Oh my gosh! I just said the same thing about Princess Bride!!

Then I thought of a few others, like Willow, Cocoon, and Dirty Dancing!!

We also love all the Star Trek fliks and own all of them as well!

Another "recent older movie" is Galaxy Quest!

Karen

Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies, although neither DH nor DD (8) like it so I only get to watch it when I am travelling or by myself :sad2:

All afternoon, kids who are scheduled to go to Tech in the fall have been asking the same questions as they have come into and out of my house. As a deep rooted Christian, I have answered these questions the same way I would answer any question on death. I am living this life so one day I can have the hope of going to my real home. When it is my turn to go home, I will go joyfully, no matter what the circumstances, no matter who I leave behind.

You can not live your life in fear. You need to serve and have faith.

I will be sorry for the families left behind, they really need our prayers.

We have heard that Reema Samaha has passed away. Again, nothing is final. Only info from her friends.

Nicely said Lisa. No one should live in fear....we should learn (somehow) from situations like this and move forward with even more strength.

So sorry to hear the Reema has passed, my thoughts are with her family and friends at this horrible time.

One of our favorites - Stand By Me

Best from the 70's - Animal House (only because it was filmed at the University of Oregon)

Two of Shawn's favorites (tongue in cheek, because he appeared as an extra while in high school) - Peggy Sue Got Married and Howard the Duck!

I am just honestly so numb from reading all of this.

Amy and I went up to Cleveland tonight to the Apple store there, after three years the hard drive finally failed in our old Powerbook, and I made a trip to the genius bar to get it confirmed, and sent off for repair.

On the way up we were talking about the events of today, and how we all want to know more details so that we can try to understand why this happened. The sad truth is that even when we get these details, we will all still wonder why this could happen.

For many parents, the thing that we all fear the most has happened to their children. It will take great faith, and lots of love and prayer to make it through such senseless tragedy. Whether they know it or not Lisa, your friends and the families in Virginia have the prayers of parents around the country hoping to give them strength to pull through.

Tomorrow night we are attending an honors ceremony at our son's college. He is being inducted into the equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa at his University. I am sure that the young people there will all be in a somber mood, as they will be at colleges and Universities around the country.

John, I agree. I kept wondering why as if that would make it seem better, but really, it might make it even harder to grasp.

Congratulations on your son's induction! What a great honor...and hopefully the tragedy will not overshadow the pride that he should feel for being inducted. You must be proud.

I want to thank you all for letting me go on and on tonight. I have been glued to the TV all day. I am not sure what to do with all these emotions.

Thanks for letting me talk though them....I am tired so I hope I will sleep.

Wanted to share a funny story that may take thoughts away from today's events just for a moment and maybe put a smile on someone's face. We thought it was very clever and funny.

Our friends had been watching over our daughter's kittens and our home while we were on vacation for Spring Break. Some may have heard the story of Gnomes and having their pictures taken all around the world. Travelocity ads come to mind. Someone may have sent us a Gnome a few years back as a joke, but it does sit near our front porch. When we arrived home from our trip, we saw a note on our front door. Inside an envelope was a piece of paper with letters cut out of magazines that formed the sentence "We have your Gnome, ransom to follow"! It was late, we laughed, and didn't think anymore about it. EARLY the next morning, the doorbell rings, we open the door and our little Gnome is sitting there with an envelope attached around its neck. Inside were a bunch of photo's:

We thought it was hilarious, there are quite a few more, but you get the idea.

Okay, sounds like two Westfield girls were shot. I just got this e-mail. Please pray for these two families

Reema's Samaha parents are down there now. They have been unable to get her on her cell phone - she was in the classroom where the shooting took place. Another WHS student, a basketball player, Erin Peterson, I think, was shot in the head. Don't know her current condition.

Reema was in Beirut during the bombing this past summer and we were trying to get them safe passage to my Mom's house in Cyprus - luckily the marines got them out - pray she is okay this time too.

Prayers coming their/your way...this is just awful. These kids were just starting their lives!

John-what a wonderful honor for your son. You and Amy must be so proud of him!! It's a wonderful accomplishment. Perhaps the days events, somber as they may be, will help him to appreciate his accomplishment and all that he has even more than he already (I'm sure) does!

Seems like your gnome was having all kinds of fun while you were gone. That is very funny!!!

I love Galaxy Quest. It is very silly, but so funny.

Julie:

We actually had a code blue (a step below red) lock down at school a few weeks ago. I was driving to school a bit earlier than usual and watched with a sense of numbness a row of police cars (3) with shot guns pointed towards a laudramat that is located 3 blocks from school (same street) I noticed more cars (4-5) coming to the area (from the direct of school). I thought for a moment it was all like a tv show, but realized as I walked into the office and asked them if they had notice of this, that it was real life. They said nope, and called for a lockdown. Seems we have a bit of gang activity right down the street from our school and lately it's been rather dicey. But the police are supposed to call the school if this is ever the case. Had we not locked down many children would have walked right into that area. This is the 2nd one this year. The first time their was a "threat" of a parent with a gun in the parking lot. Fortuanely, it was a lying parent who was in a custody dispute and trying to make her ex into a trouble maker. But it was ridicolous. We had 10-15 policemen on campus during this time, what a was a resources. The only good thing I can say is that both of these times I happen to be at school. In the school. I'm always afraid of being trapped outside with my kids on the inside. My worst fear....because I can't bring myself to think beyond that, as it just can't happen in my world.

May the Lord be with the parents and families of those who are lost today.

I don't think I have heard of a 'lock down' over here, though I imagine there has been as odd occasion. We have actually had school shootings and a horrible axe attack at a nursery, but fortunately as yet nothing like this! It must be so frightening.

All afternoon, kids who are scheduled to go to Tech in the fall have been asking the same questions as they have come into and out of my house. As a deep rooted Christian, I have answered these questions the same way I would answer any question on death. I am living this life so one day I can have the hope of going to my real home. Very nicely put Lisa. How sad about Reema. A parent's worst nightmare.:sad1:

I think when you look down, it's painted in the streets "Look Right". However, this was in the late 80s, so it might not be like that anymore. Pretty funny though!

Ah yes, we do have that painted in the roads at busy crossings sometimes. It does help.

I want to thank you all for letting me go on and on tonight. I have been glued to the TV all day. I am not sure what to do with all these emotions.

Good morning Marilyn,

The DIS went down just as I was getting caught up!

Hope you are having a lovely morning!

Very funny... but a thought does come to mind...

Too much time on their hands perhaps?

Morning everyone (who's up anyway!);)

I've just been catching up again with all the awful news from yesterday and am still in shock. Those poor kids and all their friends and families......having seen how it affects so many people around when just one child is killed (my friend's dd in January) I can only imagine how this will have such a ripple effect on whole communities. My prayers are with everybody concerned. I did indeed hug my daughter tight last night.

Another friend just stopped by my house and her son's has a friend whose girlfriend was killed.

It is so scary for anyone of us having kids in college anywhere that something like this can happen!!

Noel, my thoughts exactly.

The inside scoop from the kids on the campus is this a girlfriend/boyfriend issue. Lots of my sons friends have been IMing and posting on Facebook.

He was looking for a girl went to her dorm didn't get her and then hid until he knew her first class was in Norris...which meant she was an Engineering student.

The VT President is on TV giving a news conference now. I talked with this guy on Sat.....just so hard to believe......

My DD called from San Diego this afternoon. Many of her friends are shocked and frightened about the shootings. I think for people her age it is a wakeup call that you need to pay attention to those around you for signs of mental instability or unhealthy relationships.

It is just so hard for her to fathom someone in such a rage that they felt the taking of so many lives was justified. What answer can I give her?

such a terribly sad story Lisa

Lisa, thank you for those words about not living your life in fear, that is so true.

The Virgina story brings home to all of us with children what a dangerous world we live in and how even places to most of us seem safe can suddenly become dangerous.

I talk to my daughter about relationships. I assume the rest of you have all done the same. All we can do is by example and by conversation help our children through this terrible time.

I want to thank you all for letting me go on and on tonight. I have been glued to the TV all day. I am not sure what to do with all these emotions.

Thanks for letting me talk though them....I am tired so I hope I will sleep.
