I don't really know you, so let me introduce myself. I'm Lisa and I was very acitve on this thread and then family circumstances made me not post much is the last # of months. My plan for this cruise is for just me and my 18 year old son (who is at VA Tech) to cruise together. My DD11 and DD13 will still be in school. Today, I become an exchange mother (Vanessa is over the Atlantic right now, just tracked her flight) to a young lady (Vanessa) from Oslo Norway who is 17. Her mom is very sad and I know exactly what she is going though as I sent Daniel to Tech last week. I am having a very hard time with Daniel gone. We have gotten very good on AIM and that has helped a lot!!

So your team is ????? How big a fan are you? Where do you live and what does your family consist of? If you don't want to answer....I certainly understand.

My name is Gydell. I can not imagine how horrid it must be like to go to the VT campus. I don't know if I could sleep so it must be very hard for students to live there daily. I wish your son and exchange student the best. All students should have a carefree life exp freshmen. We are big Auburn fans. We have not missed a game, at home or away, in at least 20 years. My DD went to Auburn but it wasn't too sad since we saw her every weekend. Our phone bill was out of sight since she is my best friend. She is married and has a son who is 6. They live down the street from me. They attended all the games until DGS started shool 2 years ago and felt like he should stay home on weekends. They still join us for a game here and there. We are 4 generations of Auburn grads so you can say we are pretty big fans. My DH knows nothing of this trip so it will be a big surprise for him. My DD and DGS will also be cruising with us. My DD and myself are lucky enough to not have to work so we have lots of time to travel and shop for this trip. Tell your son and Vanessa to enjoy their college days as they won't happen again! Maybe we will meet at a bowl game before the cruise or if you are ever down this way let's make sure and get together.

So I guess you'll be rooting for VA Tech to beat LSU!!

I went to Tech and graduated in 1979. Daniel and I were in Blacksburg the weekend before the shooting at what they call Hokie Focus for incoming freshman. We were in Norris Hall. Many on this board lived those days with me as we found out 2 of Daniel's friends were gone and then to find out that the shooter also went to Daniel's high school (although he was several years older than Daniel).

I spoke to Erin Peterson's mom several weeks after the shooting (she was one of Daniel's friends that was lost) and the most horrific thing she told me was the morgue was full of kids with all the cell phones ringing. All the parents and friends were calling every so often, so until the batteries ran out....the phones rang and rang.....can you just imagine??

Goose bumps just reading your post - I can't imagine.

No - I have to rout for LSU - they are an SEC team. Now Alabama is a different story!

We have always wanted to go to Club 33! What is the secret to getting in?

Karen

It is members only. There are 500 members and a waiting list of about 7 years to join. Costs a bundle to join and then around $4500 per year dues. A member can make reservations for a group that includes non-members and take them as guests. It is a very special moment if you can get an invite.

Saw a nice motorhome with a car in tow from Oregon as I went across the bridge this morning and thought of you! If you are planning a bay area trip, do let us know!

Karen

For sure. Once we get "on the road" and don't have to waste time working :rolleyes1 we hope to see lots of DISer friends. A glass of wine with you would be wonderful. We will put it on the list we have started.

:car: :boat: :moped: :wave2:

I'm down here in Phoenix--it's unGodly hot!
Calgon/CalMom take me away!! ;)

Today I went to the state capitol to look up old issues of my hometown paper and find pictures, articles, etc. to print out for my class reunion. It was really interesting. I was there 3 hours and only got half done (I wanted to review all the papers from my senior year--don't worry, it's only a weekly paper!) so I guess I'll try to find time to come back down and finish.

Tonight I got to go see John Edward with my sister. We didn't get a reading but it was very good, nonetheless. I'm going to take my nephew to see POC AWE pirate: tomorrow (yes, it's still playing in a few theaters down here!) and then I'm OUTTA HERE! Gotta get back home where it gets below 95 at night!
I've always wanted to go see John Edward! I used to watch his show ALL the time when it used to come on TV, but I haven't been able to find it for a few years. :sad2:

Holly, how were things when you went out and about last night? There were a few photos on the news when I was awake in the night.

I basically went straight down the road and back. Our destination was very close. I didn't see a speck of damage where I went. It sounds like everything occurred on the South side of our city, just about a mile away from me and further South. The festival and fireworks I was going to take Tyler to tonight might be cancelled though because it was to happen right near where all the bad stuff happened. So I'm going to try to find out whether it's cancelled.

Well that is better news for your locality.

Off soon for our fish and chips!!:)

Traditionally it is haddock in batter and chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a nice pot of tea!!! John has baked beans instead of the mushy peas though!

See you later.

do you watch Are You Being Served by chance?
As Jackie said, my mother got us hooked on that show - she just loved it, and I did too! Very funny. Do you watch Coupling? BBC? So funny!!!!
if no one's answered that's the Maximum Ride series by James "I write way too much" Patterson
Yep, that's it. Too funny "I write way too much"... :lmao: :rotfl:
My mom and I used to watch that years ago. Loved it.

Indeed - good memories eh sis?

Thanks, John. I thing Deception Point was my favorite of all four books ::yes:: Wish they'd make a movie of that one!

I had fish and chips for dinner! There' a fish & chips place right by my house now...they guy who owns it English and it was very good. I had haddock and it was moist and yummmy and the batter was great. The 'chips' were OK....a little 'fat' for me (I like skinny, crunchy fries). Will go back and try his chicken strips some time too and the Shepheard's Pie. I've always been leary of Bangers & Mash as I don't know what kind of (texture) sausage it is (hate mushy sausages).

.....hitting the hay for tonight.

From Steak to Fish & Chips - talk about flexible!!! :rotfl: :lmao:
REMEMBER...next several of us are on line at the same time we CAN go to the DISboards chat room and talk in real time :thumbsup2
I loved the live chats - from our Double Dip - you get a great sense of the banter, so much fun!

I ADORE him - is he as cute in person? He's amazing... btw you never told us about the other reading when we were in DL... we had SO much to talk about. I think we might need an agenda (kidding) so we don't miss anything. You have several trips to tell us about too!

Are we going to set a date for our next AZ DIS MEET?:cloud9: :dance3: :yay:

Totally agree!

I never leave home without a book. You never know when you might get stuck somewhere so it's best to be prepared. (My co-workers tease me about this.)

I was shocked last year when I went for jury duty probably half the people i the room just sat there - no books, magazines, suduko, nothing! I even brought a back-up book in case I finished the first one.
you are my kind of person! I'm the same way, always have a book with me....I was watching something on the news last week, and they said the average american only read 7 books last year:scared1: a ballpark figure for how many books I've read in the last year-well over 100...course it doesn't hurt that I work in a bookstore

Sounds like a deal to me! We pay 12500 for our 1st 5 tixs and then 7000 for our next 10. Thats why I can't afford a balcony!

 Oh my goodness! That's outrageous!

Well I am taking a 5!

John is closing tonight so he was home this morning, we both got up around 7 went in the hot tub and pool until the girls woke up then they swam for a bit and then we had breakfast poolside! I am on my fourth load of laundry, cleaned out the fridge, boxed up three boxes of magazines to take to the break room at work and two bags of play clothes for the girls school! I am tired!

No John, I quit going to chat too...I never could get a word in!

I got rid of some of the girls toys as well....we need to clear the junk out!
It's gorgeous and hot out. I am hoping it stays that way all week. Holly, I saw pictures on the news this am - my word, those storms did some damage! Hope everyone made it through safely/.

When I went it was for a charity event. It was a breakfast and I think there were only 200 tickets sold for the two days they did it. Don't remember the details of how my friend found out about it, but she grabbed the tickets fast! It was a wonderful meal and a great experience.

Wow! You've had a busy day already! I just can't get motivated. Slept in until Tyler's dad called me at 10 this morning. Talked to him a bit, talked to Tyler a couple seconds, then my dad called. I should be doing laundry, should be cleaning. I promised myself I'd use this time between semesters to do a really good cleaning, including eliminating a bunch of clutter (primarily the tons of extra toys Tyler has and doesn't need because our house is too small). Instead, I finished watching a movie, and want to take a nap now. LOL! Just can't get motivated. Will probably go have lunch first...I have a coupon for $5 off a meal at one of my favorite places (McAlister's Deli).

So far it sounds like only minor injuries.

I always have a book with me in my purse. I read at least one book per day if not more. When I am at Lake Almanor, sometimes I will read as many as 6 in a day.

If I worked in a bookstore I'd have no money!! Luckily my mom and sister are both big readers too and we mostly share the same taste (except they will have nothing to do with my Stephen King books!) so we ship boxes of books back and forth (media mail is the way to go!).

Do you have a favorite type of book? I typically read cozy mysteries or Stephen King stuff (basically someone dies in every book I read and not from natural causes).

Is McAlister's a chain? My sister has one by her that has the best baked potatoes! I always thought it was local restaurant (she is in Wilmington, NC)
