Hi! We have res. at POR for June 13-18. Ds is out of school and we're driving. Now SWA has these great air fares in May and the 3 of us can fly for $444 and rent a car for $124. So, we're considering changing our dates to May 2-7. We can get rooms at POR for the same rate ($94). But ds would miss a week of school, and we don't like that idea. It might be worth it if A) the weather is cooler and B) it's much less crowded. I don't mind driving vs flying, so the idea of flying isn't that much more attractive to me.

I've heard from some folks that the crowds June 13-18 won't be that much larger than the May crowds b/c May is FLA residents month? Is this true? Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks,
Corina

With the prices of gas going up, if you could get a good flight rate, I'd fly! Missing one week of school won't put your child back, I say go for the plane, plus the kids won't be out of school at that time and it will be less crowded and a little less hot, maybe! We are going in may and I booked before I found this site, so I feel I got pretty jipped on hotel prices - we have PC for $88 a night, so you would have a good rate at the moderate. You'll have fun, no matter what you decide. :)

I second the May trip. May is a great time to go. Crowds are down and the weather is great, cooler than June. I too am taking kids out of school for 1 week. I don't believe it would hurt them at all. I also agree with the gas prices the way they are, fly! Have Fun!

While May may be FL residents month - they are still in school down there.

If you go those June dates, you will have all of Florida, all of the SE and many parts of the rest of the country out of school.

We are heading in May as soon as we are out, which is a week before the rest of our neighboring state and a couple weeks before FL.

I think there will be a big difference in the crowds !!!!

I think there are some variables you need to consider. What grade is your son in? There is a difference in missing a week of 1st grade as to missing a week of 5th grade. Is he a straight A student or is he having some difficulties? Will he be able to make up the missed work before the end of school? Has he missed much school this year? Most school districts (and states) have limits on the amount of days missed before they are held back. I would discuss all of this with his teacher before he misses a week of school.

Thanks for all the input, but dh and I talked about it and he nixed the idea of pulling ds out of school. Ds is in 3rd grade and an A student. His teacher thought he'd be ok, but dh (former teacher) is against the idea. I thought he might be against it and I was just looking for more ammo to convince him to change our plans to May.

Oh well, we'll have a good time in June. Just a little sweatier and a little more crowded!

Thanks again.

When do your schools get out? We live in the Orlando area and all the schools get out on May 25th. Right now the plan is to pick up the kids at school that day and then drive straight over to Disney and spend the rest of the week there.

I wouldn't take him out of school at the end of the year. If it were in the beginning or middle, maybe then, but not at the end. I think you made the right decision.

corinascot - I know it is a tuff decision and everyones situation is different but they do learn new things everyday and it is hard to make up a week at school. My wife is a 2nd grade teacher and she says that really puts a burden on her. She has to schedule special time with the student, get them to retake missed tests and then the student can be behind for a while in his current studies. We are also going in June. I would love to go next month when the crowds are smaller and it is cooler but an education is also very important. Enjoy your trip and we might see you there. - LJ01
