SAFD: I put my gloves for the first time today! It was 40 when I set out with a cold wind, and I did my warm up mile with gloves, long sleeve top and a down jacket!! Managed to take off the coat after a mile but there’s no way I’d be in short or vest in this weather… very stingy!

What’s the usual temp for MW?

It also depends on how long you’ll be on the course! It could be 50 when you start and 80 when you finish.

Most people drop them in the corrals or along the course when they need to come off. If it's something small like arm sleeves or gloves, I'll usually stuff them in a pocket, otherwise it's a discard.

I carried my leggings that I didn’t want to ditch. I tied them around my waist and gave them to my husband in AK. The balaclava was a throwaway but I managed to tie in around my handheld before passing it off. Gloves were throwaways so I tossed them in an AK bathroom. Generally people discard clothes anywhere around the course, but it’s recommended to do so near a water station or medical tent so they’re easier to collect.

I think it hit 80 degrees in both 2020 and 2022.

SAFD: I run really hot and sweat a ton. If it’s over 50 I’m in a short sleeves/tank and shorts. In the 40’s it’s either short sleeves and tights or long sleeves and shorts. In the 30’s tights and long sleeves. Below freezing, I bust out the thermal tights and a 1/4 zip layer. Gloves are always on below 40.

SAFD: after the fact..I agree with what someone posted a few years ago. If you are not cold for the first mile or two then you wore too much. If you are still cold after three miles then you did not wear enough.

I buy cheap gloves during Black Friday. Target and old navy usually have them for a few dollars. I’ve gone to goodwill for sweats or I’ll wear an old one that’s good to donate

I have two different kinds of clothes to deal with the weather.

The first are throwaway clothes. These are ones brought for the sole purpose of leaving them behind. I don't worry too much about what they look like or how they fit. For the most part, they get taken off before I cross the start line although I did run the first two miles of the marathon last year with a blanket. I get these at Goodwill or I've found some great deals on clearance at Kohls.

The second are things that I want to keep. My raincoat, hat and arm sleeves fit in this category. If I need to take them off, they get tied around my waist or put in a pocket. At Disney, if I have a support crew, I might give them to her when we meet up.

There is a third category of things that I don't necessarily want to throw away, but might consider it. I have some light running jackets and my cheap gloves that fit in to this category. I don't want to keep replacing them and kind of like them, but I'm not incredibly attached to them.

Yes and no. For the most part, I've run in enough different weather at home that I know what works and what doesn't. This is an often unacknowledged part of the training for these races - getting your equipment ready for everything that might be thrown at you.

SAFD - I run hot so my threshold for doing anything besides shorts and a t-shirt is somewhere around 45 degrees. I might add a pair of stretchy gloves, but those would probably come off fairly quickly. Then I'll add either arm sleeves or a thin running jacket, capris, and maybe a hat until somewhere around freezing. If I need full length tights, I'm probably moving the run inside and I usually don't enter races where the temps are likely to be below freezing.
