Short answer is No.

Onboard the ship everything is done via the KTTW card (except for tips). The stores and bars don't take any cash.

Granted I haven't cruised on the Magic in almost 2 years but I would swear I paid for some drinks and small stuff with cash in the gift shops. Are you sure about this? Regardless, Emma your son could be given charging privileges...kids take right to using their card. You just need to impress upon him he can only charge up to whatever cash he's given you.

Thanks for your reply Jeff

So am I right in saying that I can give him charging privaleges on his KTTW card with a limit of say $100 which I can pay off using cash?

He has been saving so hard and wants to pay for his things out of his own money

This might be a good way of doing it and will help him learn to be responsible with his money

I have a seven and nine year old and we batted around the same situation. We were recently on a royal caribbean cruise and the biggest problem we had with the kids having charging privileges was the fact that they kept leaving their cards at the pool etc and either loosing them or leaving them where it was easy to steal. While I am confident everyone on our sailing will be of the highest moral standards, we felt uncomfortable essentially giving our young children a credit card.

For anyone who has AT&T as their wireless carrier you can add international calling for $5.99 a month(no long term commitment.) They still charge you roaming per minute fees but the world traveler plan charge is less(.95 per minute from Spain, France & Italy/$2.29 from Malta & Tunisia.) Also, I can send a text for .50 and receive unlimited for free(we have unlimited texting.) It's not the best deal out there but we're leaving a daughter at home who is 8 months' pregnant.

:welcome:

We have independantly booked a Dolphin Swim for 1pm whilst visiting Malta
(It was much cheaper than the DCL excursion and I am told that it is easy to get there by bus)

Do you have any idea how long the actual Dolphin swim lasts and if there is enough to do at the park if we were to arrive at approx 10am?

I have tried to ask the questions by e-mail but cannot seem to get an answer

Any help you could offer would be much appreciated!

Can you tell me where you booked your Dolphin swim? I would like to look into that also, but didn't want to pay the DCL price.

Thanks so much in advance.

Cindy

Hi Cindy,

We booked it direct through their website but you can only book for the afternoon (1pm) as DCL have taken all of the am slots

It was 120 EUROS for the Dolphin Swim (Same price for Adult or Child) and 15.5 EUROS for any spectators which is basically the entrance to the Marine Park itself

I have been told by someone on Cruise Critic that it is less than 1 EURO on the Bus (No 68 from Valletta Terminus to Bahar ic-caghaq) which takes approx 45minutes and that there is a bus which stops right outside

There is also a Sealion Show/Reptile House/Dolphin show also to see whilst there

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your input - I hadn't considered this aspect.
Mmmmm not sure what to do now

How about give him charging priveliges but you hold on to his card...either way better since then he wont be losing it.....if he is mainly planning on buying souveniers in the shops then it wont be hard to hold on to it and such and give it to him when he needs it.....

another idea is once he hits his 100 dollars see if then guest service can remove the priveleges (could call disney and ask)

We have AT&T and I used that plan for our Aruba trip. The cost was $130 for 63 minutes. Just be careful with the usage. We also have iphones - there are instructions on how to turn off certain feature so there will be less roaming charges. (Iphone Travel Tips on the AT&T website)

good luck :)

If you can't find it, I know that I can. Just let me know. I can make a Costco run. :)

Jill

Thanks Jill

I'll let you know if peterpanstout can't get them.

This is the kind of thing i love about Dis, people willing to help out what are effectively complete strangers (though obviously we'll all be best buddies in a couple of weeks :cool1: )

It's definitely possible to change charging privileges during the cruise (guest services will do that for you - I was at guest services getting something last yr while someone was doing just that - their little teenage darling had been running up large bills on the arcade).

My husband just spoke with Verizon two nights ago (he called them 4 separate times just to be sure the info was correct!) and they have something called the Global Value Plan. It's $65 a month, and you can send and receive unlimited calls and texts, and check your email - as much as you want. No extra call charges, no roaming. So they told us to call and add it to our phone the day we're leaving, and then cancel it the day we get home, this way we're only charged for the days we are on vacation and using it. Does AT&T have something like that, maybe?

Did you all also check to see if your model of phone works in Europe. I'm on Sprint, which also offers an international roaming plan (which we used in Mexico last summer), however my Blackberry won't work over there. There are only 1 or 2 models on Sprint that have capabilities in Europe and, of course, mine isn't one of them. :confused3

Alright, I am looking at our excursions, and we booked the Nice & Eze w/ wine and cheese for our Villefranche day. But that doesn't start until 2 pm. Would it be possible to visit Monaco/Monte Carlo on our own in the morning? Or would it be too busy a day and cutting ourselves too close? Thanks!

Isn't that the way it always works? Yes, we were told that our phones (we're only going to bring one, though, b/c the $65 is per phone) WOULD work. We had inquired about 'renting' one through Verizon, but they said ours would be fine. Now I'm nervous, though, so I'll probably call back and double check, just to be sure!

We will have our European cell phones with us, we may not use them though. But if someone needed to put their sim card in a phone and use it for a while I think I could handle loaning it out if needed. I don't know how my husband feels about it though. We also have an extra one I think. He cracked the screen but it is still readable, but we got him a new one anyway.

Let me know and we will bring the extra one just in case.

It's hard to believe but I'm leaving 2 weeks from tomorrow!!!!! :cool1:

I just transferred money into my brand spanking new Fidelity checking account so I can use my check card. It only charges 1% transaction fee and reimburses ATM fees. I alerted them to the fact I was using it overseas so hopefully they won't block it.

I have soooo much left to do. I did sit down and write out my packing list Monday night. Now I just need to settle down and start packing.
