OK..so something I have really been struggling with during my training. I mostly run in the morning (5am) and it seems that my body wants to sit down and read a newspaper for a little bit, right in the middle of my runs.

Does anyone deal with similar issues? Anyone with ideas about how to avoid this? Luckily I run on the treadmill most mornings but it is still annoying.

This is not an uncommon problem, and here are two suggestions for dealing with it. One, get up earlier so you have time to go before you start your run. Two, change your diet and what you're eating the day before your run. If you visit the Runner's World web site and search for "runners runs," you'll find a lot more information and helpful suggestions.

Um...you could try to 'read the paper' before you start your run. For some, a cup of coffee helps with this.
Or, I have known people who go do a short warm-up run of about 10-15 min, and then 'read the paper' before the main part of their run. :goodvibes

I've had to change what I eat before running otherwise I find my stomach gets upset pretty easily. I also wait for about 30 minutes after eating before going out to run so that everything has a chance to digest. But also like Betsy suggested, you could try taking care of business before heading out. Good luck :)

Awesome. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Glad to hear it's not just me.

anything over about 5 miles for me. I take one Imodium tablet before a long run

There is a third option that is not discussed very much. There are always trees and woods. It takes a bit getting use to, but once you do it sure does make life a lot easier.

I was stunned at how many times I saw this happening at the Princess Half in Feb.

Thankfully, it's never been a problem for me in any of my halfs or 10ks. I hate port-a-potties too, so I always make a point of getting up early enough to "read the paper" at home or at my hotel prior hitting the race venue.

You paper readers are fortunate. War and Peace isn't long enough for me sometimes. :rotfl:

Seriously, if getting up earlier or catching up with the news or taking a quick short run or a diet change can't get the job done, there are other ways to solving the situation. I have read more than a few times how some professionals revert to the final solution.
