I finally got my book, Marathoning for Mortals from Amazon. The training program looks great but I'm going to get my endurance up a little before attempting the running or run/walk program.

What does everybody do for crosstraining? Right now I do strengthtraining (les mills bodypump at the gym) and pilates (gym and DVD at home). Hopefully, I'll get to swim this summer, although I'm not very good at it.

Does anyone have any additional suggestions?

Those sound great!! I do Curves, but I must admit that my XT is my weakest link.

I also do Les Mills Body Pump at the gym. LOVE IT!!

Sometimes I would do the Body Step that they offer, but after all of the long runs I really built up such endurance that was not challenging enough anymore.

Spinning classes are another great way to cross train. When my calf was injured that is what the trainer at the gym had me do.

I do the elliptical and sometimes the stationary bike. I also do strength training which is so important in preventing injuries (yeah, I've learned that the hard way).

Just picked it up a week or two ago, although the initial costs of cycling as a hobby/crosstrain strategy are steep (bike/shorts/helmet/pump/spare tubes/tires etc etc etc), it sure does make me feel fast riding under 4 minute miles. :rotfl:

Also planning to give a triathlon or two a shot this summer assuming I'm in the area, we'll see how that goes... Although I still stink at swimming. :)

Carrie-How do you like Curves? Is it still challenging for you even though you've done all this endurance training? We have one that just opened up the street.

I also do the stationary bike & swimming when I can. I need to get more serious about my xt (well all my training at this point;) )

Nice ride Matt! (and I love that song too ) I keep saying I'm going to do a triathlon but havent gotten around to enough training in the pool yet.

I do the elliptical at the gym, outdoor biking when we aren't having winter, and a little swimming. I also do some strength training with weights, but I know I should do more. I also want to do more swimming.

I do Curves for my cross training. I get a good work out from it. I have been a member for two years and I really enjoy it. I just ran my first half marathon two weeks ago and my net time was 1:59.32. So I would say it works for me with the cross training. So far so good no injuries.:thumbsup2
I have only been running for a year and a half. I too just purchased the book Marathoning for Mortals. It is full of wonderful information. I am glad I got it.

In my better cross training mode, I like to do Pilates (Winsor DVD), pool swimming or water jogging (swogging ;) ) and machine weights. I did not devote as much time to this last training season and I regret it. My good intentions are to get back on that plan. Have yet to get there however.

right now i'm focusing on strength training too, but i'm trying to lose weight. when i'm maintaining i like pilates and yoga. I have a couple DVDs that i use if i can't get to the fitness center -- does make me feel good to see others doing the same type XT :)

Matt--nice ride! I see you got a tri bike. How do you like it? I currently have a road bike (Specialized Allez Comp), but have been toying around with the idea of getting a tri bike. I've ridden a few and really like the geometry of the tri better. I've thought about installing aero bars on my road bike, but I've heard that can actually be counterproductive as it can cause stress on your back due to the fact that a road bike is really not set up for the stretched out rider postion of a tri bike. So I just thought I'd see what you thought.

Did my first spinning course this week. WOW! That really puts the burn on the quads doesn't it. I think it can really make a difference in the long run. It's the first time I've left a class literally dripping with sweat.
