My family and I will be visiting the Disneyland Resort from August 28th-30th and this will be our first trip in a LONG time. I have always wanted to ride the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction in DL, but while looking around on the website, I noticed that it will be closing August 28th for rehabs! :sad2:

My question is why do you think these rehabs are happening. Also, are these rehab dates usually set in stone, and if so, is the Matterhorn a good ride? Good enough to get there a day earlier to ride it?

Thanks

It is one of the must-do's on our list. A refurb could be just for repainting paint, replacing tracks, adding more effects it could be for almost anything.

They start dates is usually pretty firm. But, can change. Often the completion date can change either direction depending on how things go.

Its a good ride, but its really in need of some work. Its not as smooth as it could be. Part of what makes it so neat is the history of it and what it represents in the coaster world. I would be more upset if Indy, Space Mt. or Jungle cruise were closed during a visit.

I saw that - it'll be closed when we're there too
From what I remember of it ~ it's a cool ride because it's such a classic Disney attraction, but IMHO, it won't make or break your vacation :goodvibes

From what we've experienced their start dates have been right on, but we've seen the opening dates change sometimes. Usually longer then what they figured. Which is why I planned our trip a few weeks after the Pirates opening. As that makes and breaks our trip, my favorite ride! :)

My son and DH love the Matterhorn, they go on it at least 2-3 times a trip! But it wouldn't make or break us going either.

So I would decide how badly you want to go on the ride and decide from there. As much as I hate it when a ride is down, I understand why they need to do those refurbs though, look at how long they run day in and day out!

Luckly for me.. I will get to ride it :) YES! I leave for back home the day before it goes down! YEAH!

Agreed. Matterhorn is sort of old and rickety....really needs the work. I love it, of course, but when we rode it last month it was even more bumpy and rough than usual. I hope the refurb smooths things out a little. (And boo, Indy WAS down on our last visit and we were bummed. Hope it's up when we go back tomorrow.)

Ok the two different sides.. The left side I believe is more of a thrill. I do not remember exactly which side had more of a thrill but one of them did.

As you are looking to the entrance of the ride it's the left side that has more of the thrill. So you are right. But if you have time, check out both sides and decide for yourself.

Oh, and as many times Matterhorn has been under refurbishment, I still haven't notice anything smoother. I would think they would have to change the whole track. It may be down for other things they want to check out.

Sorry you'll miss out but like someone said, try to have fun there on the other rides up and running. :sunny:

Yeah, same here. I think it's just an old bumpy ride, but it seems to get bumpier by the year. I don't really think a refurb is going to help, but it's a nice wish. :sunny:

OH NO. I'm a first time Disneyland visitor and I've already switched my trip once because it conflicted with the Pirates rehab. Now the Matterhorn, Steam Train and Haunted Mansion will be closed for my vacation. I knew there was a chance the HM would be close for the Holiday rehab but had hoped the other major attractions wouldn't go down until that was over. UGH.

I know what you mean. We were considering maybe planning a quick trip in the late fall. But it seems like after the 50th is over they are going to be working on quite a few rides, so just may have to stick to going again next year after next weeks trip.

The Matterhorn was down most of last fall for a major rehab. I find it unlikely that it will be down for something major again. Worst case is it's down for the monorail and Sub lagoon rehabs.

People say that the left side is a little more thrilling, but as a vetran of both, I don't think that's really true. The only different is that where the two run parallel, the left usually has the inside tighter turns.

The last time Matterhorn went down for rehab was fall of 2004. It never went down in 2005. So it really does need it as it usually goes down every year.

iceskatejen is correct, the Matterhorn usually goes down every year at that same time. It skipped a year so it definitely needs it. It's nothing crazy, just routine yearly maintenance. It just happens that it usually ends up being the whole month of September.

It is my favorite ride, but I too am going in September regardless of it being down. But if I didn't get to go as often as I do, I am a weird one that would change my trip for that ride. I think it just seems bumpier year by year because I'm getting older!!

Either way you will have a great trip.

Andrea

I waited 4 years to catch the Matterhorn. I went Oct. 2001, Nov. 2002, Jan. 2003, Oct. 2004, and finally go to go on it in Jan. of 2006. I guess I just missed it every trip. My DSS was sad this last trip because HM was closed. I said "but we have the Matterhorn!!" My theroy is that you will always miss something because of refurb. schedule. It just means you have to plan another trip! ;)

Hmmm, Maybe I mentally skipped a year. I have this vivid vivid image of all the track pulled out and tarps up all over the mountain. I could have sworn it was last fall. They also reworked the entrance area. It could have been two years ago though. In either case, the refurb was extensive and it was down for a couple months. The entire track was pulled out and redone. I think they also installed the fireworks stuff and tinkerbelle stuff.

Shoot, that means it must have been 2004. My bad.
