Max Park Capacity - Christmas Weekend

so many great responses and tips here - thank you all so much!

I'm hearing a lot about the lockers - And may try to take advantage of this. So here is my question - I don't want it to interrupt early morning touring right out of the gate. How do you pay for the locker? What are the logistics around it and how big are the lockers?

thanks

You just go to the locker area (I know there's one in Main Street, which I found very convenient) and find the area of lockers you want. I think they just have Small and Large? Most are Small, at least. You just touch the screen in the area you want and navigate through. You can pay with cash or credit--I don't know how cash works, but it says you can get change. Using a credit card is nice and quick.

Once you've paid, you'll get a receipt with your code (don't lose it!) and the light on one of the nearby lockers will blink and the screen will tell you what locker you've been assigned (you can't control where it is). Just put your stuff in, close the door (make sure everything's in so it doesn't jam!) and then press the button to lock it, and you're good to go.

I always photographed the receipt, just in case we lost it.

To unlock, just go to the same station you checked out from and tell it to unlock your locker. Enter the code and it'll flash again.

A "small" locker ($7) held 2 coats (one trenchcoat and a coat closer to a pea coat) and a sweatshirt. They were just balled in there and the fit was a touch tight, but not too bad. I reckon there's a good chance we could have squeezed another coat in there if we had folded our clothes instead, and definitely if one had not been a trenchcoat.

The $10 locker easily fit an 18" American Girl doll, a balled up sweatshirt, and I think a couple coats, with room to spare. Not certain about what all we put in there, but that's really a good-sized locker.

The price is kind of steep, but you do get unlimited in-out privileges with your code.

Are there lockers outside the park?

What we did was, wear our warm clothes in the early morning (it was always cool enough for that), and then around 10 or 11, when it started getting warm, we circled back to Main Street to get a locker.

Another option would be to send a Fastpass runner to Space Mountain for a Fastpass while someone else goes to the locker, and meet at Indy. (If you're doing Fantasyland first, you can likely carry your stuff until you're done with the dark rides, at least.)

This is not true. The Park can reach a level of capacity where they do not allow anyone at all to enter. It is the last level of closure and very rarely happens (like on NYE), but it can happen.

Oh wow!!! Sorry for the wrong information, I did not know about this. We went over Christmas for 5 days in 2004/2005 and 3 of the 5 days were at full capacity by about 11:30 but we were allowed to go back into the park throughout the day as long as we got stamped which we did do. So if you pay 90.00 for a ticket and want to leave the park to have lunch at Goofy's Kitchen they won't let you back in on those types of days? That would be a huge bummer. Does anyone know how many times this has ever happened?

There are 3 levels of "capacity" as it was explained to me.

At the first, they do not sell anymore tickets. If you have a multi-day pass, AP, or have entered the Parks and have a handdstamp, you can enter.

2nd - I do not know what / who they llmit.

3rd - Absolutely no one enters until the Fire Marshall determines enough people have left the Park.

So, to answer your question, there IS a scenario in which, yes, you could pay $90, go to Goofy's Kitchen and get locked out. Although that would have to be a VERY crowded day.

Eeee-va, thanks for that detailed description - Very helpful!!! Sounds like it's a pretty efficient system. 3 days until we leave. I still feel like I need 3 months after reading the tips on these boards :)

When I was at DL Christmas 07' I left DL to walk over to DCA for fastpasses, when I returned to DL they said the park was closed due to capacity - but they let me back in.

I assumed this was because I had already been in and was not just arriving, but it sounds like my assumption was incorrect. Does anyone know why they let me back in if the park was closed due to capacity?

I guess in the future I should read the entire thread before posting. It seems that you have answered my question Disney Dreams, thanks.

This will be our 3rd visit to DL over Christmas. Both trips it has been closed due to max people. We have always left in the afternoon and went back at dinnertime or just after and always gotten back in!

I sure hope that's the case this year. DBF made a PS for Napa Rose for Christmas Dinner and I would be very disappointed if DLR reaches capacity and they won't let us back in afterward :scared1:

Just checked into hotel and have heard that DL reached max capacity today but DCA remained open - We definitely will be taking afternoon breaks so I'll let everyone know how it goes.

And yes, of course, here I sit in shorts and a jacket by the pool in the evening :) (it's a bit chilly)

We're off to Universal tomorrow.

Yes DL was "full" tonight- signs all up and down harbor. Not sure if they were letting handstamps in or not- we didn't even try- too tired and I didn't want to go anywhere near there when it's that crowded!

Ahhh! :scared1: I'm now scared of crowds tomorrow. I didn't think it would be that bad because both of the So. Cal APs are blocked out. Hopefully, it won't close due to capacity. Hopefully Tuesday is less crowded... :sad2::sad2:

It has been busy since we arrived Friday. Always need a handstamp, but have never had a problem getting in mid day.

DL even reached capacity this past Saturday - the pre-Christmas weekend - and it was not as busy on the same exact weekend in 2008 or 2007. It was wall-to-wall people everywhere we went in DL (DCA, not so much). So I have a hunch that it is just going to be a madhouse between now and January 4th. I don't know if the huge crowds are solely due to all the Annual Passholders or if there are just more people coming to DL in general than before, but it was crazy.

On the one hand, I can see where the coming changes and additions to DCA could help this problem because it should draw more people out of DL and over into DCA, and thin things out a bit in DL. On the other hand, it could also work the other way where it just draws mobs of people into DCA but also brings even MORE mobs of people to DL on a more regular basis and the crowds just become unbearable in both places. I am hoping for the best!

I have read several posts here at The DIS, as well as other sites, that many people plan a DL trip once the DCA construction work is complete, my family and I are planning a 2012 trip too. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
:goodvibes

Interesting tidbit from tonight - was exchanging my CityPasses for 3-day Park Hoppers and the ticket cast member specifically told me that they expect 'massive crowds' between now and New Years - and that once you leave the park you may not be able to get back in... to always check with the cast member stamping hands to verify - but no guarantees - this was without any prompting or questions on my part.

Planning on arriving at 6am 'ish' for a 7am magic morning tomorrow so we'll see how it goes.

But that is exactly why those passes are blocked out. Disneyland will be so busy, those AP holders are not allowed in. When they are allowed in, it is because without them, the crowds are not too bad.
