Marshmallow Question

What Size works in Hot Cocoa?

  • The bigger the better--fills the cup

  • Smaller rules--melts faster

  • Who cares, they're homemade marshmallows

  • Eww...who would want that slimy melty stuff!

So, I'm making some homemade marshmallows for the first time and plan to give them (with some homemade hot chocolate mix) as gifts to the neighbors.

DH comes in as I'm cutting them up and says I'm cutting them the wrong size (after I've cut most of them!).

So I pose this question, what size marshmallows would you use in your hot chocolate if you had the choice?

Here are the recipes, if any one wants them:
Marshmallows
ETA: I made the vanilla version

Hot Cocoa Mix

I make them too (just plain though, not strawberry) and I cut them in about 1" squares. I like them big. :)

Thanks for the links the the recipes! We've got fresh strawberries and the family LOVES marshmallows. Actually, they love putting the marshmallows in the microwave and seeing them get HUGE, then putting them in the hot cocoa. :rotfl:

Oooooohhhhhh thank you for the recipes!! I know what I'm doing on Saturday. Any size would be fine with me.

With homemade marshmallows, large ones all the way, Baby! I think that's what sets them apart from store-bought.

QUESTION ON THE COCOA MIX:

I've been testing different types of homemade cocoa mixes this season. The kind I normally make takes forever, and I never want to make it after Christmas dinner. The few mixes I've tried to make don't melt very well once you add the water to the mug. They taste great -- don't get me wrong -- but there's just lots of cocoa and dried milk specks covering the mug that didn't melt. DH & I both agree it's just not very attractive.

Does this recipe actually melt the mix once you pour the hot water in the mug?

Honestly, I don't know! I haven't tried it yet....

One suggestion is I always add just a little bit of water, maybe 2 or 3 tablespoons and stir it into the dry mix and make a paste. That way I can stir pretty hard and not make a huge mess of hot milk or water. Then I add the rest of the liquid. That might help your problem :)

Ahhh! Beautiful.

Will try the paste first tonight. Makes sense. I make a paste with my normal recipe before I mix in the milk/cream in the saucepan. Don't know why it would be any different here.

Thank you!!!

You can MAKE marshmallows? I'm flippin impressed. And voted "Hookairs" on the size. :)

We had home made marshmallows at the food and wine festival....Sweet Sunday.
Boy, oh boy, were they ever better than the store bought ones ::yes::
I voted small. I like to scoop them in the spoon and get some each time :)
