May be obvious to others, but is contact solution

Hopefully others will believe this. They don't seem to want to believe me!! :thumbsup2

Why wouldn't we believe you? It's allowed. It's common. TSA sees it every day.

Many (most?) of the travel sized bottles are 4oz. We'd be seeing 100 mil bottles if the solution wasn't exempt. You might be able to get a complimentary trial bottle from your eye doctor. Anything to reduce what you carry is good.

What contact lens solution is the OP looking for?

I think some posters get the wrong idea about security based on isolated situations, exaggerated, shown on TV.

When I traveled with contacts in the 3-1-1 world, here's what I've done. I created my little 3-1-1 bag with everything unrelated to the contacts. I created a second clear plastic bag (gallon sized) with everything related to my contacts. Full size solution, extra contacts, two cases, etc. Took both plastic bags out of my suitcase for the TSA line, put them in the bin with my shoes and never got one word about it.

Hope this helps!

That's sort of what I do. I use a gallon bag to put my Victoza pen, my mom's insulins (in their own little insulated bag), syringes, her nose and eye drops, and my contact lens solution. I then put that larger bag in a bin with our 3-1-1 bags. They have never received even a second look.

I have never had a problem with full sizesolution when flying domestic, sometimes they have taken the solution to go and test it
:confused3

However, when I have flown to the Europe, I have no problem getting it there but it has always been confiscated on the way back at heathrow, gatwick and schipol.

Why??? Because after I posted what the TSA has done with our situation, posters repeatedly came along and continued making suggestions for things like doctor's notes, travel sizes, etc. There is no need.
But, people will always want to think the worst case scenario. So, if it makes anyone nervous??? Pack a full sized in your checked bag. Then, if you can find a travel size, go for it.

Those posters are idiots. People who don't know the facts are better off not posting then posting garbage.

Posters suggested travel sized bottles of solutions. The travel sized bottle for at least 3 different brands of solution is 4oz. Travel size is for packing convenience, not because of any TSA regulation.

You don't transfer sterile contact lens solution into a different container for a variety of reasons listed by a PP. Yes, the poster who made the suggestion sounded like an idiot. If you think your point is probably idiotic then why bother posting?

You made an intelligent point. I skimmed right over the idiots.

A lot of people wear contacts. A lot of people are diabetics. Nothing new to the TSA. Maybe a new agent will have to spend 30 seconds asking a supervisor if it's OK.

goofy, it's not that people don't believe you, it's that people don't read threads before replying.

I've noticed it on numerous threads of late. People will comment asking something that if not answered on the first page was sometimes even answered in the OP. Pet peeve of mine.

Interesting. We should believe what you tell us has been done in your situation. Yet when some one posts what has happened to them, you want to disregard it or disparage it because it never happened to you.

Sometimes it is appropriate to warn travelers that not all Airport Security Screeners perform their role, in what most posters here agree is "theater", the same way or to the same script. There are inconsistencies!

Many message boards have the same issue. People want to comment but don't want to take the time and read the entire thread. I've sort of learned to accept it.

My pet peeve is people who don't have the slightest idea if the information they're posting is correct but still post. Goofy posted the correct information. She flies. Sounds like someone in her family wears contacts. Question answered. Didn't stop some idiots from posting rubbish.

Maybe if a person posts. No replies. Bumps post. After a couple of days I may make and educated guess, and so indicate.

I agree this is not a 'Dis' phenomenon. I may not wait a couple days like you do, but I will also indicate whether I'm guessing, or what I "understand" happens, etc.

Contact lens solution is a medical exception to the 3-1-1 rule. An uneducated, possibly new, TSA agent has an issue. Ask for a supervisor. Rushing to make a plane. Consider discarding it. I'd rather make my flight then be right but waiting for the next plane.

Suggestions were just wrong. Travel size contact solution is typically in a 4 oz container. You don't transfer solution to another container for a variety of reasons.

FWIW Many hotels, maybe not Disney, have a variety of complimentary items available for guests who forgot to pack a razor, toothbrush...Contact lens solution is frequently one such item.

edited to add: One of the purposes of security is to make passengers feel safe. Make the average "Joe' comfortable getting on a plane. People like going to the "theater" That said I agree things could be changed. People need to contact their representative if they have issues. Aren't the body scanners going? I don't know what option I have a bigger problem with....TSA bought into technology which doesn't really do what needs to be done or TSA caved into pressure. People like high tech. People like seeing things. Reinforcing the cockpit door had an impact on safety but it's not visible to the average passenger.

Oh please!!!! I seldom disregard other's first hand experiences. There are times when those experiences may not be indicative of what others are likely to experience though.
I have never disparaged an experience because it wasn't my experience. I 'may' have said I find something hard to believe based on what I have experienced.

We are not discussing TSA 'theatre' here. Yes, people can sometimes run into a situation that is unlike what others have experienced. But, I can only say, with any assurance, what has actually happened to me. Others may do with that what they will.

We are not going to bog down yet another thread with TSA theatre discussion.

I have traveled with exempt liquids many times the only problem is the extra time it takes they have always swabbed the liquid and my hands not a big deal if the airport is not busy and you have extra time but can be if you are short on time in a busy security line I always feel if you can avoid the extra it's just easier you will never know when you won't have that extra time. the less exemptions the faster the lines in general go too.
And it is perfectly safe according to my eye DR to put solution into your contact case beforehand.

You generally rub and then rinse your lenses with your multi-purpose solution prior to putting the lenses in the case, with solution, for disinfection. Solution in your case lets you take your lenses out but won't let you do a proper job cleaning your lenses.

You could put the solution in your checked bag and bring a travel sized bottle in your carry on bag. Your bottle is 4 oz, you didn't allow enough time and you don't want to wait the extra couple of minutes to be swabbed....Discard the bottle and use the solution in your checked bag.

People who are are so short of time the extra couple of minutes might cause them to miss their flight could miss their flight even if they didn't have the solution. One red light will delay you about as much as the swab.

Wellllll, not always. My dd uses a solution that is a one step process....sooooo much better than the one I had to use when undergoing cataract surgeries!!! She's puts her contacts in the case at night, pops them out in the morning and puts them directly into her eyes. It's really pretty awesome.
If you want to get a smaller, travel size, check with the eye doctor's office. They have sample sizes for anything they dispense.

If you can't find travel sizes in the stores you could always ask the eye doctor if they have samples or trial sizes.

THIS! I worked as an optician for years, and if we didn't have it, we were able to call the manufacturer and get it, most times with no cost to the patient. (and I'd usually give them at least 4 travel sized ones!)

I personally have had good luck finding solution in 2 oz bottles. I've seen packaged as travel kit near regular size contact solutions. I've had good luck finding smaller bottles at CVS, walgreens, target, Meijer( regional one stop shop), walmart has been hit or miss for me. I personally like to have smaller bottle on me when traveling b/c it never fails that will one time I get dirt in eye, rub contact out, airplane aire dries out contact etc. I use smaller bottle in work bag so usually have one floating around.

I learned something today! Yay, Dis boards. We didn't know full size contact lens solution was medical & exempt from 3-1-1. Now I don't have to stress & run around & try to find unless I actually WANT to. Thanks for the info!!

I Just got my eyes checked on Thursday and had to change contact manufacturers because my old ones are no longer made... I have used AMO complete for years now (same DR I saw on thur recommended yrs ago) because everything else bothered my eyes. They now only use Alcon pure moist. Sometimes I think it depends on if they get a good contract deal with a manufacturer. He did say that they don't have patients complain about it. It's great for people with sensitivities. So I will give it a try....
My point to this post was not all offices carry multiple types...mine doesn't....
