DD16 had this question in math yesterday.

You need to make a word that will equal 100. A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 etc. You can only use one letter once.

Can anyone figure this out. I feel like an idiot.

Each letter has a value and you have to make a word where the value = 100

Example the word ACE = 9
A 1
B 2
C 3
D 4
E 5

ACE = A+C+E
135 = 1+3+5 = 9

--- Not sure if you're asking for an explanation of the problem or if you're asking for the answer to the problem

My DS9 had that exact question a few weeks ago. We spent I'm not sure how long trying to help him come up with a word that equaled out to 100. Finally got it without repeating any letters. We weren't sure if the teacher was looking for anything specific but I'm pretty sure he got it right so maybe not.

(3^2 + 1)all raised to the power of the square root of 4

Not sure how you could write that in a "word" though.

ETA: Oh, thought you could only use those 4 numbers.

Wow, I can't even think of a formula or anything to help figure that out. All I can see is just trial and error. It seems like using letters near the end of the alphabet would make it easier, but getting them to add up to exactly 100 is a challenge.

I think you're looking for a "dollar word".

You can find a couple examples, along with a handy automated checker, here...

http://www.balmoralsoftware.com/dollar.htm

They're fun to play with!

A couple of useful rules from the site I linked:

Adding ed to a verb increases its value by 9 and reduces the target value for the root verb to 91.
Adding s to a word increases its value by 19 and reduces the target value for the root word to 81.
Adding ing to a verb increases its value by 30 and reduces the target value for the root verb to 70.

I haven't figured it out, yet--but my first hint is to find your vowels values, factor 100 and then crack the code from there. ( I have a game where you are given a set up numbers and must figure out how to make it add up to one number the same number, for any sets of numbers they provide. You can add, subtract, multiply, or divide.)

For example
A=1
E=5
I=I
O =15
U=21
and sometimes
Y=25

Factors of 100
50*2
25*2*2
5*5*2*2

then go from there....

Fun game. I hope it isn't one of those dumb homework assignments that have no answer.

Yeah, I figured that "ly" was 37 points. I haven't had any luck finding a 63 point combination to attach it to -lol.

softly - 97
quickly - 98

I'm off to try some words ending in "ing" now.

I came up with two words, but the easiest one I found by starting with:

R = 18
S = 19
T = 20
U = 21
V = 22

Total: 100

I then started replacing one of those letters with two letters of equal value (i.e., V = 22 = 10 + 12 = J and L; then try to find a word with RSTUJL; obviously this wasn't the combination, though!).

Hint: try to include another vowel :)

The word we got to equal 100 is whistled. 23+8+9+12+19+20+5+4=100

There was another question where DS9 had to find the shortest word that he could to equal a particular amount. Don't remember what it was though.
