Marathon Weekend 2027

In high school I had a Beauty and the Beast themed livejournal and a Lion King themed secret livejournal. So this is rude. I’m picking Lion King simply bc as I have aged the Beast just makes me mad.

Lion King
Up
Pirates
Abstain

Regarding the hotel conversation, I actually enjoy staying at Sports especially during MW. It makes me feel like an athlete. You can walk to McDonald’s for a coke lol. But there definitely isn’t as much to do there.

If budget wasn’t a consideration I would choose POFQ for the beignets and Springs access.

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week’s edition of Sundays Are For Disney (SAFD) where we’ll be continuing our March Movie Madness event! The first round seemed to push many of you to the brink of madness and I don’t anticipate things getting any easier from here. So, for our first order of business, here are the first round results, which, for all the complaining about difficulty, weren’t all that close:

Lion King trampled the Little Mermaid 31-11
Beauty and the Beast withstood Encanto’s storming of the castle 28-14
Toy Story monologued the Incredibles 32-10
Up floated past Coco 28-13

Pirates of the Caribbean gave Enchanted a full broadsides 36-5
Mary Poppins knocked Roger Rabbit right out of the frame 28-11
Guardians of the Galaxy squeaked past Raiders of the Lost Ark 21-20 in the only real close match up
Empire Strikes Back struck down Rogue One 33-6

Here are your next round match ups. Take your best shot!

Does anyone know of any charities that have Dopey (preferably) or Goofy bibs available? Trying to help a friend that wasn’t able to register. Thanks.

I don’t know of any. From the Team runDis page, many are sold out, but there are several that are not confirmed - and the charities would need to be contacted.

Maybe you’ve already looked at this page and are hoping for someone that specifically knows. Hopefully someone reaches out!

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week’s edition of Sundays Are For Disney (SAFD) where we’ll be continuing our March Movie Madness event! The second round didn’t seem to be much easier for folks, but the results still weren’t all that close, with one exception. So, for our first order of business, here are the second round results:

  • Lion King took one step closer to completing the circle of life, devouring Beauty & the Beast 25-15
  • Toy Story popped Up’s balloon 25-14
  • Our favorite English nanny proved to be no match for Captain Jack’s Pirates of the Caribbean, although she kept it close right up until the end, falling 19-21
  • Finally, Star Destroyers proved more powerful than a Star Lord, as Empire Strikes Back took down the Guardians of the Galaxy 22-16

Here are your next round match ups. May the best movies win!

SAFD: In an ideal world, I’d be looking at a matchup of Encanto vs. Coco on one side and Mary Poppins vs. Raiders of the Lost Ark on the other. Alas, things have not gone my way.

Upon reflection, I don’t have an issue with Lion King vs Toy Story. They fit much more neatly into a bracket of most overrated Disney and Pixar films from my perspective, but they’re logical enough choices. I won’t be voting for either, I will leave that for those who feel more strongly about them.

The other two brackets have just been a little nebulous from the start. I think in live action Disney, even though it’s not my cup of tea, that Mary Poppins was somewhat of an obvious choice. This was an incredibly narrow category the way things were interpreted. Disney has produced a ton of live action movies but almost all of them under the umbrella of different companies, leading them to be basically dismissed offhand for the purposes of this endeavor. I’ll grant that Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is likely the best of what they’ve done recently (and miles better than any of the “live-action remakes” they have been trotting out).

My heart still lies with Raiders of the Lost Ark though. It is my favorite movie of all-time full stop, but I also think it holds a unique place in the non-Disney that became Disney IP world as the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular is entirely built upon the set pieces of Raiders. I will say this, as a kid born in 1982 (which is much longer ago than it feels like it should be), there has never been a moment that I didn’t think of Raiders (and all of Indiana Jones) as Disney. It seems like the discussion over the validity of this bracket and certain entries within it has skewed results. All that said, the bracket exists and Empire Strikes Back is the best movie left (in my opinion, by a significant margin). Given the parameters as defined, I will cast a vote for Empire Strikes Back over Pirates of the Caribbean.

ETA: I present the previous as insights from a fellow, reasonable poster; but understand that they may be interpreted by some as the ramblings of a sore loser.

Now that all of my top choices are out this may be the easiest vote yet for me.

Lion King over Toy Story
POTC over Empire - I feel compelled to do a short recap of my justification from last week. Empire is absolutely the better movie and I would vote for it over POTC in almost any head to head - except this one. I am reserving my votes for movies that were made under the Disney umbrella - not prior to IP acquisition. My apologies to my fellow Empire Fans (You should have voted for Rogue One 😂 )

SAFD: aw heck - it’s hard again…

Lion King - only because I want to give props to traditional hand-drawn animation. Both hit me right in the feels equally, and if I’m very honest, I prefer the characters in Toy Story.

POTC - WUT?!?! I know, I know. But here’s the thing: POTC was the OG of its franchise. We wouldn’t have had a POTC 2 or 3 (both superior movies IMO) without it. We wouldn’t have had the updates to the ride! Empire is one of my favorite SW movies… but it’s not the OG of its franchise.

There are a handful of movies I consider to be "perfect." They're not my favorite movies, necessarily; and they're not the best movies, but I can't think of a better word to describe them. Movies that absolutely nailed the plot, the cast, the music, everything.

Oceans Eleven is a perfect movie. Remember the Titans is a perfect movie. I cannot point to a single aspect and say, "This could be better."

I also consider the Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean to be perfect movies. Disney absolutely knocked it out of the park with both.

Incidentally, I think Empire Strikes Back is a better movie than Pirates (not Lion King, but that's not the matchup). But I'm picking Pirates for the aforementioned perfect vibe and because Empire is a retroactive Disney movie, not an OG one.

So, Lion King and Pirates are my picks.
