Mattress negotiating

I think we've picked the mattress for us. Any tips on the negotiation process for this particular purchase? How much should we expect to bring the price down?

Make sure Mrs. goes alone to buy it. I went to select a few that I liked...wife couldn't go at the same time. I was quoted the sticker price. She then went the next day to pick one of my options. She talked to the same guy and without asking for a lower price, got $150 off. Beyond that useless piece of advice, I've got nothing for you. Good luck.

There is no set amount, it depends on how much they have them marked up. We bought a king mattress set a few years ago and were only able to negotiate a free protective pad and free delivery. Of course, the price was half of what similar matresses were at places like Matress Warehouse where you can negotiate 40-50% off of some merchandise.

They are always negotiable, but it can vary by store. I purchased a mattress a few years ago and it was on sale already but I talked them down another $300 (box spring included and free delivery/old mattress removal).

Sometimes all they will do for you is give you free memory foam pillows or mattress pad, etc...so you have to be prepared to accept any "extra discount" or be ready to walk out the door.

Have you considered getting a memory foam mattress from ebay? They ship it rolled up in a box that is about 4ft (L) x 2ft. You use your old box (bottom part) and put the memory on top. Just do not cut open the bag until it is where you want it to be because it will expand 10million percent... We got one (queen - 10in thick) for my brother was some place in the $400 range and it is quite comfortable. They don't have to be expensive because all it is are layers of foam glued together.

We tried purchasing a foam mattress from Costco but it never expanded the way it was supposed to and the odor was horrible. Fortunately Costco will let you take back almost anything so we weren't out anything but after that we would be hesitant to purchase anything like that from ebay.

We've done a lot of research and are sure of the mattress we want, just not sure which of 5 levels of firmness. I lean toward the firmest one because I read once that you can always buy a pad to make a firm one softer, but you can't make a soft mattress harder! And the firmest one is cheapest. There's a local place that lets you exchange for 90 days, but overstock.com has them too so we're going to see how close the local store will get to overstocks.

I'd lowball them and then negotiate up from there (unless they take your lowball offer, in which case good for you!). If they don't give you what you're looking for, be prepared to walk away. If you walk away and they don't stop you, likely they gave you their true best price and you can either go back later or get it someplace else if a better deal can be found. Odds are they'll stop you before you hit the door and say "well now wait a minute, let me call the boss and let's see what we can do".

I had no idea negotiation was expected on mattress purchases. My father worked for a mattress factory so we always got them from him up until I moved far away. I've only purchased one mattress and that was from Macy's. Was I supposed to negotiate? Or is that only for the dedicated mattress stores?
