Marriage Equality!

I think that churches should be left alone to perform marriages for whoever they wish however I also believe that they should keep their thoughts to themselves. It's fine to have beliefs but it's important iMO to understand that others don't necessarily believe the same things and shouldn't be forced to live in a certain way.

Anyway, this borders on talking about religion. Why not just be happy that so many of our fellow citizens have the chance to be a little happier now? Besides what they do is no one's business. Just let them live in peace for goodness sake.

First I guess we are allowed to talk religion now??

Just because some do or don't follow certain things in the bible speaks to people not the Creator. Second you say the Old Testament was not kind to women, Are we talking about people or the Creator? Just curious.

I am not happy that government issues marriage licenses to anyone. I don't think it's their business and is a way to make money and collect taxes.

Personally homosexuality is not something I agree with based on my faith. However, that does not reflect in my treatment of anyone. My cousin is a lesbian and I spent this last weekend with she and her partner and had a blast as usual. She doesn't judge my views and I don't hers. We have respect for each other's opinion. Flame me.
It's only ok to talk about religion if you are bashing it.

Good thing it's not something to "agree" with. It just is. I also hope you don't agree with eating shellfish, wearing mixed fabrics, and playing football on Sundays.

I'm not specifically advocating for or against any particular religion, but I can't for the life of me understand why there's so much consternation that somehow this SCOTUS ruling is an infringement on one's own religious liberty. The ruling is about equal treatment under the law irrespective or anyone's personal or religious beliefs. It doesn't require that anyone personally approve of same sex marriage.

No ones bashing religion. That would get this thread closed quickly and that would be a shame.
Yes, it would be. This has been a pretty good conversation about an historic event in American history.

I have a vague memory of a DIScussion about whether or not to paint rooms neutral colors to sell a house that got hotter than anything I've seen here. ;)

I have to say...it's encouraging to see the expressions of love and acceptance on this thread. Gives me hope. :)

I think that some seem to be afraid that their church will be forced to do things that conflict with their religious beliefs. I don't believe that that will happen. Plus there are those who think that others have to live like they do. No they don't.

Oh brother....

It's not "oh brother", it's a valid point. There are so many things mentioned in the bible that would be ludicrous to legislate. Then there's that whole "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife" thing. If people were really interested in preserving the "sanctity of marriage", why aren't they focused on criminalizing adultery and repealing laws allowing divorce? I'm not even being facetious; it just doesn't make sense. I mean, I know "sanctity of marriage" is a smokescreen, but if you really, truly cared about that viewpoint, gay marriage is peanuts compared to the societal effect of divorce.

Because everyone has learned to live with that. The bible condoned many things that we abhor today and most rational people know this. This is new and it is threatening the worldview of people who follow religious doctrine and think their doctrine should be legislative. When what people have been brought up to believe and is told is true, true, true and then the world does an about-face on it---well, it really shakes their foundation. Some more than others.

That is a great question. I think the divorce rate in our country is crazy and there are a slu of things that probably contribute to that.....for example, pornography, attitudes, affairs...etc... I think it's about changing hearts and encouraging people to be in it for the long haul. However, I know all marriages are not equally yoked and divorce can be necessary. Speaking to that and the original topic I would love to talk more in depth about why my opinion is valid to me but I would surely receive points because it truly is a faith based opinion. If you wanted to understand why I feel that way you are welcome to pm me and I say that with all sincerity. people on here have valid questions and I'm afraid my hands are tied because I can't answer my thoughts to the degree I want because then I have have to go to the religious discussion.

I think everyone has heard the faith based opinions ad nauseum over the last few days. I personally have heard several different versions of it. No one will debate that it's valid to you - I think everybody gets that. But the wonderful thing about our country is that one faith-based opinion isn't allowed to be the law for everybody else.

My question isn't why you feel the way you do, it's why you think your faith and your faith alone should be set into law.

If you were to read all my posts you will see that I never said anything about my faith dictating the law. I actually said up thread that I don't think the government should be in issuing marriage licenses to ANYBODY. The government is in it for tax purposes and initially for the census. I think the government should stay out of it. I just said my faith made me feel a certain way about homosexuality. Nothing more, nothing less. Others may feel they have heard the other side ad nauseum. I think posters know my opinion and there is not much more to say so I'm stepping out. This has been a good conversation and have enjoyed reading this spirited debate!:)

But the gov't does issue marriage licenses.

You know what I can't really ask say what I want because of the board rules, so nevermind..

I don't believe it will happen, either. But, I can see how one might think it would. And I really think this is why this decision took so long. I imagine millions of people believe this is the first step toward THEIR church being forced to perform gay marriages.

Yes. I listen to BOTT radio and other view points and this pretty much sums it up.

I do expect some dust ups in churches. Many denominations are pro gay marriage, but that doesn't mean their individual members and even ministers necessarily agree. Will be interesting to see it all shake out.

The worst is Facebook postings. I scanned my FB yesterday and well, oh boy.

You don't need the church to get married, you need the law too. This about the law recognizing legal marriage between 2 consenting adults, this has nothing to do with forcing churches to perform marriage ceremonies. This is no different than it was when only men and women were only allowed to marry by law and I'm pretty sure the church wasn't forced to marry all of them.
