Mark's Starlight Wish Trip - Nov 2008

More on Robert Munsch (and bring out the kleenex, Amy!)

Happy to hear that Bob's books are on bookshelves in Texas, too! Here's a link to Robert Munsch's website. One terrific feature are the links to Bob telling/reading his stories. This is the link to him telling the story of "Love You Forever" to an audience:

Of course, it's even better with the pictures as you atch the mother's son grow up into a man. I first used this website once when I was quite sick and Peter was away. I had lost my voice, so read aloud time was going to be a challenge. But hooray for technology! I downloaded severalclips of Bob reading stories that we had in our home library, pulled out the books, got my laptop talking away and all I had to do was turn the pages and snuggle! The boys thought it was a great adventure!

Hope you enjoy it!

First you made me cry with the pictures and then you made me cry thinking about that story! What are you trying to do to me? ;) I used to read that story to the day care kids when I worked in a day care. I always cried.

I'm so glad the boys like their shirts and their pillowcases! Thanks for sharing the pictures!

Alison,

First of all your house is very pretty, I bet it will be even better after the work is done.

And second I have to read that book, I was tearing up just from your description. I'm going to look for it on my next day off.

The shirts and pillow cases are wonderful, and the boys look sooo happy. They also look so precious sleeping.

Hello…I’m back! Good grief… I’ve been given more than 10 minutes computer time! I’m usually fighting with the boys. Yes, we are a family of 4 and we have 1 computer at home between us…can you believe it? I am asking Santa for a laptop for Christmas though, and now that we’ll be going wireless post-reno, I’m all set!

So, on to the next excitement of the week. Earlier, I posted about HeatherSue’s wonderful package that included tshirts AND pillowcases for the boys. But that was just the first package we received that day. Yes, the postman is quite intrigued about our mail these days!

This next package was from Tracie – who generously paid a small fortune to ensure the package arrived on a timely basis…thank you, Tracie! I’m sorry it was SO expensive to make it here so quickly.

Now this package opening had a special element because Shelli, our Wish Granter from Starlight Starbright, was there that evening to deliver Mark’s Wish Package. Opening the package from Tracie added to the evening. Shelli had already heard from Jessica, our Big Give coordinator, to verify our trip etc. Shelli had been quite intrigued to hear that we have this family of DISfriends and how we’ve found each other as Wish Trippers, DISBoutiquers, Big Give families and so on. She’s a very giving person, and also very talented from an arts/crafts/handwork perspective, so she was so interested to see what we had received thus far. And she really enjoyed helping to rip that package open!

And there was something very special in this package…tshirts for the whole family! Aren’t they cute? Now we’ll ALL be able to wear Wish Shirts on our trip!!! I’ve seen lots of families wearing Make a Wish tshirts, but it seems Starlight doesn’t do that. Wearing these precious mickey/Minnie shirts will help us feel even more like a Wish family.

The shirts fir prefectly - on all of us! Look at Douglas' face in this one...excited or what?!?

Proud to be a Wish brother:

(Please note the drycleaning on the banister, packed boxed for the storage room in the basement,e tc. No, we do not usually live this way!)

And Mark loves his too:
HPIM1603.jpg

(Sorry, no photo's of Peter or me, but we DID try them on and they DO fit prefectly!)

Tracie, these shirts are so sweet! Mark will always this trip, and the days (in-suite laundry at GKTW, folks!) when we ALL wear the mouse ears shirts!!! Thank you!!!

Alison

I am so happy that they fit everyone! My boys are so big (18 & 15) and the tees for your boys looked so small to me, I was afraid they would be too small.

The postal story is my DH's. I asked him to mail the package for me. When I got home from work, he told me "I think I spent more on shipping than you did on making the shirts, but I knew it was special so I made sure to insure it and make sure you could track it". He is part of the Big Give and didn't even know it!

I am so happy you all like them. I hope you have a great trip and can not wait to hear all about it.

Tracie

Once again, I have a flurry of updates! I haven’t had a chance to tell you more about our visit with Shelli, our Wish Granter, who dropped off Mark’s Wish Package last week. We invited Shelli to come and stay for dinner and the evening, and it was a lovely opportunity for her to spend lots of time with the boys.

Shelli has been working on an arts project for her home. A painter herself, she has asked many important people in her life to help her with this, and she asked the boys to contribute. She arrived with a 5”X7” canvas for each of them, and a selection of paints in the palate she has in her living room. She showed us how she has framed other canvasses at home – 3 to a frame, consistent frames so it looks like a collage, some horizontal, some vertical. It is a wonderful personal, unique collage…and now our boys will be part of it.

Here they are working steadily on their canvasses.

We had a fun dinner, then shared the excitement of opening Tracie’s Big Give package (see previous post).

And then it was time for the Wish Package! When Shelli had told me “the package” was ready, I pictured a fairly good sized envelope. OK, well…I was wrong!

Apparently, THIS is what a “Wish Package” looks like:

HPIM1594.jpg

HPIM1593.jpg

Yup, something tells me there’s more in there than tickets and a confirmation for a rental car!

After the boys got over their shock, they dove in – Shelli had made it clear that the box was for all of us, but especially the two of them. Yes, indeed, right on top was a Starlight Starbright passport/ticket holder for me. To be honest, it was the most welcome gift that night, because it contained confirmation of all the marvelous things we’d been told…but there is simply no substitute for holding an Air Canada e-ticket – with seat selection already complete - right in your hot little hand…for having an actual confirmation number for a rental car…a tips sheet from Give Kids the World…a lovely expense cheque...and a personalized itinerary that confirmed absolutely everything. Ah…relief…back to a sense of control…

But the boys didn’t stop there for long. They dove into the box.

HPIM1604.jpg

HPIM1605.jpg

Just below was a delightful Winnie the Pooh bear. Both boys immediately said, “Polly would love this!”, a reference to our Nanny who left in August, and who had bequeathed (reluctantly) her own Pooh Bear to one of her nephews. I think the boys would like to pass this one along to her (“I really think she missed he Winnie, Mummy – we should give her ours.”

Beneath that, was a clear plastic bag filled with goodies, treat that could be sued on the plane, word puzzle books, sunscreen, hats, all kinds of things that would be useful on the trip.

And below that, a pile of wrapped gifts!!!

HPIM1609.jpg

HPIM1609.jpg

HPIM1612.jpg

HPIM1615.jpg

Said Mark, “this is just like Christmas!” Shelli just beamed as she watched their delight. They both received a different Chroncicles of Narnia book, both some Lego, an additional Mission Mars Lego for Douglas, a microscope with projector screen for Mark (yes, there’s a similarity to the one he picked out at that Starlight event a couple of weeks ago!), and both received SpyGear night vision goggles! WOW!!! I had NO IDEA that this was going to happen!

Shelli, Mark, and Douglas had a great time exploring the contents of the box and I have tried to capture some of it here. Unfortunately, my photographer skills do not live up to the sheer joy and excitement of the occasion. After a while, they saw me reviewing the contents of the passport holder. It also included guides to each of the WDW parks, plus Seaworld and Universal. After some further review, Mark commented sagely, Mummy, I think we’re going to have a really, really really good time.”

I think he’s right! We’re going to create some magical memories, away from appointments, doctors, hospitals, g-tubes (mostly), physiotherapy and the like. Mark will always face the challenges of his disability, and he will be there to help him on his way, but there are certainly magical times ahead.

Thank you, Starlight, Starbright!

Next up…but does this family of Canadian Wish Trippers actually have an itinerary?!? Find out soon!

Tshirts! A fabulous Stitch for Douglas:

Thank you, HeatherSue - the boys love the tshirts, and they fit beautifully! They were both so impressed that you knew exactly which characters they like!

Ah...but HeatherSue hadn't finished sprinkling her pixie dust! There was something else in her package...personalized pillowcases...and they were SUCH a hit with the boys!!! I am sorry, I have not taken a close up of them, so I'll show you how they were put into use the very first night:

Here is Mark, comfy with his SpongeBob pillow:

And Douglas dreaming of the Simpsons:
th_HPIM1617.jpg

HeatherSue, they have slept with their pillows every night since then. They just love them. Thank you!!!

Aren't they just ever so cute when they're sleeping? My little angels. Sometimes I still go into their bedroom at night, just to watch them sleep. Do you know the story "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch? He's a Canadian author, who's had success around the world. While most of his stories are really funny, this one is ever so touching about a mother who holds her little boy first as a baby, then a toddler, then so on, including teenage when she would just go into watch him sleep. As she ages, the tables turn and as a grown man, he cradles his mother when she is old and frail. I am one of many mothers I know who can't read the story to their children all the way through without crying. Bob is a big supporter of kids with disabilities and we've met him a few times. He even wrote a story just for the boys!!! It hasn't been published, but we still dream that maybe he'll publish it someday...it's a precious, priceless memory.

And precious, priceless memories are what you DISBoutiquers are giving us. We shall never forget your kindness. Thank you!!!

I'll post an update about the package that came from Tracie as soon as I can, and also tell you more about the Wish Granter's visit.

Alison

Aww, Alison! The boys look so sweet!!! Those shirts sure did turn out great! And I love the sleeping pictures!!!

But, you had to go making me cry talking about that book! I still go into Corey's room every night to check on him. He will always be my "little" boy, even if he does have several inches on me now!

Tracie's family shirt turned out great too! It looks like everyone was really happy with them!

So, what games do you have for your Wii??

Allison,
Those were awesome pictures of the boys with their shirts from Heather and Tracie. Them sleeping on their pillow cases is adorable. I still read that book to Jonah every once in a while.
It's exciting that you got your stuff from Starlight Star bright. Those are some cool presents that they got.

Good morning!

Teresa - did you spot that Wii remote in the background of one of the pictures? In fact, they are down at the Wii now, which is why I got the computer. We are going to eb games today to trade in some of their wii and nintendo games - but they really like any of the Lego games (we have star wars and indiana jones right now), the wii sports (I got wii fit for my borthday...we use some of these to keep Mark active, but it's hard to help him do it); zelda ia a big favourite and so is mario cart. We keep rotating them through, trading in and so on. We made an investment in games and then it's up to the boys to work together to decide which ones can be traded in. It's an excellent exercise and we love to see them so motivated to work together to come to an agreement!

What wonderful updates Alison! Thank you so much for sharing!

Your house is absolutely gorgeous! I was sad to see the garage down already but I know it will be even better once finished.

Heather did a great job on those shirts and pillowcases! And Tracie's family shirts are wonderful! She was so thoughtful when putting them together.

The kids look like they are having a great time with the wish granter. She seems so sweet and like she loves what she is doing! I bet it is a big relief to actually have all the info in hand!

That is one of our all-time favorite books! I sing the "song" part to my kids all the time. :grouphug: whether they like it or not...they always love the part where the baby is flushing stuff down the toilet.

Hello! It's been so long since I last update! I hope some of you subscribed, so you can find us again! I have been able to check in on a few of the opther trip reports, but it's been so crazy here, and not too much going on Wish Trip wise...well...I just didn't update.

It's been very, very busy. Our reno has started in earnest. The footings are in and the exterior walls are starting to go up. Very early stages at this point, but it is starting to look very real now. It's exciting! The not so exciting part is getting ready to move out of the house. I am spending hours on this and it stills doesn't look like I am making any progress!

I thought some of you might be interested in some of our plans for our trip! I need to ponder these a bit today as a pick me up, so here goes:

Saturday Nov 1 Travel; explore Give Kids the World

Sunday Nov 2 SeaWorld. I have also booked the special dolphin encounter as a surprise. Originally, Mark had hoped to swim with dolphins, but that['s just not in the budget!

Monday Nov 3 Epcot - Mostly Future World; lunch at Coral Reef. We're really looking forward to Test Track, Mission Space, Soarin', and exploring a lot of places we didn't have time for on our last trip.

Tuesday Nov 4 Universal - they simply cannot wait to ride the Simpsons Ride!!! They don't know as much about Universal, but I've been studying up - they're going to enjoy it! Gotta wear those Bart shirts from the Big Give...but then Mark will want to change during the day to his Scooby's Ultimate Fan shirt!

Wednesday Nov 5 Magic Kingdom; lunch at Whispering Canyon Cafe. We're going to enjoy some of our favourites at MK, but take a nice break, take the boal to WL and have a fun lunch. Friends have told us there is lots of silliness at the WCC so should be fun! Mark will want to arrive at the MK and head directly to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Douglas will be voting for Space Mountain. We have another day at MK later in the trip, so we'll do what we can today but not push it. Defnitely wearing those family Wish shirts today...although Douglas might want to bring along the Stitch shirt...

Thursday Nov 6 Disney Hollywood Studios THere is one major objective for today: Jedi Training Academy. Both boys are very eager. We have our wonderful Jedi Mickey tshirts from the Big Give! Must make it back to GKTW for Christmas!

Friday Nov 7 This is looking like Universal Day #2, for a reason I'll explain below.

Saturday Nov 8 Lots of time to say goodbey to GKTW. I haven't said much about it, but we do plan on leaving lots of time to relax in the village, so some of our parks days will be shorter so we can return "home" for a swim, join the activities and so on. This is our checkout day, but we're so luck...our trip is not over...we are moving over to the Grand Floridian! As we make the move, we're hoping to stop and spend some time at Downtown Disney. We're haivng dinner at Narcoossee's, at the hotel. They have a deck right on the marina - you can step out and watch the fireworks, and they have the music piped in. It's wonderful.

Sunday November 9 Back to Epcot - after enjoying some time around the hotel. This time we'll spend more time at World Showcase (shopping for the boys in Japan, beers around the world for Peter and I am determined that this time, we're going to see the new O Canada movie!!!). dinner at the Rose and Crown and stay for Illuminations.

Monday November 10 - Back to Magic Kingdom, and try to do everything we missed on the first day. If Mark has his way (and I bet he will!!!), we'll do a repeat of our first trip and ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad multipled times...last time t was 10 times!!!...thankfully, not in a row! Dinner at the California Grill, watch the fireworks on the observation deck. We all loved this the last time.

Tuesday, November 11 - Back home...with lots of memories!!!

So, what do you think? do you think we'll manage to remember to pace ourselves, given that we have a good long trip?!?

I'll be back...

Alison

And I don't want to forget to say it "publicly"...

HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY, MARK & DOUGLAS!!!

What a happy day for the boys...and what memories it brings back for Peter and me. Born at 26/40 weeks, ever so fragile. The joy of their safe delivery, the fear of the unknown, not knowing if they would survive.

But look at them now!!!

Alison

Allison, we will be arriving at GKTW on the 6th! We will be doing the Christmas in the Village that night. Are you all going? I would love to meet you and your family!! Sounds like our boys have a lot in common!!!
