrals to some friends but I think they are skeptical - LOL :o)

Oh well - maybe one day they will read my email and sign up for essentially "free money" - I guess if someone signs up under your referral - you get an email?

Alot of people aren't comfortable with doing things online, especially financial related things. My in-laws are *very* leary of doing anything online - they are so afraid someone is going to steal their identity or all their money.

I never go to the local branch of the bank where we have our checking and other savings account - our paychecks are direct deposited, I pay all our bills online, and I do all the other customer related things (i.e. order checks-the few that I do use!) on the bank's website. I never need a real 'live' teller. I may as well set up a savings account online and earn more interest than at my local bank. :teacher:

I transfer any extra rebates, ebay monies, etc. into mine! I've had mine for 2 years. $20 per week and I will have over $1100 for our trip in January plus interest!

Hope that more Disers sign up~

I just opened my own account and referred my husband and 2 kids - for as little as $4.00 you can end up with $134.00 - plus the interest beats my credit union hands down. I'm already loving it and talking to friends and family so that I can use those MANY referrals (between 4 accounts it's one hundred referrals - you do the math!) Plus, I already set up small withdrawals that we will never even miss to go into these funds. I'm looking forward to watching the accounts grow quietly! (BTW, thanks fellow DISer for the referral! ;))

I loved reading her other suggestions too, knowing that I'm already implementing them. And here I thought I was budget-mindedly-challenged...it makes me feel like I might just be on the right track!

We love our ING accounts!

I have a home equity line of credit, it was very easy to open and they came to my home to complete the process.

To the OP, thank you for posting that article, maybe it will help ease the fear of the unknown for a few.
I love my Ing account and have told others about it. I have sent them referrals but they haven't signed up. There are many people still skeptical about online banking. :confused3

You're welcome! NONE of my IRL friends/family have taken the bait yet though :confused3 It is kind of funny, being wary of online banking, since all the BANKS themselves have all their info online, essentially. All these instances where we see banks getting jacked into - it isn't an individual's account - it is the bank's records. So people who think they are protecting themselves by not banking online really are at the mercy of the bank's security system :confused3 Kinda scary when you think of it.

ING rocks :cheer2:

Yes, I always get an email when someone signs up under my referral :flower:

I think I will be opening an account today after reading all the good things on this board. But just one question, are there any fees with ING and what are the bonuses of having a referal vs. just signing up?

No fees at all involved!

If you sign up with someone's referral, you get $25 free in your account!

Cool, huh? :cool1:

Thanks for posting that info! I love ING!! Maybe this will help others feel comfortable banking in a less conventional way.

Sisterspooky, I believe you need to pm someone for a referral. ;)

I'm trying to sign up and it asks for Driver's License number or State ID #. I don't have either of those. What can I do?

I had several people who asked for referrals and then never signed up. I never could quite figure that out. :confused3 I think it is one of the best deals for "free" money going on today with no catches of any kind.

Just a reminder to all, asking people to send you a referral is not permitted on the DIS.

Also, asking people to contact YOU for a referral is not permitted either.

We encourage people who are interested in a referral to PM or e-mail someone asking for one.

Please check out at least the first two posts on THIS THREAD .

If someone has posted to that thread, it is almost a given that they have referrals left.

THANKS!
