Marathon Weekend 2026

Looking for some info from those of you who stop for pics during races.

With my DNF in my October marathon, I’m modifying my plan to PR in fun for the Disney marathon. So I now have a time goal in mind WITH some picture stops. I’m trying to plan out how many pics I can stop for and make that goal. So do any of you have an idea of the average time you spend at each stop?
Agree with @PrincessV.

It can also depend on which corral you start in. If you're in an earlier corral, the lines tend to be shorter) and how far along you are. I find the later miles the lines tend to be much shorter. Last year I started in C and from the Star Wars area heading in to AK all the way to the end I don't recall ever having to wait more than a minute or two. I waited longer to get a beer in Epcot!

I tend to skip the early stops with the crazy lines UNLESS it's a character I really want to see. "Banking" some time for later stops or riding attractions.

It varies SO much! I’m talking everything from walking right up with no one in front of me, to a 45+ min wait. I don’t think there’s any way to plot that out. You really have to assess the situation in the moment and make a choice. Some like to decide ahead of time what characters are worth their time, some make a pre-race call to only stop if the wait is less than a certain amount of time. You could decide ahead of time what total amount of time you’re willing to spend on stops and ration that out as you go - but that’s going to involve a fair amount of mathing.
45 minutes?? See this is why I had to ask. Ooooffffff! Runner math certainly gets harder the later it gets 😂

I should be in C with my POT. Sounds like the best plan is to worry about time in the first half and then character stops during the second half. I’d hate to miss my time goal if I spent too much time in lines the first half. I feel confident in my plan, my time goal is slower than I’m training for to allow for some fun, just how much fun is TBD!

I started in B, and spent about 30 minutes total in photo lines to get 14 pics (including a castle pic) and I am NOT fast

Lines at the beginning of the race (pre-MK) tend to be longer than the lines post-MK. I tend to be extremely selective with my stops early on because I’m trying to get to the highway miles where it opens up and really find a groove with my intervals. Villains tend to have longer lines, as do uncommon characters (Tarzan, Hercules/Meg, etc)

IME by the time I hit HS there no lines, or they’re 3 people long which is still almost no line.

SAFD: I didn’t really know there were races at Disney until 2012, when DH came home from work and told me that a couple of his coworkers were going to Princess 2013. We loved going to Disney any chance we got, but a half marathon seemed way out of my league. I didn’t run until well into adulthood, and mostly I did it as a solo thing at the local park, where I could go my own (slow) speed.

He asked me if I was interested in signing up for the Princess 2013 half. I was, but didn’t think I could do it, so I said no. A couple of weeks later, he brought it up again (this was way before the days of instant sellouts), and I decided to register. I had eight months to train, and when I learned about run/walk/run, I felt better. I even emailed with Jeff Galloway a few times, and he was very helpful and encouraging. I ran my first 10k to get a PoT, and trained diligently.

I did the race, and got the beautiful medal, and was amazed that I had completed it. As part of talking me into it and encouraging me, DH did a similar training cycle, even though he wasn't going to run the race. Well, there was no reason to let all that training go to waste, right? A few months later, we both did a local half, then another half in Atlanta, then I registered for the first challenge (the inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge at Princess 2014). That’s the medal in my avatar.

For the next few years, we set different goals for ourselves. One year, we did at least a half a month. There was one eight day stretch where we did three halfs. We started collecting states, with the rule being that it had to be at least a ten-miler to count. I got to 17. By 2016, we had registered for our first full, at MW, of course. In 2019, we did a local race series, where I had some success that I never expected.

In all, I’ve done 50 half marathons, six fulls (Disney in 2016, 2019, and 2020; Atlanta in 2017; Chicago in 2017; and Marine Corps in 2018). I’ve also done two ultras (24 hours races, where I went at least 50k). I can’t begin to count the 5ks and 10ks. No one could be more surprised about all this than me.

These days, it’s much more of a struggle. MW2020 (the one that was super hot), it turns out that I was running with the flu, then got covid. That did something weird to my heart rate. Then, there was 2022, which was a nightmare year for me, medically speaking. I won’t go into the details here, but it was very, very, very bad.

I’m definitely retired from the marathon distance, but I’m currently registered for the half for MW and the half for PW. I’ve completed a few halfs since 2022 (because I really wanted to get to the 50 number), but this time, I’m trying to see if I can finish stronger and better. It’s frustrating, as I know I’ll never be where I was before, but it’s pretty amazing that running is even something I can still do after what I went through, so I’m going to appreciate it while I can.

I know this is incredibly long, but TL;DR—let’s go have fun at Disney!!!

Also, how do we feel about multiple half marathons being halfs vs. halves? I think technically it’s halves, but it just looks so wrong in this context. Is anyone else bothered by this, or is it just me?

If you push through the first half without stops and then start hitting all the stops they are generally short lines and very little wait time. Seems like the first 5-6 stops are very lengthy

Waiting until after MK/halfway sounds good. Hopefully no one I’m dying for a pic with is before then 😝 This is very foreign to me, I didn’t stop for any pics last 2 marathons! Thanks for the input!

The longest character waits tend to be for the big names and race themes: Mickey/Minnie are almost always long waits, as is Dopey. Goofy and Donald/Daisy can get long sometimes. But it’s pretty easy to see: if the line stretches 1/4mile, you know it’ll be a while lol! But there are plenty of other stops where you might only have 5-10 parties waiting - that’s a matter of a few minutes, tops. There’s limited character interaction during races: people jump in, snap a pic, and go.

Looking at the list from 2025 and my pics, it looks like I stopped for 4 characters before MK, and 1 character and the castle in MK. Sometimes it's good to just take a couple minutes in a photo line as a breather if you've got the time.

I usually run out of the middle of B corral, and run around an 11 to 11.5 minute mile moving pace. With stops, I think my pace is closer to 13.5-14 minutes for the marathon. I usually skip the first couple stops if they're really long or not unique and start stopping for almost all characters by mile 4-5 since it's usually cleared up by then. I'll only skip it if the line looks 5+ minutes long and it's not a character I'm really interested in. I'll stop for literally anything if it's a short line! After MK there are hardly any lines for me. I looked back and it seems like I get around 20 photos during the marathon. My fastest WDW marathons have been around 6:13 and one year that included Everest and Tower of Terror!

C starts only a couple minutes behind B, so if you run around my pace, you can honestly stop for almost everything. I could stop for those first few characters and be fine, I just usually like to get a little ahead of the crowds.

Edit: I checked, and my elapsed time is about an hour longer than my moving time for my WDW marathons. So with 20 stops...maybe an average of 2-3 minutes per stop for me! I don't think I've ever waited more than like 7 minutes during the marathon for anything.

Oh I stopped for Elvis Stitch a couple of years ago. My fave. Cost me about 10 min but at the time amazing. Got a new phone and lost the pic even though it was supposed to be backed up. 😭

@RuntheMouse I started in E during the last marathon. According to my moving vs elapsed time, I was stopped for 30 minutes total. I had four character stops, two photo ops, and 3 bathroom stops, plus meeting my family. Not to mention various selfies that only took a few seconds.

- Gaston
- Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
- castle
- MK bathroom (my longest stop because I took off my leggings)
- Phasma
- Vi
- AK bathroom
- Everest photo op
- meeting family in AK
- Blizzard Beach porta potty

I had enough time banked where I could have stopped for other characters in the second half of the race, but nobody really appealed to me and by that time I was ready to be done. The lines were definitely short enough to have stopped, too.

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). Camaker deputized me to assume the mantle for SAFD this week, Happy 20th Anniversary Camaker! We are less than 50 days away from Marathon Weekend. Our question for this week involves our favorite meals before a race or long run. As we all know, “nothing new for race day.” Do you struggle to find your well-practiced pre-run dinner while at Disney? Or do you try to recreate the same meals at home that you will find at Disney? Is carb loading a thing for you?

SAFD: I never used to think much about pre-race dinners while at Disney, mostly I would focus on eating early enough to have an early night for those extremely early morning wake ups.

A couple of weeks ago, I felt like my runs were more of a struggle and I was losing the joy in running. I began to doubt my ability to make it through another race weekend. Then it was my birthday, and, for some reason, I decided I wanted to go to Olive Garden. It had probably been ten years since I had been there. To my surprise, they still had the Tour of Italy on the menu, which I ordered it (1,550 calories!) even though I was pretty sure that a giant meal would make my long run the next morning even more of a struggle than it had been.

To my enormous surprise, it was the best run I’ve had in months. Since that happened a few weeks ago, I have been focused on fueling more the night before my runs and lo’ and behold, my runs are turning fun again. I was never a “light” eater, but I had not realized how much I was failing to keep properly fueled for the efforts I was making.

In advance of the half and full marathon days, I am going to make sure I eat the most carb loaded, cheesy dinner I can find, even if it's not a Tour of Italy. Fortunately, this will not be too difficult at Disney.

Chicken parm, or some version of it the afternoon before every marathon. Usually mama Melrose so this year that option is gone. Trying Il Mulino at the Swan. I eat more calories and carbs than most can imagine every day so pre race would scare most people away. More importantly, at least for me, the 24 hours before I have absolutely zero food such as salad or high fiber snacks, no need for anything aiding digestion come race day.
