March 15, 2015 MAGIC Cruise!! :)

Ok...I'm so glad that I am not the only feeling the crunch! A mickey medal???...I am so in for the 5km. I will get to guest services to sign up.

I just wrote out a schedule between now and when we leave the 14th and its crazy here! Sooooo much packed in next week. I'm hoping to start packing sunday evening after work so I can figure out if there's anything we need I'm forgetting.

I'm planning on doing the 5K on castaway cay. Usually the 5Kers meet in one of the lounges that morning and go off together. There's no charge but they do limit it to 200 people and you have to be 10 and up to participate. It looks like you can sign up at guest services or port adventures anytime. I'm excited for it....and you get a mickey medal! !

One of the first things I'm going to do once onboard is head to Guest Services and register for the 5K (and pick up an extra wave phone for DD). Knowing I'm committed will keep me focused and hopefully prevent me from ordering every dessert at dinner. This time around I'll try to keep it to just two desserts per dinner. :teeth: :teeth:

@ForeverLosh - the feedback I've heard on the CC 5K is that it's a very flat course and that the combination of running on cement and the warm Caribbean weather makes for a hot run. Some have posted that you should expect to add a good 5 minutes to your normal 5K time because of the temperature (and impact from spending a week on a cruise). I don't have any personal experience with it. On last year's cruise I made the commitment to run it this year and will be following through with that. An injury sustained in the fall has prevented me from training fully, so I will be running and walking, but, considering that last year I would have had trouble walking the entire 5K, I'm taking it as a victory. I want that Mickey Medal!!

I don't run. Is it acceptable to walk the 5K? Or is it more of a competitive/running only 5K?

I don't think it's meant to be super competitive - everyone gets the same medal. I've heard of others who have walked the entire 5K. The other thing to keep in mind is that you can walk the course any time during the day if you don't care about the medal.

However, I've also heard that they only give out medals to those who complete the 5K within a set time - some have said 45 minutes, others have said an hour, yet others have said different times. I'm shooting for coming in under 45 minutes. I don't know if I'll make it, but I'm going to try.

The DCL website has very little info on the 5K, so I don't have many answers. Search the boards for info. With runDisney taking over the CC5K, I really don't know what to expect. I've got a bunch of questions for Guest Services when I register, hopefully they'll have some answers! Otherwise, I'll find out the morning of the run.

I'm certainly not competitive, but will try to remember to sign up with guest services. I'm also used to running in the "hot" weather, so that shouldn't bother me as much, especially with a 5K. I run/walk intervals 3/1's. Better for my troublesome IT band. Looking forward to it!

Meredith,
We are from St. Augustine FL. What about you?
My brother did the Americas Cup Regatta in St. Maarten and loved it but did not have kids. We are doing the Trolley in Key West then walking around. We signed up for the Jeep Exploration in Cozumel.
We have my mom with us and she gets around great but not sure of her adventure level.
Becky

Meredith,
Did you book trolley through cruise or are you getting off and doing it yourself?

Congrats on post #10! You should now be able to send and receive PMs!

I was used to running in the summer Texas heat, 105 degrees wasn't a big deal, but after this winter, I'm not going to be used to any hot weather. A warm temperature will definitely slow me down a bit.

One good rumor I've heard is that they've moved the start of the run back to early morning. My understanding is that they used to start early, like 8:30am, then moved it to 10:30, which is when people really started complaining about the heat. However, I've heard the start is back at 8:30. I don't have a confirmation of that - it's one of my questions for Guest Services next Sunday.

Woohoo! We are into single digits for the number of days until the cruise! We actually had a bit of snow this morning, which was totally unexpected. I just thought we were getting some freezing rain last night.

BTW, here's a recent CC 5k report: https://littlemoreeachday.wordpress.com/2015/02/10/castaway-cay-5k-2015/ I love the medal too! :-)

Great find on that link! Everything I had seen was at least a year old. It includes some excellent tips, I'll definitely be getting a t-shirt pre-run. I can't wait! Laying off the bad food and remembering to follow my running schedule will be easier now that I've read that summary.

Thanks kjp that was great! This will be my first 5K and I'm really excited. I'm not usually a runner but have been adding running into my workouts the last two months. I will totally admit though I'm doing it for the mickey medal!!! ;)

Yay! Sounds like there will be a few of us trying to earn that Mickey medal. I definitely prefer to run early if possible. Thanks Nike4000 for helping me get my 10 posts in.

Congrats on hitting your 10 posts! I'm happy to help. Yeah, the medal is the main incentive for me. Whenever I think about walking during my workout, I think about that medal and it pushes me a little further. It's the simple things that keep us motivated. :yay:

For the trolly in Key West, I have read a couple different things. If we book through the ship, it's once around and done. If we go in and book ourselves, the kids are free and we would have on/off privileges. I couldn't find any information about how far the walk would be from the port. Does anyone know?

If anyone wants some light reading here are the PN's for a recent Magic sailing...

(Sorry if someone already posted this link)

Thank you for that! I know it's weird, but seeing the Navigators that are from our itinerary, and so close to sailing date, just makes me happy! We love Captain John, too! I so looked forward to his announcements at noon. (Meanwhile, I do have the DCL chime on my phone to notify me of texts, so I just imagine my own announcements, LOL!)

We have seen Dale K and Freddy Fusion, and they are both very entertaining.

Getting excited (and trying to hit 10 posts).. Any tips for improving my chances of an upgrade? Arrive early, arrive late? Can I check in alone, or do I need my whole family there?

Getting to the port early will help your chances. I believe the policy is everyone needs to be there to check-in, but i've also heard of people who are allowed to check-in their whole family by showing their PP's and such. Although they take photo's of everyone when you check-in, so i'm not entirely sure how the latter option would work.
