Masks now required by CDC on ships?

I just saw, on facebook, that the WHO director said masks were not needed now. Only needed if you have cold symptoms or feel sick. He also said that infections are related to mask use.
So, who knows what to believe???
I don't think our country will ease the mask compliance on close quarters on ships, but you never know. I do think the easing of restrictions is coming sometime this year, FWIW. I tried to find the post with the director stating this, but I couldn't find it from a couple of days ago. You can google WHO and mask requirements to see if it is legit.

As it pertains to eventual cruising, is this really any different than the mask requirements in the Conditional Sail Order? If anything, it puts all modes of transport on the same CDC playing field.

Never trust anything you see on Facebook.

There are way too many fake news that are shared on social media and the platforms have a hard time getting this problem under control.

Always look for a reliable source. If you want to know what the WHO recommends, go to the WHO website.

This claim going around social media is (yet again) dangerous misinformation. The WHO director did NOT say that masks aren't needed. Here's a good source on the origins of that false claim and information from the WHO. Please, please, please do not draw your information from social media sites anymore, regardless of the political leaning, and double check any statements that don't pass the sniff-test.

And yet now there is the debate in the past week over whether you should be wearing TWO masks at a time, not one. But you're right, who knows what to believe.

Here is the CDC webpage with info about their new order:

Requirement for Face Masks on Public Transportation Conveyances and at Transportation Hubs
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/face-masks-public-transportation.html
The order itself: https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/masks/mask-travel-guidance.html and https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/pdf/Mask-Order-CDC_GMTF_01-29-21-p.pdf

Quote from the second link:

This Order must be followed by all passengers on public conveyances (e.g., airplanes, ships, ferries, trains, subways, buses, taxis, ride-shares) traveling into, within, or out of the United States as well as conveyance operators (e.g., crew, drivers, conductors, and other workers involved in the operation of conveyances) and operators of transportation hubs ( e.g., airports, bus or ferry terminals, train or subway stations, seaports, ports of entry) or any other area that provides transportation in the United States.

People must wear masks that cover both the mouth and nose when awaiting, boarding, traveling on, or disembarking public conveyances. People must also wear masks when entering or on the premises of a transportation hub in the United States.

ANd following the rabbit trail of definitions...

From the Order...

(1) Persons1 must wear2 masks over the mouth and nose when traveling on conveyances into and within the United States. Persons must also wear masks at transportation hubs as defined in this Order.

(2) A conveyance operator transporting persons into and within the United States3 must require all persons onboard to wear masks for the duration of travel.

<footnote 3 This includes international, interstate, or intrastate waterways, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.>

(3) A conveyance operators operating a conveyance arriving at or departing from a U.S. port of entry must require all persons on board to wear masks for the duration of travel as a condition of controlled free pratique.4

<footnote 4 As a condition of this controlled free pratique to commence or continue operations in the United States, convey-ance operators must additionally require all persons to wear masks on board conveyances departing from the United States and for the duration of their travel until the conveyance arrives at the foreign destination if at any time any of the persons on the conveyance (passengers, crew, or conveyance operators) will return to the United States while this Order remains in effect. This precaution must be followed regardless of scheduled itinerary. >

(4) Conveyance operators must use best efforts to ensure that any person on the conveyance wears a mask when boarding, disembarking, and for the duration of travel. <cont...>

Then we go some definitions within the Order:

Controlled free pratique shall have the same definition as under 42 CFR 71.1, meaning “permission for a carrier to enter a U.S. port, disembark, and begin operation under certain stipulated conditions.”

Conveyance shall have the same definition as under 42 CFR 70.1, meaning “an aircraft, train,road vehicle,5 vessel . . . or other means of transport, including military.” Included in the defini-tion of “ conveyance” is the term “ carrier” which under 42 CFR 71.1 has the same definition asconveyance under 42 CFR 70.1

U.S. port shall have the same definition as under 42 CFR 71.1, meaning any “seaport, airport, or border crossing point under the control of the United States.”

Then we go to 42 CFR 70.1 for its definition of "conveyance". I used the Cornell Law Legal Information Institute site.

Title 42 - Public Health CHAPTER I - PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES SUBCHAPTER F - QUARANTINE, INSPECTION, LICENSING PART 70 - INTERSTATE QUARANTINE § 70.1 General definitions.

42 CFR § 70.1 - General definitions.

Conveyance means an aircraft, train, road vehicle, vessel (as defined in this section) or other means of transport, including military.

Vessel means any passenger-carrying, cargo, or towing vessel exclusive of:
Fishing boats including those used for shell-fishing;
Tugs which operate only locally in specific harbors and adjacent waters;
Barges without means of self-propulsion;
Construction-equipment boats and dredges; and
Sand and gravel dredging and handling boats.

Now, I am NOT a lawyer, so hopefully someone much more knowledge able can chime in, But a simple language reading would suggest that cruise ships fall under the 'vessel' definition (passenger-carrying vessel) and therefore are a 'conveyance'. And the order would appear to apply to them if they depart, arrive at, or visit a US port or are in US waters (including international waters under US jurisdiction).

Vaccines, testing, masks, social distancing and constant reminders that we are all in this together. What's next, each person report to their cabin during embarkment and not leave under disembarkation? Only a masochist would cruise under these conditions.

Here we have been living with pretty strict measures since the beginning of the summer (after our first lockdown) . Testing, masks and social distancing felt a little weird in the beginning but it has pretty much become routine and now we are all used to it (Like a reflex.)

Plus, I got vaccinated before I started cruising with Twinrix and Tetanos shots. I have been getting my flu vaccine for the last two years... Not a big deal.

If that’s what is going to bring us back on a cruise ship faster, I’ll take it. All of it.

Basically, to use US ports masks must be used throughout voyage. The wording makes that clear.

Since there won't be any cruises for many months yet I'm just going to wait and see what DCL and other cruise lines do.

This! I really think most of us will be loving normal restriction free lives in our loc communities well before cruising comes back.

I’m ok with indoor common areas but I draw the line on the lido deck by the pools outdoors. That’s just ridiculous.
It also says the mask is required for the duration of travel. If you follow this to the letter of the order, that would seem to even include while you were with your own travel group in your stateroom.
