Marie Osmond

Color me surprised that a celebrity had a failed marriage (or two). Wait, don't.

I am surprised when celebrities stay married.

Sometimes people get weird ideas about what it means to "belong" to a religious group. Just because you do something that goes against the theology of your church doesn't mean you aren't welcome there anymore.

I've never heard of a religion that doesn't consider marriage a lifetime commitment, but I know a lot of divorced people who are very religious. Most churches (?) recognize human failings as part of the package. The point isn't to BE God, it's to strive to live in a God pleasing fashion - something that is simply not 100% possible for humans. We all fall short of that at times, despite our best efforts.

30 yrs ago you would find few churches around here that were accepting of divorce. The church I attened growing up is no exception. funny thing was mom mom was allowed to attend because her divorces were before she returned to that church (it was actuallyher childhood church, I have g-g-p and g-g-g-p burried there). However a friend of hers was asked to not attend after she filed for divorce.
I think now churches have become more accepting of divorce, because they wouldn't have a congregation if they did not.

From what I know not all Mormon marriages are celestial..Only those that involved *sealing* in the temple..Not every Mormon is eligable for sealing in the temple in much the same way not all Catholics are eligable for communion at any given time

I am LDS (Mormon) and very active in my church.

You can be divorced and still be a member and still be considered a faithful member. Sometimes divorce needs to happen. It is discouraged if you can try to work things out, but you aren't outcast and you don't have to "buy your way" out of anything. My in laws are not famous and they are divorced and both still very much active in their faith.

You can get your temple sealing undone if you choose to remarry again in the temple or you can get married again for just until "death do you part."

I don't want to get in an argument with anyone about my religion, but I did want to clear up a few misconceptions.

Jen :)

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that a sealing could be undone.

It can, but it isn't the most pleasant or easy process. The Church hierarchy has to allow it.

And it isn't unusual, unfortunately.

I know it depends on the circumstances, but everyone I know that's divorced and remarried were able to have their sealing undone from the first marriage. They did have to have written permission from the previous spouse.

It has been a long time since I have discussed divorce with someone who is Mormon so forgive me if my information is a bit off.

I believe that the church will only recognize a (1) marriage in the church. If neither marriage was Mormon she is free and clear. If one marriage was in the Mormon church, the church will still consider that person to be her spouse in the after life. There are certain positions and certain levels she can not obtain in the church if she has not been married in the Mormon church. If married in the Mormon church, divorced but not married again I believe she still would have all the "rights"as someone married in the church.

IE...if her first marriage was not Mormon and the 2nd was, she will still retain any "rights" unless she marries again. If the 1st marriage was Mormon, the 2nd would not be, so she would not lose anything by divorcing the 2nd husband. anything lost would have happened by divorcing the 1st husband and/or marrying the 2nd.

The rules for women and men are different. A woman can be sealed to one man; a man can be sealed to multiple women. Also, the "positions" you mention above only being allowed if you've had a Celestial marriage are only for male Priesthood holders.

The "levels" in Heaven are also determined by whether you've had a Celestial marriage or not, regardless of gender.

Thanks... It's been a long time since I learned anything about LDS. I had a very good friend that was LDS and after a miscomunication (I was told by a mutual friend that I would offend her if I invited her children to my DS's birhtday party since it was on a Sunday) she explained a lot about their beliefs to me.

Interesting . . . thanks LadyShiva and jennilou!!

Funny how people who do not belong to a certain faith make so many assumptions about it.

Too bad for Marie. I know that divorce may not be prohibited anymore in the Mormon church, but I think it is generally not a good thing.

And she did have a pretty horrific case of post-partum depression a while back, from what I remember. Maybe that's why they decided to adopt children?

Of her 8 kids I believe 4 of them are adopted. You gotta feel bad for those kids though as this will be the second time that she has filed for divorce from this husband. (Who has a brain tumor and has had countless surgeries in the last 4 years because of the tumor)
Her Mother died and her Father is currently not in very good health.
I'm sure this divorce news is really helping matters. ;)
She just seems so selfish to me.

She devoted a year of her life to taking care of her dying mother that doesn't seem like the act of a selfish woman to me.

selfish? I just don't get how anyone could call her selfish

I have had a previous sealing canceled. I did not need the prior spouses permission per se. He wrote a letter explaining his version of why the marriage ended. I believe they are looking for any potential problems or previous sins that have not been repented of since I had to go in and address an unfounded accusation made by my ex-husband. If I had to wait for permission from my ex-husband, he never would have granted it. I left him because of abuse. This was his last attempt to control my life.

I have been happily married for the past several years to a good and kind man. But we aren't famous! There is a lot of stigma at being divorced and LDS. Marriages should be for eternity but at the most recent general conference of our church, they did address divorce.

Umm, her first son was less than 2 when she first divorced. I doubt he has any memory. Since she was #8 of 9 kids, her parents were older when she was born. She's now close to 50. She's very lucky to have had her Mom & Dad for so long.

I'm sure she takes Divorce very seriously. May she find peace.
