I have just finished watching this movie. What a disappointment! How did it get such good reviews??? I thought that they should have really used the original actors even if Mary Poppins would have been older.
The accents were soo poor, nothing like the original, even Mary's character wasn't there. And so many unmemorable songs!Such a pity they had a chance and they blew it.

I skipped it. My parents didn't care for it. I am that kind of person that if I don't care for an actor, I am not watching pretty much anything they do. There was someone in the movie I didn't like so I skipped it. I wasn't opposed to a continuing story, but the casting was not for me. There are many books, so the story could have easily continued.

I believe Julie Andrews' vocal chords were injured in surgery some years ago. So she couldn't have sung the role. Not to mention the fact that she's 84 years old and enjoying a well deserved retirement.
I know but she could have had a brief appearance like Van Duke and maybe have a Mary Poppins nice or something rather than replacing her... 🙄

So glad to know I didn’t miss anything. The clips I saw looked dreadful. I’m glad it bombed. Mary Poppins won’t return again anytime soon!

Dearly loved the original and saw the return. Let me just say that once was enough...

I realize the Julie Andrews declined appearing in the movie. But I think they could have payed homage to her nonetheless.

At the end of the movie, everyone is in the park. There's a scene where Mary Poppins looks at her reflection in a balloon and says, "Perfectly perfect in every way." I would have liked to have seen Julie Andrews as the reflection. The line would have been (no pun intended) perfect at that point. Julie Andrews...perfectly perfect in every way.

This is one of re-whatevers that Disney has done lately that I didn't like. I did not like her portrayal of Mary at ALL.

Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies ever. And she just didn't do the character justice at all. Julie played her as a softer person. Strict but soft. The softness and warmness just wasn't there.

The only saving grace for me was Bert's nephew and the song the lamplighters did was good and did show some resemblance to Bert and the chimney sweeps.

IMO, just like it was Bert's nephew, she should have been Mary's niece. And definitely a bit warmer in her character.

Wait wait wait... the accents were poor? Come on. Like, the entire cast was British except for Lin-Manuel Miranda and Meryl Streep. Kinda like Dick Van Dyke and Ed Wyn in the 1964 film.

You cannot honestly tell me that Dick Van Dyke’s accent was good.
Ahaha I know what you mean, but I found the cockney accent too over the top. Obviously, although not accurate, the original characters, in my mind had the original accents, if you know what I mean... 🤔

To a 6 year old ( my age when I first saw the film) Dick Van Dyke’s accent was fine. 50 years later his accent still doesn’t bother me at all.

Are you saying Dick Van Dyke's accent was fine in the original???

Edit: Er, I see we discussed this. Sorry :)

Well, it was fine - for the crazily over-the-top parody that it was. It was not realistic and I know a lot of Brits dislike it, but to me it is perfect.

I also loved Mary Poppins Returns. It was delightful.

Returns is very nice, I enjoy it. Mary Poppins is #6 on the American Film Institute's Top 100 Musicals of all time. Not only is the original superior to Mary Poppins Returns, it is near the top of all musicals. Walt Disney, the cast, and the Sherman Bros were at the top of their game for Mary Poppins. It is pure Disney magic. :earsboy:
