Given this response, I suppose you think that liberal talking heads and shock jocks have only a positive effect on society with their trash? It's all a matter of perspective. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Seriously, does anyone here really WATCH that show? Sure - channel surf over it occasionally, but actually sit down and watch it?! Go figure -- but ratings and full studio audiences don't lie. Look at Jerry Springer, too -- it's like two peas in a pod. One may wonder why people want to be guests on these shows. I often wonder why people want to be in the audience! Do you really want your friends, family and neighbors to know you willingly participate in this trash?

While I haven't sat in the recliner and watched a whole show, I do put it on the computer tv while I'm folding laundry, sometimes.
I was surprised that the View had him on not that long ago. They talked about his paternity test result shows with him. I fully expected one of them to compare him to Jerry springer, but they didn't.

Maury and Dr. Phil are the same show. They exploit people willing to disclose private information for a trip to the city and 15 minutes of fame for ratings and money. Same classless plots.

At least Maury doesn't have the same plastic surgeon as Dr. Phil and his wife, the clown couple. They just look creepy and expressionless, with all that botox. Now that's scary.

I would disagree. Unlike Maury and Jerry who serve no useful or remotely legitimate purpose in broadcasting, the talking heads and possibly even the shock jocks (gasp!) do serve a purpose. (We can argue until the end of this millenninum about usefulness and legitimacy and probably get nowhere. ) The purpose they serve is to stimulate discussion/debate in the public's mind; to question the talking points of the other side; to provide to a greater or lesser degree some level of accountability that is sorely lacking in too many levels of government.

OTOH, Maury (and Jerry) appeal to only the basest of emotions and desires. These shows serve no useful purpose, stimulate no reasoned debate and they have no accountability. They exist only to debase people for the enjoyment of a studio and TV audience. Hmm... didn't the Romans do something similar just before the Empire crumbled?

I have a confession I have to admit, I watch it sometimes. It his hilarious! These women are on the show for the 16th time and they still haven't found the daddy! I mean come on, you can only get pregnant for a few days a month, how many men can you possibly go through in a few days? They can't be for real.

There was one where the baby's name was Mylove. The baby was her new love, so she named him Mylove. And the one where the woman was white and she was doing the paternity testing with a white man but the baby was african american? Classic!

It is trashy, but when there isn't anything on tv, it is good for a laugh.

Some of these shows really sink to a low level but hey, whatever floats your boat I guess. As for me, I'm grateful for Ellen and Montel if I want a daytime talk show. Oprah is cool but a bit too spacey for me.

Actually, Jerry Springer is well versed in politics and has his own political radio talk show. He was mayor of Cincinnati about 30 years ago, then the top rated news caster in the Cincinnati area. His tv show is smut, but he makes a lot of sense politically for the middle class. Unfortunately, sex has always been his downfall.

As for talk shows debasing folks for entertainment, I agree, as you can see from my comments on Dr. Phil and Maury.

As for most "talk radio" and "talk shows on tv" the problem is that people confuse opinions of these blather heads with fact. We should all research the facts ourselves, form our own opinions, and then listen to Rush dodo head or whomever, instead of letting them form our opinions right off the bat. They rely upon the fact that most of America is too lazy to do that.

Um...I watch the show. I actually sit down and watch it. My best friend and I get a kick out of it.

Oh....and I'm a lawyer, so I did manage to get myself some sort of edumacation.

While I don't endorse these types of shows, it is not Maury that is ruining these people's lives. They are ruining them themselves. He is just capitolizing on their mistakes on THEIR request. These women are calling and asking to be on the show and air their dirty secrets. There are much more private ways to obtain the same information.

It DEFINATELY takes two to tango. I do wonder however, if there wasn't this forum and if Maury and his ilk weren't so quick to capitalize on the situation, if these people would more quietly live thier lives and behave like parents instead of jumping to their 15 minutes of fame and ruining any semblance of family that these babies might have had. Forgive the run on sentence.

I hate that show. I watch the news from 7 - 9 am on channel 5 and then change it to channel 7 for Regis & Kelly. If I am busy and forget, the Maury show starts and I immediately rush to the TV to change it. I cannot watch even a few minutes. Some favorite commercials at that time are for Bryman College and Larry H Parker. Thank goodness I recently went back to work!

There has been such an increase in airing television shows that are clearly unfit for viewing that I have really cut back on my tv watching. When did cussing and using vulgar language become acceptable on TV? I don't know how the Maury Provich, Jerry Springer, Howard Sterns, in the world find fulfillment in their work. I guess it's only about the $$$. How sad that these shows stay on and continue to bring revenue in.

You should have seen Monday. They brought back people who were there before to test MORE people....some were there testing man #9!! .....................
What I don't get it this: When your wife brings you to the show to tell you your kid might not be yours and it turns out it is yours, your wife still CHEATED! They cry and hug and say everything is great now. No, it isn't. Your wife still cheated. I don't get it, but I watch Maury every time I'm home and I've been missing a lot of work and watchin' a lot of Maury.

I don't get either of those situations.
I have not seen many of those shows, but one of them explained why she was there for test number 9 or 10 - she obviously had not paid attention in biology class because she was sure that man number 10 was the dad (and she was so sure because she had been with him for the first time 6 months before her full term baby was born)!
