Marriage Equality!

I think it's hilarious when people say, "I'm moving to Canada!" Gay marriage is legal there. It is illegal in Afghanistan, though. Maybe they can emigrate there.

Does this mean we can now marry our dog, brother/sister, or some other inanimate object? Where do you draw the line?
This is tongue in cheek, right?

I read the responses to my question. Yes it was a serious question. Yes I know the rainbow will always mean to me what it means to me. I didn't mean to suggest that I felt it being used as a symbol for being gay cheapened it in some way. I meant that culture associates the rainbow flag with being gay. I asked if it would now still be a symbol for being gay. That's all. Not homophobic here. If my first post was read I said congratulations to everyone the new law effects and suggested tolerance from others. I am asking if there is now a need for a symbol as we are all equal now for marriage.
I'm pretty sure the rainbow flag will continue to represent gay rights/pride for a long time. Giving gay people the right to marry did not automatically erase all homophobia, just like electing a black president did not end racism. There's still work to be done.

Actually you asked for it back, suggesting it was somehow taken taken away.

Do you also seriously believe that "we are all equal now for marriage" and everything else gay related? The rainbow is a symbol of gay pride. That's not ending. The red equal sign represents marriage equality. That's not necessarily a done deal, especially in the view of some people. I don't think mathematicians feel like they need to ask for it back.

Although women and minorities have "equal rights", it really isn't always all that equal. There's way more work to be done, all around.

I sure wish I still had my rainbow shirt. Whose with me!

Is this a serious question? I'll say yes and respond. I don't think all the gay people have voted yet on whether to keep the rainbow as its symbol. ;) And I don't think it was taken from you. You've got it, you've always had it, and will continue to have it for whatever purpose is meaningful for you. :)

Yes because they seriously don't want to use the rainbow and have people think they are gay or a straight ally.

The rainbow has been used by the LGBT community far longer than during the times of marriage challange so you're probably going to have to get used to them using it. I'm pretty sure that's not going anywhere.

I think this would have been true if marriage was still just a religious ceremony.

However as soon as the first laws were written that gave additional rights to married couples (tax breaks, rights to inherit property, rights to make medical decisions for one another, etc etc) marriage stopped being just a religious ceremony and became a legal contract as well. That legal contract needs to be allowed for all people no matter what religion and no matter what their ***.

Now as far as I know no one has decided the church needs to recognize marriages of many other types. The church wouldn't recognize my marriage as it wasn't done by a priest. I'm fine with that.

That's my point - those special privileges created the need for regulation of something that shouldn't have been the government's business in the first place.

No, the point is if we hadn't allowed gov't into our lives to begin with, there'd have been nothing to debate - and such ceremonies would have happened decades ago instead of now.
Ooooohhhh. Duh! :)

Are you referring to RAINBOWS or the rainbow FLAG? Different things. I don't know that I've ever seen a rainbow flag used as a symbol of a Christian promise...rainbows, sure...but not a flag.

I thought protecting our rights, freedoms and pursuits of happiness was one of the main functions of our government.

And yet the gov't has denied this right for how long now? That's my point - had the gov't been kept out of defining marriage in the first place, they wouldn't have had the opportunity to define it the way it was.
