marvel advertising

I know that as long as Universal wants to keep the rights to the Marvel characters in Orlando they can. The contract also give universal the rights and responsibility to advertise then within 300 miles of Orlando. It also allows for regional and national advertising. However no where in the contract does it cover international advertising. It is clear however that as long as Universal Japan has the rights in Japan that they can advertise Universal Marvel rides and attraction in Japan until the rights expire in the 2020s. As for the rest of the world can universal advertise the Orlando attarctions? I think the answer is no because unless they have the rights in a county how can they use IP they dont own in an advertisement? After the Japan rights expire the rest of the world will think of Marvel and all their characters as Disney's. Can anyone please tell me under what rights Universal would have to advertise either locally outside of the 300 with the exception of a regional or national advertiment? I just don't see it.

I guess I don't know the answer since I don't have access to the contract Universal signed with Marvel back before Disney acquired Marvel. Do you?

It may well be that the international rights are covered in that contract.

We just wish Universal had fought harder to keep those rights and outbid Disney! :sad2:

The rights to the Marvel comics. It would have been nice to keep it all under the "Universal umbrella". Here's a great article about it all:

Universal did not have to bid to buy Marvel. All they had to do was follow the contract which they made with Marvel and they could have had the wirldwide rights. They decided to give up the rights everywhere except Orlando. If that was a mistake, it was a mistake Universal made and has nothing to do with Disney. I agree that Universal was stupid but that is the way it goes. The question now is who can advertise their rides and attractions and where.

They didn't outbid Disney. Universal licensed the rights from Marvel. Disney bought Marvel. Universal allowed the rights to expire. It was theirs to lose.

Correct I don't think Universal was in position to buy Marvel at the time anyways, They were building Potter phase 1 and just didn't have the money. Now of course that is a different story Comcast has money and is spending it on their parks.

Do you think disney has done a bad job with marvel? All of the movies that marvel has made since the purchase have been successes, especially avengers being the biggest hit. Do you think universal would've done even better? As for the theme parks universal has rights to Orlando but thats it disney has theme park rights to the rest. Iron man is set to open in 2016 in Hong Kong. I'm sure if that is a success more international parks and Disneyland in California will see marvel additions.

That's the sentiment I was trying to express -- "outbid" was a poor choice of words. I should have said we wish Universal hadn't let those rights go

Yes, the movies are great and we don't fault Disney for what they have done with them. Our personal sentiments are that Marvel should stay in Universal -- Disney has enough to tout! Just personal opinions. We just didn't feel that Disney needed to get their hands on this one -- but I'm speaking from a house of diehard Marvel fans. I'm sure I'll get more backlash with arguments about Disney doing a good job. That wasn't my original point -- I wasn't targeting Disney. All's good ;)

are Universal allowed to expand their existing Marvel attraction or are they restricted to the numbers they have at the moment?

Universal owns the Orlando rights they can use marvel in anyway they want in orlando. They cannot do that in japan, china, california or anywhere else tho.

Considering the precedent of Oswalds rights being traded back to Disney in return for a football commentator. I wonder if Disney have looked at how much Universal would want for the Marvel rights.

They would have to cover the cost of retheming the attractions and areas that are currently Marvel themed, like the Spiderman ride and Hulk coaster, and probably also the cost of acquiring a replacement property of comparable value. If I were Universal I would say that's a big, big number.
