May 8th and 9th... Asheville NC... what to do and see?

If the weather is clear Chimney Rock might be fun to do. You can either hike up to the rock, or take the elevator and the view is amazing! A short mile hike takes you to a beautiful waterfall where they filmed part of the movie " The Last of the Mohicans"

I also recommend Tupelo Honey Cafe. The sweet potato pancakes are to die for. Be prepared to eat at an off time or wait. This little place is enormously popular.

Be sure to visit the gardens at Biltmore and do not miss the winery. If you are into Afternoon Tea.....the Inn serves a fantastic one every day from 2:30-4:30.

Hendersonville and Black Mountain are wonderful little towns. A bit further west is Waynesville, which is about 35 minutes from Asheville and another wonderful little town to shop and explore in.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have a great time here in Asheville.

It's been many years since we were at the Pisgah Inn, but at that time they didn't serve alcohol at all. You could bring it in (wine or liquor as I recall) but there was none to purchase there. Food was good and the view even better....

Oops, edit that.... just clicked on the menu and they have a wine list. YEAH! Smart move, especially given how many of the entrees go so well with wine.

Chimney Rock looks VERY Cool. We'll take the elevator! Went to Tupelo Honey Cafe website.... right up our alley. We may or may not even do the Biltmore. We have seen similar things in England. It will probably depend on time.

I figure that we'll get to Asheville early Monday and leave mid-day on Wednesday.

What about 12 Bones BBQ?

And we'll skip Hendersonville for now, not enough time.

Thanks.

Chimney Rock is several miles away -- just wanted to make sure you know. It's closer to Lake Lure.

Funny story. Some Warren Wilson college students doing work for my inlaws were talking about working on the sets for Last of the Mohicans, and one of them said he couldn't believe how out-of-shape Daniel Day Lewis was, that he just huffed and puffed up the mountain. Well, DH and I climbed Chimney Rock, did several of the trails and hiked to the waterfall last summer totally spur-of-the-moment after an extended family weekend on Lake Lure. I'm not sure I've recovered yet. I had come expecting a tourist excursion -- not a real hike.

And on the really important question -- barbecue. There's a great place in Shelby, which you will drive through on your way from Charlotte. It is called Bridges -- has great Q and fantastic hush puppies.

See, know your ( my ) priorities! Thanks.

Dang, it looks like a place I could spend a whole week ( Asheville )!

Yeah, Chimney Rock is about an hour outside of Asheville (but only about 32 miles). We went last weekend and it was great. We decided to buy annual passes. We took the elevator down but walked up. Funtimes.

If you want real BBQ, I wouldn't waste time trying to find some in Asheville. Lexington is a short drive from Charlotte, and is known for their BBQ. So, if you have time in that area, I would highly suggest it! :thumbsup2

Have a great time in Asheville! My 4yo dd & I usually go shopping there every weekend after her ballet class!

My vote for great BBQ is on the way to Boone. Pappy's is yummy!

Is that the legendary Lexington BBQ?

I would also suggest Waynesville.Main Street has quite a few nice shops. But thats about all it has.
Thats where I live :teeth:

Forgot to add,my DH just got through doing some carpet at Pisgah Inn.He said the drive was about 30 to 45 minutes from Asheville.
