Maybe the 3rd time is the charm. Few questions remain

I get it, but the pp said she could not go past the end of summer. So having extra time to use them was not a benefit.

That's looking at it a little narrowly. It gives options to either use or rent or gift. Having time for options is never going to be a bad thing. If one prefers to just let unused points expire that's fine, but there's really no need for that as long as one has some time on their side.

Exactly - we could have gifted those points to a family member if we had to - or heck even TWO family members with as many points as that trip was. We could have booked something for my parents at HHI and something else for my BIL & SIL at Disney whenever THEY could go if there had been more time to use them.

Normally we are fine with our Dec UY - but I was just trying to point out that to never say never to having to cancel a trip is unrealistic. It can and DOES happen. This other poster may have to eat his own posts one day....

Yes you could have gifted those points. But that's not what you wanted to do. You wanted to take your vacation. We would have done the same. So even tho you can gift them for longer, if that isn't something you'll tend to do, then it's not a benefit. We're like you... we're not going to just not take a vacation that we planned a year for. We'll improvise like you did.

All I said was that picking a UY is not as important as other factors. You somehow made the leap to thinking some people are immune to disasters (?). Things Like making sure you love Disney World enough that you want to go for many years to come, and choosing a home resort that you like are very important. UY selection falls somewhere way down the list after these two and several other factors. Some people put UY up there as a critical thing, but it's not that complicated nor that impacting. You just think of a time around when you'll go most often, and pick a UY a little before that. But if you go a few months ahead or back, it's not really going to make much difference. For people who book and cancel reservations often, UY can be more important. But if you're like me, and barring the unthinkable, you're not likely to cancel (and not rebook) trips, then UY doesn't matter much.

Why so snarky? I didn't say we would never be faced with adversity. We have many times... surely you realize. I said we are not prone to cancelling our trips once we make them. There is a big difference. When we book a vacation, we're pretty much going to go. I think this is kind of like you based on your story.
