DH, DD, and I have been trying to make this bow for about half an hour with directions off her website and our bows look pretty bad.Website says it's foolproof, ha!

I guess we are a bow-challenged familly!

Does anyone here actually hand make your bows?

herc.

I hand make my bows, I make the fluffy ones. I buy ribbon from Costco every year to make them, incredibly cost efficient.

I am not sure I know how to explain making them and I do not have pictures.

for Martha's favorite bow, tie it just like your shoelaces, but turn the package around so that when you tie it the tails face the front, it's weird but it just works that way, a grosgrain ribbon works the best.

Go get yourself a bow maker at Michael's or Joannes. They are about $9-10 (don't forget one of the coupons they always have). I got one two years ago and it works great.

Hercamore~ I make my own bows and I can tell you it takes strong hands. Sometimes when I have to make a lot, my hands actuall cramp. It is especially hard if you don't have two-sided ribbon because you twist on every layer. One really big hint is that you don't want to make the loops too big.

Here's how I do a bow...

1. If you want a little loop in the middle, start by holding one end of the ribbon in you non-dominant hand (left for me) between your thumb and pointer finger. Make a loop about an inch in diameter going away form you. Add the newest layer between your thumb and pointer finger.
2. Now pull the ribbon toward you and loop it under the size you want. Add the layer to your left hand.
3. Loop the ribbon away from you on the opposite side of the bow. Add the layer to your left hand.
4.Keep alternating loops toward you and away from you until you have the number of loops you like. If you want a "tail", make your last loop huge and add the to the left hand.
5. Squeeze all layers you are holding together from the sides of the ribbon using your thumb and pointer finger.
6. Use a wire or chenille stem to run through the middle of the small center loop.
7. Twist wire around all layers of the bow and as tightly as possible.
8. Once everthing is wired together, cut the ribbon from the roll (be careful! don't cut in the wrong place!).
9. Cut the big tail loop right in the middle.
10. Adjust your loops. Don't be afraid to pull a little-- remember they are wired!

Nobody would ever mistake me for Martha Stewart but I do know how to make a bow! :cool1: Hope this helps!

I used to make LOTS of bows... made them for weddings, etc. and did them all by hand. I remember doing them at my parent's house and my father just staring at my hands. He said quietly, "I can't believe you can just DO that..." :p

It DOES take practice, LOTS of it, and like riding a bike, once you get it, it's a breeze!

Btw. that bowmaker IS great! Helps with the measuring and gets you past the learning curve.

All right, thanks for all the tips!

DD bought some wire ribbon 75% off at Joannes Fabric tonight and has been practiing for 3 hours!.

Bows looks pretty good.

she is thrilled.

Have to check out that bowmaker thing for her bday in Jan.

LOL. When I saw the title of your thread I thought, who teaches their kid to bow? Or curtsey for that matter?
