So I was getting all pumped up for 10 days at the Fort with my parents and teenage son when all Hades breaks loose with my grandmother and uncle and now it seems I may have to cancel my trip. I'm 2 weeks out and the family that was supposed to come to help out while we were on vacation suddenly got an amazing deal on a cruise (not a Disney Cruise either) that they couldn't pass up. Here's why I'm the angriest about this, I've had this trip planned for 7 months and it's been paid for for over a month and it's on Military discounted tickets that expire the end of Sept. Now I could reschedule for when someone else could be home to help but my mom can't take anymore leave time from work until next year and the tickets won't be any good if she could. Yep I'm feeling really down having a good day. If anyone reads this and wouldn't mind I could use some pixie dust or prayers or both. I really think my family needs this break my mom works 7 days a week between her job and taking care of my grandmother so my uncle can work on the weekends. Thanks!

I'm sorry. I will pray for you. :) Are you sure you need extra people to go? Maybe you can work it out with just you guys.

It's just 4 of us and my parents have to go to use the Military tickets.

I guess I'm a little confused as to why you need extra help with your parents. Maybe it's just a lack of information in the original post. When I said "just you guys" I was including your parents. :)

Edit: Or did you mean someone must stay home with grandma? That makes sense, lol!

Not sure where you are located, but have you called respite care? In our State, the local county health dept may have lots of ideas and resources for you.

I hope you can find someone to help out! We're 2 weeks out now too and I'd be furious if we had to cancel now. :grr: How frustrating!

Not sure if I understand the problem, but if I am reading this right, you need somebody to take care of Grandma?

If that is the case you need respite care. Many ALF's and Adult Family Care Homes offer short respite stays. You need to start making calls. Another option is an agency like "Visiting Angels" who would take care of Grandma at home. Truthfully, I'd be more comfortable with Grandma going to a care home or ALF for the 10 days, rather than having strangers in my home while I'm out of town.

I COMPLETELY sympathize with your situation. My grandmother is 94. My grandfather is 91. God bless them for living to such an age! They used to live upstate NY, but they only lived close to their son (my uncle) and his wife. My grandmother never treated my aunt particularly well and my uncle works a lot so they weren't much help. My aunt and my mother (their daughters) were clearly the better people to take care of them. My grandfather is fine but my grandmother has dementia. They were living in a two story apartment and living on meals on wheels. The crazy upstate dr had my grandmother on 7 different pills and she was in a complete fog. He also told my aunt she had about six months, so my aunt decided to take them to live with her, also near my family. That was five years ago. We're grateful to have so much family around and I'm old (32) to have ALL of my grandparents living. But I see the ENORMOUS toll it is taking on the rest of my family. It's really really awful. They can't be left alone and it's driving my aunt insane. She takes long trips and my mom has to move in for the entire time my aunt is away. Both my parents and my aunt and uncles marriages are suffering because of it.

Needless to say- I know what you are going through. I highly suggest you try to hire someone to care for grandma while you all are away. Caring for an elderly relative can be such a strain and your family sounds like it needs the break. Good luck and let us know what you can do.

thanks to all who gave advice. My grandma's doctor order home health care for her and my uncle is on his way to recovering and will be staying at my grandma's, so we are going! I'm so excited 11 days at The World.

I'm guess'n those folk have never been to the Fort before, cause if they had I can't imagine them want'n to go onna cheap cruise instead, :confused3..

Sorry they did ya'll wrong,,(maybe they don't deserve the Fort),
after all the Fort is xtra special and for the common Joe they just can't see how the Fort aficionado see's and feels about the Fort/Disney and how we feel about sharing it with our family..sorry.

YAY!! So happy you're going!! :D I have to agree with Born 2 Fish...who in their right mind would pass up a Disney vacation for a cheap cruise?? To each his own, I suppose.

I think you are both misunderstaning the OP.

OP is going to WDW with her parents and her son. Her mom takes care of Grandma at home, and they had people lined up to care for her while they were away. Those people backed out last minute to go on a cruise. They were never going to WDW, they were supposed to care for OPs Grandma at home.
