Hi all I'm new here and planning our 1st trip to Disney, to say I'm confused is an understatement!
I really need advice on a couple of things and you guys seem to really know your stuff!
We're staying at CBR for 2 weeks, have upgraded to middle dining plan. I have made a few ADRs but will probably wing it for the others, really wanted to book BOG but there's absolutely no availability the whole time we're there.
The questions I have are:
Can you get water to drink in the parks without buying it? I understand the resort mug can only be used at CBR.
I have no idea what to book fastpasses for as we've never been before, does anyone have any suggestions? My daughter will be 11 so I'm not sure if she'll be bothered meeting princesses etc. Husband and daughter do love rides though, I'm the bag lady!
Any guide on spending money? We dont want to take loads but also don't want to run out.
With the dining plan I'm concerned that there won't be enough food as its only 2 meals a day, plus the snack, my daughter isn't one to fill her belly to last hours so I know we'll end up buying things in the park.
Does anyone know if the resort's actually take any notice of special requests? Long story but I suffered a terrible leg injury over Christmas and will likely still be in pain and have reduced mobility so am going to ask the travel agent to add that we need a room close to facilities or I'll never be able to cope.

That's all for now but I'm sure there'll be more questions, thanks in advance for any advice, I've been stressing so much about this trip!

1. ADRs - when you say "middle" dining plan, I'm assuming you mean 1 QS, 1 TS and 1 snack per day. We personally find that to be MORE than enough food. We don't do the dining plan anymore, just doesn't work for our eating habits, but when we did, we usually used the did a bigger breakfast, either a TS character meal around 9:30ish or a QS at the resort. We do a snack during the day and then a dinner (depending on what we did in the morning, we'd swap at night). Sometimes we would come OOP (out of pocket) for a snack here and there, but not often. You can always carry granola bars, pretzels an apple or something with you to hold your DD over. I usually carried some snacks in my bag.

2. BOG - keep trying. I know they recently announced some changes to how BOG will work, but I didn't follow because we aren't doing the parks this year.

3. Water - yes, you can get free waters. Just ask. They are in smaller paper cups, but we do that a lot, because I don't like to lug around water bottles for everyone. Resort mugs are only good at your resort

4. Spending money. That's a personal preference. How much to plan to buy? We limit DD to 1 souvenier per park. Although now at 11, she's kind of over all the stuff, but she usually will picked up stuffed animal along the way. Maybe a sweatshirt.

5. Special requests - not guaranteed, but I've made a few and had them granted. When you check in, be sure to ask where you room is and if it's too far, explain your situation and ask to be moved to where you want to be. Disney is usually very accomodating.

6. Fastpasses - do you have park hoppers? Do you plan to do rope drop? Do you plan to do extra magic hours? A lot goes into play with FPs. On our last trip (January 2014), we had hoppers so we saved our FPs for the park in the afternoon on most days and I didn't use any for meet & greets. I also found them easy to change around once in the park because several of the ones I had I didn't need because it wasn't crowded so I would just switch them around on my phone:

MK - I personally would fast pass the new Seven Dwarves ride (wasn't open when we were there), Space Mountain, and probably Buzz. But then there is also Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain. It's just takes some deciding what's best for your family

AK - Expedition Everest and the Safari. We usually do AK in the morning so we've never had to use FP there

DHS - Toy Story Mania, Rock N Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, although you'll have to pick & choose here because they are tiered and they won't let you do all three. Decide what's important to you.

Epcot - Soarin, Test Track and I can't remember what all else we did. Epcot isn't our family's favorite other than the food :)

Good luck with your planning. Find some threads and read, read, read. There is lots of good info on these boards.

First and foremost do not stress!! It's a vacation so treat it like one! What I like to tell newbies is don't to try to do it all. If you do you WILL stress yourself out. 2 weeks is plenty of time to see and do everything you want! My top tip for newbies planning is to sit down with your family and choose you "must-dos" for each park. Make these your top priorities and let he rest fall into place. Also, take breaks!! Growing up, we would always head out to a park in the morning, come back to the resort mid-day for some rest/pool, then head back out to a park refreshed! If you try to push yourself to go all day, especially on your first trip, it will become tiring and a lot less magical in my opinion.

On to your questions!

Dining Plan
I personally have never used a Disney Dining Plan mainly because to me it's too much food and would be waste of money. My main travel companion is my mom and neither of us are big eaters. One trip a family who was checking out gave my mom and I their leftover credits -- they had 16 snacks left over PLUS some QS credits! We couldn't even use them all! With that being said, I don't think you need to worry about your Dining Plan not being enough food. One little tip I've picked up from Cast Members regarding the dining plan is to learn what qualifies as a 'snack.' For example, if your family isn't big on breakfast you can use your snack credit for a yogurt or some fruit and that can be breakfast. Just because breakfast is considered a "meal" doesn't mean you have to use a QS credit for it. Where the Dining Plan will really save you money is on TS meals.

Water
Depending on when you go, some places WILL have some self serve water stations. For example, during the hot months Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom will have this for guests who are waiting for their reservation since they have to wait outside. However, this will be little dixie cups not the amount you are probably thinking of. Just because the resort mugs are only good for refills at your hotel you can still bring them into the park with you and fill them up at water fountains. This is TOTALLY acceptable. Also, Disney allows you to bring in your own food and drink into the park. You can use the Garden Grocer service and purchase a case or two of waters to be delivered to your room for your arrival day. THIS will save you money on water when in the parks -- especially since you can take them in with you! When it comes to saving money on water/water bottles I would definitely recommend taking advantage of Garden Grocer especially since you will be there for 2 weeks.

Cash
My trips are usually 5nights/6 days and will take a couple hundred cash with me. I'll use this for snacks, quick serve, & souvenirs. Use your discretion as to how much "walking around money" you feel you will need. We tend to do half spend cash/half charge to the room. Room charges have a limit of $1,500 - just a number to keep in mind.

Special Requests
In my personal experience the resorts have been awesome with special requests. I always call and request a room in a specific building/section/floor/location and more often than not I get my wish! You don't have to go through your travel agent, you can just call the hotel directly. Give them a ring and tell them your requests for a building close to the food court and on a GROUND FLOOR. CBR DOES NOT HAVE ELEVATORS AND IS VERY SPREAD OUT. They do have an internal shuttle to take you to each section but I would highly suggest you look at the resort map and have an exact section and/or building to request. (I've inserted a link below) 'B' on the map is Old Port Royle Centertown. This is the main stomping ground with the food court, pool, gift shop, etc. Looking at the setup you will want to request to be in Trinidad North or Martinique. Also notice the 'A' on the map signifies the check-in area and where the DME will drop you off. Another really cool link I've added is from Touring Plans. Thye have a room finder section for each resort on their website along with lots of facts all to help you request the right room! I've used this alot myself

FastPass
Magic Kingom:
7 Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Peter Pan (always longest line in Fantasyland). You can also FastPass lunch at BOG they have a separate website for this which I have listed below
https://beourguestlunch.disney.go.com/

Epcot:
Soarin' and Test Track
**You will have to choose between the two. You are not allowed to have an FP for both at once. Soarin's line can be boring so I would suggest to choose Soarin' over TT.

Hollywood Studios:
Toy Story Mania, Rock N' Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Star Tours
**You will have to choose between RnR and ToT. I would suggest taking an FP for RnR because the line can be very boring. ToT has great themeing throughout and shade which makes the wait a lot more bearable.

Animal Kingdom:
Kilimanjaro Safari & Expedition Everest are the musts! Other good ones to FP are Kali River Rapids and Dinosaur (I went on Dinosaur for the firs time when I was 10 and was terrified; it's loud, dark, things popping out at you)

Hope this helps you and helps to ease your stress!!! Remember to have fun and enjoy all the magic!! :goodvibes

Out of curiosity, what ADRs do you have booked?

Oh wow thank you all for the amazing replies! So helpful and yes I do need to stop stressing so much. I've been wondering about hiring a scooter and will see what the legs like nearer the time.
The ADRs I've booked are chef Mickey, tuskers, fultons crab house, mama melrose and fantasmic, California grill, Crystal palace and after your advice yesterday I tried BOG again and managed to book! All of these are for dinner. Is there any other must do meals that I've missed?

Thanks again for all your help and advice, I'll get reading :-)

Great ADRs! I think you're perfect for a first trip, and you will definitely get the most out of your TS Dining Plan credits with these.

Chef Mickey's is a classic and must-do for a first trip! It feels very Walt Disney World, especially when the monorail comes through the Contemporary. Same goes for Crystal Palace! I feel like both such character dining staples that people need to do at least once. Such good Disney vibes!

I've never had Tusker House for dinner, only have gone for breakfast. I'm sure dinner is just as good! They have an awesome selection there.

Mama Melrose is quirky and cute inside. Might not be the world's best Italian food, but it gets the job done! Also, the right choice for the Fantasmic viewing package.

Calafornia Grill is AMAZING. Disney's signature restaurants definitely do not disappoint. My personal favorite is Narcoossee's at the Grand Floridian - I have to go every trip. California Grill has possibly the best sushi I have ever had. And how can you beat that view of MK?! You are going to love it.

HOORAY FOR BOG!! So excited for you!! You will be blown away at the look of that place. For a restaurant that isn't a signature one, their food is seriously so good. My Aunt and Uncle have vowed that it is the best meal they've had at Disney (they got the braised pork btw). To put their statement in perspective, they've been going since the late 80s -- I've been going since '92, am 25 now and have about 50 trips under my belt -- so that's saying a lot about that BOG pork!! ::yes::

For some food fun before your trip check out Disney Food Blog! She posts reviews of restaurants, quick serve, snacks, CUPCAKES, where to find new things and more! You and daughter should have some fun perusing that site :)

Have an AWESOME time! Enjoy Epcot's Flower & Garden Festival! Check-out the food booths they have out around the countries too, so fun to snack your way around the world.

Don't forget to make your room request, and double check it's noted when you check-in!

Sending lots of pixie dust your way!! :goodvibes

I agree with all the posters. I would go ahead and rent the ECV. They will deliver it to the resort and you can charge it in your room, then return it to bell services at the end of your trip and company will come and get it. DO not underestimate the amount of time you will be walking. When the bus drops you off at the MK gate, you still have about a five minute walk...down a slope then back up a slope. There are LOTS of subtle inclines all over the resort and you will wear out quickly and that is no fun for anyone. If you do not need it then, great, but you will have it when you do. I have had several knee surgeries and it is a struggle sometimes, especially getting down into a ride and trying to manuever through tight spaces when you are in a hurry to exit. Like I explained to my FIL when he needed a scooter for our trip. It will allow YOU to be comfortable and independent and therefore you will have a better time. WDW is too much when you are mobility diabled.

Remember WDW is so large that for us to take the bus from AKV to MK is 20 minutes...without ever leaving the property.

I agree with everyone elso too. Most of all have fun and I hope you love it like I do.

Thanks once again for the advice, is it better to just hire the scooter on the day as it must be awkward getting on and off the buses?
We also have universal tickets, does anyone know if there's a bus from Disney that we can catch? Same question re discovery Cove, this is our once in a lifetime trip so we're doing it all :-)
Thanks so much to each.of you x

There isn't a bus or shuttle that will take you from your Disney hotel to Universal or anywhere else off Disney property. However you can take a cab! Just go to bell services outside of your hotel's lobby/check-in area and they will call one for you :)

Nope,,,, a cab is great option for from Disney to universal. Most Disney resorts have cabs on stand by.

https://www.undercovertourist.com/orlando/crowd-calendar/may-2015/#calendar

I would take a look at this calendar to see what day are best for what park. Its always nicer to go on a less then 5 crowd level day. don't pay attention to the closed info they just haven't post the actual times the parks are open yet for may. disneys normal site has times posted and should have extra magic hours posted.

Dinning can be done on the fly for table service places if your flexible. Just call dinning line 407-WDW-DINE from the parks an hour before you want to eat, to see what is available. (this works best if your a party of 4 or less) Or grab counter severs meal.

You have received a lot of great advice. I would like to add a few points about dining and cash for misc spending. We most often stay off site, but have done 3 vacations on site, so we took advantage of the QS dining plan. It was just me and my teen son. The first time, we would eat breakfast at the resort on dining plan; lunch in parks on dining plan; then grab a snack (our favorite is churros) before leaving for the evening. Many times, we wouldn't even get supper because we just weren't hungry. Often, we also threw away a lot of food from lunches because it was MORE than enough. The next two trips we tweaked our plan just a bit. We still each got a breakfast at the resort; we shared one meal for lunch; shared one meal for supper and got our snack, as always. This wasted no food and we were completely satisfied with the amount we each ate for each meal. It saved me a LOT of money as I never had to pay for food 'out of pocket'. Only exception to this is the occasional dole whip or other ice cream treat.

For TS, our favorites are 50's Prime Time (Hollywood) and Liberty Tree (MK). Each is themed (though not character dining) and the food is very good. The interaction with CMs at 50's Prime Time is priceless!

As for cash for misc purchases. I buy my son and myself a separate Disney Gift Card. Each of us is allowed to spend up to the money on the cards; once it's gone, it's gone and no more spending. Our vacations have averaged 12 days and I give him $200 and myself $300. We always come home with money still on the cards. We buy a new tshirt / sweatshirt; trading pins; souvenir coffee mugs/kitchen items; and my son is beginning to collect beer steins (very expensive). This method of budgeting has worked very well for us and it gives him the freedom to make his own decisions. I admit that I offered some guidance when he was much younger; but, by the time he was 11 or 12, he knew what he was doing and planned his purchases without being too hasty.

I know you will have a wonderful vacation!! As an earlier poster said...don't stress!! Just take these tidbits of information and make them what you can for you and your family.
