March Break Flights

Question about flights as they will open soon for Ontario March Break.

For March 2023, we are flying from Toronto to Miami for a cruise (Disney World is in the summer and flights already purchased).

I know that typically flights over March break only go up from when they are released so it's best to purchase right away. Dates open one at a time.

Wondering....do others purchase the two legs separately? i.e. purchase going there as soon as it's available and then purchase the return 7 days later (for eg) when it opens up? Or do you wait until both there and return are available and then purchase together? Not sure which is better.

We usually book our legs of our trip at different times. Sometimes on different carriers. We just try to find the best prices and find that works for us

I would book your MIA return flights as soon as you see a good flight time. The ones on Saturdays and Sundays that leave anywhere from 12:00pm to 2:00pm generally sell out quickest.

You can also look at flying into / from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) airport as it isn't very far from MIA.

Thanks. But do you suggest booking them together once the return opens up? Or is it better to purchase going there as soon as it opens, and then return 7 days later? I realize that this year may be very hard to predict with being after (during) covid and first break with no travel rules, etc.

Yeah...it would be Sat to Sun (we're flexible another day on either side if it makes a big price difference). Good point...FLL works too for Miami cruise.

@Frozen2014 I have done both. Airfare from Halifax to South Florida is generally around the same price most of time. I am typically more concerned with my return flights as I hate waiting around in the airport until 5pm (or later!)

Also, we always fly in the day prior to the cruise, so have more flexibility on flight times because of that.

Same...you never know with weather. And this past March break, there was a big storm for us and it impacted (cancelled) many flights to Florida...even in March.

Yeah, we often end up with evening flights on the way home as it can be a $500 difference. It makes for a long day (we've booked a hotel with a pool for a day a couple times)

I always book them as return flights. I will be using a companion voucher with Westjet and would have to use 2 of them if I booked both flights as one-way (and pay the companion fare fee twice). Other than that, I guess I never really thought about booking them separately although I do tend to book my flights as soon as possible as I too find that they just go up Up UP in price.

We have booked already on A/C. Outbound first. Then inbound. They have been available for a while. However, the outbound price (we use points) dropped about 3 days after booking but I was able to rebook at the lower point level.

Thanks. Didn't realize that AC already is selling for that date. Pricey as expected.
Glad you were able to modify your booking for the better price.

We book when we see a price drop. We don’t usually book them on the same day, Always book the flight down first. Never really in a rush to book coming home
