Marvel Is Taking Over Disney

so Disney just needs to build a Marvel park just west of the Mississippi, like around Saint Louis or even by Marceline MO. WDW was originally going to be in Saint Louis, until the Budweiser Co found out Walt didn't want alcohol in his park, then the city put the nix on that plan and Walt moved to FL. Though realistically the weather would not allow for a year round park. But It seems like a good idea to have a park on each coast and in the middle.

The way I heard it it was a bit the other way around-- Walt said he was not going to have alcohol-- and Augie Busch laughed at him and said no business can survive with out it, so Walt pulled the plug. Then they begged him to come back.

~Beer!!! I read this, too. :goodvibes

~Off topic -- I'm not too familiar with all of the Marvel characters. But, we have a Lego Marvel game for the Wii U and it's also available on all the platforms. This game has almost all the Marvel characters. We've only unlocked about 10 of them and I'm sure it will take us several months to get through the game, because we don't get to play that often. But, this game is so much fun and too funny. And the game makes sure to introduce every single character by name, there are a ton of interesting Marvel characters that I have never heard of.

~Disney has access to a lot of valuable content with the Marvel IP. And, their toys are everywhere. Plus, there are the Avenger films. :cool1:

My DS is playing that game as I type. :rotfl:

We have become huge Marvel fans since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC. Since that show started, we've watched both Thor movies, The Avengers, Captain America and all 3 Iron Mans. We will be dressed as The Avengers for MNSSHP this year. The kids' costumes arrived this afternoon.

~LOL, that is just too funny! I wish your DS could finish this game for us, it's so long but very fun! :rotfl: Unfortunately, I haven't been able to catch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but I heard it's doing very well, so I would like to get into this when I get a chance.

~Awww, I *love* The Avengers idea for MNSSHP, you all are going to steal the show with that! :cool1:

I haven't seen Agents yet either, but will soon I am sure. This and I think there is a "hero" group? " tends to feed my idea that Disney is going to develop new marvel families to use in WDW.

Also Iron man 3 kind of left the door open for a new hero/villan with the little kid inventor. Stark blew up all the suits-- maybe the kid will take over. I guess they could say this would be an Iron man family though.

I'm still confused on whether Disney can use the Gaurdians of The Galaxy Characters in the FL parks based of various reports of they can and can't do. But, if the movie does well at the box office, an 'unknown' character like Rocket Raccoon has the potential to be a huge merch and meet/greet hit at Hollywood Studios.

There are such things as "year-round indoor theme parks" -- ever heard of Lotte World near Seoul, Korea?

Though such an idea would be a ridiculously expensive undertaking, it could work. St. Louis is already home to a Six Flags park, which hasn't been kept-up very well over the past 10 years. As for Marceline, it is not easily-accessible by interstate highways or the nation's airlines, so that would be nixed...

As a St. Louisan, I can vouch for that story.

Basically, Walt Disney was in his early desires of wanting to build a park -- the St. Louis idea was supposed to be fully-enclosed for year-round operations and Anheuser-Busch CEO Auggie Busch told Disney that an alcohol-free park "would never fly", which eventually set the stage for Disneyland in Anaheim, and Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL and Williamsburg, VA (both Busch Gardens parks not only served alcohol, but they also had A-B breweries located on the property).

Needless to say, both Walt Disney's and Auggie Busch's ideas were hugely-successful for their respective audiences...

I think it really depends on how much Uni would want to push the definition of a character being a member of a family of characters.

According to the Wikipedia article about Members of the Avengers, the Guardians appeared in an issue of the Avengers comic and were made Honorary members of the Avengers. Yes, it's a loose connection, but Uni could push the issue if they wanted to.

The thing is why should they? Building marvel attractions in park will cost a lot of money to do.... Especially when Disney is being compensated technically by universal for the theme park rights by the merchandise sold In park. Not to mention Disney can still sell marvel merch. Basically Disney is now getting paid by universal for marvel island, and don't have to worry about any maintenance costs for the rides

Has anyone even thought about the chance Disney may just not use the Marvel name and just call it Disney's Avengers, or Disneys Guardians of the Galaxy. Since disney owns marvel, why not? Would that change anything? With ownership etc? Just a thought.

I don't see that happening marvel is a very strong brand with a very strong fan base. That's like saying disneys Star Wars people wouldn't be very happy.

It is a separate family and the contract apparently allows incidental interaction so everything should be a go for Guardians. BUT, the non-comic book reading public doesn't know them. I didn't. If Disney can turn it into a big enough hit, look for a new franchise and an appearance in WDW. If not, they still will make money off of everything Marvel at Universal.

Probably wouldn't make a difference to the contract. Changing the name doesn't change the fact that they are the same characters.

The whole thing is tricky and complicated. The Guardians team that Dan mentioned was actually a completely different team. They fought alien invaders that conquered earth in the far future.

The current incarnation takes place now. Besides the name and the space adventure theme, the two teams have nothing in common. So are they considered the same for licensing purposes?

Also, Iron Man was recently made a member of the current team. So would that preclude them from being used at WDW?

It should be that only Iron Man is off limits due to the Avengers membership. Am I reading the agreement correctly?

I bet that they're not making close to as much as they could. As someone pointed out, Universal made the agreement with Marvel back when Marvel was having issues.

As a Marvel comics reader, I can tell you that what they've been doing with 'Team Memberships' with the recent stories is all over the place. Who is an 'Avenger' vs a 'Guardian' seems very open to interpretation. Since Thanos (bad guy seen during Avengers credits) will become a major player in the movies, Marvel recently finshed up a huge Thanos cross-over comic series that needed a characters/team page at the beginning of each issue. Yes, it was confusing enough that they needed to keep a character cheat sheet. The below link is an example:

If it's confusing to regular readers, imagine how crazy it will be for the average off the street movie fan. And currently Marvel seems to be rotating everyone in and out of the Avengers in the books.

My best guess is that leading up the Guardians movie, the book editors will thin the Guardian team down to match the movie cast. Iron Man will no longer be in the book, and I'm thinking the remaining cast may be free of any legal obligation to Uni?

Don't know if this was pre or post MO but Disney, under a shell company, was in negotiations to purchase a huge tracts of land around Covington, LA to build WDW. Somehow, the landowners discovered Disney's part and went up A LOT on the price per acre so Walt walked away.

I agree. Big big moves will pay off in spades in the long run. Great business head. Disney stock a+.
