So sick to my stomach right now after reading some of the reports coming out of Marineland about animal cruelty and the death of the baby beluga. The last time we were there we vowed no more...you could just feel that something wasn't right there. They charged huge admission fees, and the poor animals there. Just sickened.:(

I hope it gets closed down.

ITA!!
I haven`t liked that place for a long time. I was there when I was a kid and all I can remember is the bears that you could feed. They sold you a cone of marshmallows to feed them- awesome diet for bears imo. I never went back.

There are some terrible things coming out about that place Very sad

:worried: I had to stop reading the articles as they were just horrid.

I havnt been there since I was a kid but I have heard "tales" of how bad the place seemed.

It should just be closed down. People with no respect for livings things will never have respect.

the marshmallow thing bothered me too,we used to take a bag of apples for them instead, then ofcourse theres the fish in the nastyu river that they feed dog food to,and the cheap junk that isn't even good for dogs UGH disgusting!!!

Wish they sell that place to Disney! should be enough land to build a park and a hotel!!

Sadly this is nothing new at all. I've lived in the area my whole life and remember vividly the protests and newspaper articles from the 90's. It was a big deal and basically nothing changed. Anyone I have ever known who worked there was disgusted with the place.
Sadly people keep going. Some are ignorant of the conditions, some simply don't care and think it's their right.
We've never taken our kids there, and refuse to allow relatives to take our kids there. Despite knowing these things I know of at least 3 sets of people with seasons passes because they are cheap entertainment.
I can think of much better ways to teach my children about animals:(

Sorry to get on my soapbox but when you see the same charges and accusations over and over and over and watch nothing change over decades it all feels a little hopeless.

You are right, after it being brought to light before why was nothing done?? What is wrong with this world, it is just so sad for those poor animals. I had to stop reading that article about the horrid death of that baby beluga, and how the mother was trying to help it. Please nobody go there!!:worried:

I find this so disgusting and sad, I find animals in captivity so cruel, my kids have never been to a zoo or to seaworld or anywhere that holds their animals in small confined spaces, these poor animals need their space, makes me so sad:sad:

the last time we went there there were protestors outside. Still people go. The only way to stop it is for people to stop going. There were articles in the paper last year too I think. We refuse to go to Sea World in Orlando as well. These animals should be in the ocean.

Agreed. The only way to speak to this situation in any way that will make an impact is with your wallet. Unfortunately nothing happens because there are zero regulations or a governing body to look into this type of thing in Ontario so there is no accountability. Something will have to change legally, and people need to kindly and patiently spread the word. Articles like this help, and many locals know what it is like, but so many tourists have no idea. I can't blame them, they just don't know.:sad2:

The only way I would feel comfortable going to see these types of animals would be at a sanctuary for ill or injured animals with the hopes they can be sent back to the ocean. I really don't need to see a walrus clap it's hands or a seal balance a ball on it's nose. I've seen dolphins jumping in the ocean, that's more entertaining than marineland.

I'm holding off my judgement until all sides of the story are heard and out there. I tend not to react to allegations made by 8 "former" employees. The first thing I ask myself is, if it were indeed true, why not say something when you were actually employed there. Add to the fact that the media are generally sh*t disturbers and will sell a whole lot more papers glorifying nasty details of allegations, then actually waiting for facts to print. I'm a bit skeptical that way though.

I've been to Marineland a few times and saw nothing there that screamed animal cruelty to me. That's not to say it's not there though, I'm not completely naive.

I'm also definitely not on the bandwagon to shut down all zoos and aquariums though since a lot of these places to a ton of work for the research and preservation of animals, often endangered, so a blanket statement like "they should be shut down" doesn't sit well with me.

If in fact these allegations prove to be true, then I obviously think something needs to be done to rectify it and people should be charged accordingly. But, until allegations turn to proof, I'm not joining in on a lynch mob.

Sadly people keep going. Some are ignorant of the conditions, some simply don't care and think it's their right.

I'm sure many of the people going are tourists from around the world visiting the Falls. They haven't seen the articles in the local paper. So it's not necessarily they are ignorant or don't care.

I'm in a quandary over this. We are vising NF soon and bought tickets online on Monday. This story broke on Tuesday. If we don't go we are out $175. It will not aid in a protest if we just don't use our tickets as they already have our money. We may as well go and let the kids ride I guess.

I have seen this posted on other message boards this week. Funny how everyone knew this yet the Humane Society has never received any complaints.

The articles all say it has been accredited so there is some type of regulations. I think it's self regulated as it's done by a Zoo//Aquarium governing body and not an outside body.

The video is absolutely devestating. Had a very hard watching all the way through - seeing the animals clearly unhappy and I would certainly say in pain. I know that not all sides of the story have been addressed but on our last trip to Marineland I was not impressed by some of the tanks and I will not attend again.

If you really have concerns, you may want to try calling them for a refund. I know their policy is final sale on tickets, but given the negative publicity at the moment, they may very well be willing accommodate.

If you still really want to go and enjoy the park, then that's okay too, IMO.

Also, your last sentence is part of the reason I'm holding off judgement. I don't undersand, if what is being alleged is true, that a trainer would just resign if this was going on. Wouldn't a lover of animals (which I would have to assume a trainer is) do everything in their power to help the animals? If they were complaining to management and changes were not being made, then why not go to the authorities? You wouldn't have to resign to go to the authorities. If you got fired for doing it, your case would only be that much more solid. Going to the media after you've already left, just makes it look like you're a disgruntled ex-employee.

The humane society is now looking into all the claims. It was on CHCH this afternoon, they are supposed to be updating their story at 6 tonight.

Mallory says the Niagara Falls Humane Society has not received complaints about the care of sea mammals at Marineland.

My point is everyone on the message boards claiming they knew the animals were being abused yet no one bothered calling the Humane Society?? :confused3

Makes me wonder if all the locals are either jumping on the media bandwagon or making excuses.

I think this whole thing is actually laughable. Marineland has gotten complaints from people thinking the conditions are 'horrible' for YEARS!! Yet, there are no actual filed complaints against them. Really? If people, you, thought things were so bad, why not speak up and make a complaint. You are just as much guilty as the owner, supposedly.

Like any other park, Marineland needs an accreditation. While the group that does the accreditation is not licensed, they would not hand out an accreditation to a park that was not treating the animals well. As well, another group investigated the park and found no signs of anything being wrong with the animals.

This man, after QUITTING, finally speaks up? Wow. 12 years of working there and he now figures, conditions for the animals aren't good. You would think, that a trainer, would of spoke up, put in a complaint, somewhere along those 12 years. But, there is not one recorded. Makes me wonder what really happened with him. And how much he actually cared.

As well as the other 8, unnamed EX employees of Marineland. Again, now they are just stepping up. Something doesn't sound right. And why be annonymous? Why not, if you have a real complain, and believe in something, stand out and voice it? But, sounds like they are hiding.

I have a friend, who travels all over the world. And has a heart filled with love and compassion for animals. This is what she believes, after writing on her blog:

So.. all the people freaking out about the Toronto Star article regarding Marineland. I just wanted to point out some simple facts: Phil Demers worked for Marineland for 12 years before he figured out the treatment of the animals was *IN HIS OPINION* cruel. The WHOLE article is HIS OPINION — and trust me, the media is evil. They misprint, misquote, misrespresent and slander more regularly than not.

Marineland (and other aquariums) don’t use CHLORINE, the use bromine and brackish or salt water. Seals and sea lions genetically suffer from cataracts and other eye diseases. Go to any aquarium, or the wild (might I suggest the Galapagos) and take a good look in their eyes. A blind man can see clouding and discolouration. Deers: antlers grow and skin molts. The bleeding is natural. People should watch national geographic or something — better yet, take a walk on the wild side. If you want to see animals in hell – check out the Beijing zoo (in my opinion death row for animals). The life expetancy of male seals and sea lions is 20-25 years – Sandy made it to 20. That’s expected. The quotes by the veternarian were 3rd party quotes by Demers — there was NO actual quotes from a vet. Walruses often regurgitate their food. Google it – you can see videos about it if you so desire. Put a salt water fish in fresh water. It will die. Put a fresh water fish in salt water. It will die. Put diesel in a gas engine. It will die. Put gas in a diesel engine. It will die. A mother cat has a litter of kittens, moves all but the weak sickly one. Leaves it to die. Nature – it’s raw. It happens. It took Phil Demers 12 years to voice conern?? What’s wrong with him?!?!? I bet he got fired.

‎From the article – there were 8 others who all chose to not be named. I’d put my name to ANYTHING i feel valid. People who know me certainlly know this! I stand up proudly for what I believe in. Being anonymous is just a feeble excuse to bad mouth an employer.

I’m familiar with Ric O’Barry and his belief that the flipper dolphins committed suicide. And Paul Watson a world wide bully – such a severe extrimist, his cause (whether good or bad) is lost in his actions. I’m not saying that they don’t have good reasons or good causes, or bring important things to light — there are far better avenues and venues to get it done. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but becasue it is in print, it doesn’t make it any more valid or truthful. The Toronto star seems to be more focused on the slander stories this year.. I find that frustrating.

I think it’s crap that international fishermen can rob the grand banks. Sure something should be done, but taking my boat out to ram them!? Extremist. That’s like fighting for peace. It’s done, but does it make sense??

There are 2 sides to every story. Fact should not be opinion based. I just like to play devil’s advocate to people’s “knee jerk” reactions (thanks Gayder for the term!!)

As a youth, I worked at Marineland. I think that John Holer loves his animals more than the employees. First-hand experience has taught me a few things. People think the deers are starving and they only get fed the deer treats you buy. FALSE. The deers are fed a hay, foliage and berry diet, restocked twice daily. They are rotated out of the public viewing/interaction pens throughout the day. The treats they’re fed are just that – treats! Much like you’d give your dog a cookie, or a chocolate for yourself. I’ve heard people go on that the bears are SO hungry they’re killing and eating each other. FALSE. There was one incident in my memory of bears killing a weak, feeble, sickly bear that had been seen by a vet for failure to thrive. The bears did not eat this bear. The bears are given a carnivorous diet several times a day. They used to get marshmallow treats, but due to dental issues, it was changed to crunchy corn pops – their size and scratchiness clear up plaque which helps reduce decay.

If asked if I think that whales prefer oceans or tanks, of course I’d say oceans. However.. most, if not all of Marineland’s whales are born in captivity. This poses interesting problems should they be released to the wild – they don’t know how to hunt. There is a high probability they would starve, as they’re used to human interaction and feeding.

My whole family enjoys going. Gotta love that $5 funpass!! Where else would I take them to see and learn about dolphins, orcas and belugas? Not everyone has the opportunity to go to Nunavut to see the walruses & belugas in the wild, or the oceans to see the orcas, or the warm waters of our oceans to see the dolphins.. ALL where they have eye and skin issues, they are targets of illegal fishing and subject to toxins and oils spilled in the waters.. There is no perfect setting. I say kudos to Marineland for taking part in breeding programs and species saving. I knew one of the old Marineland veterinarians. He has since passed away, but he never had anything bad to say about the place. He loved the animals there, and loved caring for them. He too said Holer spares no expense when it comes to the animals.

I do believe that everyone should have their own right to an opinion. But, make sure your opinion is based on more than reading an article. Or what you 'thought' you saw at the park. There is always more to a story.
